SUMMARY:Square Foot Gardening Class
DESCRIPTION:As in New York State\, a Pennsylvania State Master Gardener is a trained volunteer who shares gardening knowledge with the public through community outreach. \nWhen Jamestown resident David Winner was training to become a Penn State Master Gardener\, he was required to participate in a minimum of 40 hours in the classroom\, score 80 percent on the midterm and final exam\, and fulfill 50 hours of volunteer service. \nWinner still loves to garden and has become especially interested in encouraging new gardeners and those who don’t think they have enough space. \nSaturday\, April 18\, 1–3 p.m.\, Winner is offering a class in “Square Foot Gardening\,” an intensive\, high-yield gardening method that maximizes space\, reduces weeding\, and uses less water compared to traditional row gardening. It is ideal for small spaces\, beginners\, and optimizing produce per square foot. \nThe presentation will be at the Unitarian church\, 1255 Prendergast Avenue\, Jamestown\, where parking is behind the building. With a $10 fee\, it will include visuals to demonstrate how to set up a square foot garden and refreshments. \n“I really want folks to reap the benefits of growing their own fresh vegetables in a small space\,” says Winner\, who has worked countless hours as a master gardener teaching square foot gardening. \nNow retired from seven years of participating with his wife in the Jamestown Farmers Market\, he said\, “We sold Barbara’s special teas for five of those years. We were also known for our homegrown garlic and humorous homemade garden signs\, like ‘Trespassers will be composted.’” \nBarbara will also be part of the class\, showing the importance of weeds that grow in our yards. \nAnyone is welcome. Preregistration is not required. For more information\, call (716) 665-4605. \nProceeds from the class will benefit the church.

SUMMARY:Chautauqua Progressive Action (PAL) February Meetup
DESCRIPTION:It’s been a long winter\, friends\, but it’s time to come out of hibernation and get in the game. 2026 is here. \nWe have places to go and things to do. Candidates to elect. Republicans to evict and replace with people who work for us! \nWe have to become better organized\, better prepared to protect those who are bearing the brunt of the terror from this nightmare regime\, and we must apply more pressure for consequences against those who abuse the public trust and We the People. \nPeople are waking up to the reality of what has been going on. The scandals are blowing up. The resistance is rising. There are opportunities for everyone to do their part\, large or small. \nThe future belongs to us if we refuse to fold. Let’s do this. \nSee you soon. Feel free to bring concerned friends!

SUMMARY:Author David Cay Johnston: How to Save Our Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for this free event at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Jamestown! Donations happily accepted. \n\nJ ohnston is widely recognized for his extensive and long-running research on Donald Trump\, a subject he has covered since before the 2016 election. His upcoming presentation will offer his assessment of the current threats to American society posed by the Trump presidency\, along with his prescriptions for resistance and the protection of democratic principles.\nOften referring to himself as “Donald Trump’s most hated journalist\,” Johnston has followed Trump’s career closely since 1988\, when he first wrote about Trump potentially becoming president. This is a unique opportunity to hear Johnston’s insights on what actions are necessary to safeguard democracy from the individual he characterizes as a “dictator.”\nJohnston’s investigative work has uncovered numerous facets of Trump’s past\, including his dealings with a business partner who confessed to being a major cocaine trafficker\, the presence of underage gamblers in Trump casinos\, the illegal hiring of undocumented aliens\, lucrative business associations with Russian mobsters\, and a documented ignorance of basic historical facts\, such as the events at Pearl Harbor on December 7\, 1941.\n\nA best-selling author\, Johnston has penned eight books\, three of which focus on Donald Trump: The Making of Donald Trump (2016 biography)\, It’s Even Worse Than You Think (2018\, assessing Trump’s efforts to dismantle civil rights and environmental laws)\, and The Big Cheat (documenting how Trump enriched himself and his family during his first term). Johnston currently serves as a professor at Rochester Institute of Technology\, where he teaches courses in law and journalism.
