SUMMARY:A Celebration of Stories and Science from The Spark Bird Podcast
DESCRIPTION:Join RTPI and BWD Magazine (Bird Watcher’s Digest) to learn more about The Spark Bird Project from founder Jenn Lodi-Smith\, Ph.D.\, the ongoing community science initiative gathering\, sharing\, and studying the stories of people’s passion for birds! Connect with fellow bird enthusiasts to learn more about the project\, enjoy spark bird stories\, and get an update on what we are discovering from over 400 spark birders and growing. \nJenn Lodi-Smith will be joining us via Zoom on May 1\, from 1:00 – 2:00 pm. (a 40-minute presentation followed by 10 minutes for questions/comments). Seating and a viewing screen will be set up in the Green Gallery\, and the public may speak with Jenn in real time during the presentation. Viewers may also engage with the Zoom at home. Light refreshments will be available in the RTPI lobby. \nWhat is the Spark Bird Project? \nThe Spark Bird Project is an ongoing participatory community social science initiative designed to gather\, share\, and study the stories of people’s passion for birds while gaining scientific insights into a critical piece in the ecology of birds: birders themselves. The Spark Bird Project leverages the tools of social science to study spark bird stories\, with research findings going directly back to community partners to inform their efforts towards engaging people in birding. The knowledge gained from The Spark Bird Project helps to craft inclusive experiences that can facilitate spark bird moments for the benefit of the birding community\, the new birder\, the economy\, and – most importantly – the birds and our world! By understanding what hooks and sustains birders\, The Spark Bird Project helps grow the constituency of individuals creatively working to conserve and protect our planet. The Spark Bird Project also helps birders better understand each other by sharing spark bird stories publicly at https://www.spark-bird.org/stories and through The Spark Bird Podcast.

SUMMARY:Jennifer Anderson In-Person Gallery Talk and Drypoint Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, April 25th\, for an in-person gallery talk and drypoint demonstration by 2025 Artist-in-Residence Jennifer Anderson! Last year\, Anderson spent a week at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute and focused on bird portraiture as a way of seeing – and honoring – the California Condor and the American Kestrel. The portraits ask the viewer to linger: to meet a gaze\, to sense personality\, and to acknowledge the dignity of a living being. \nAnderson will speak on her residency and artworks\, as well as give a live demonstration on how she created her drypoint etchings. Guests will be able to ask questions during the gallery talk and hear about the artwork directly from the artist herself. \nEvent is FREE to members – regular admission for non-members. \nFeatured artwork: Jennifer Anderson. Stay and Tell Your Story. Drypoint with chine collé\, 2025.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening - Art that Matters to the Planet: Beyond Beauty
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the opening of our first major exhibition of 2026\, Art that Matters to the Planet: Beyond Beauty. \nArt that Matters to the Planet explores the ways in which art and artists matter – by drawing us into a deeper relationship with nature\, opening hearts and minds to the critical challenges of our time\, and inspiring us to the solutions we need to address those challenges. \nEach year\, the theme for this exhibition draws inspiration from the work of Roger Tory Peterson\, typically his series of field guides. Our 2026 theme\, inspired by A Field Guide to Wildflowers\, is titled Art that Matters to the Planet: Beyond Beauty. This exhibition focuses on flowering plants across the country and what they can teach us through the dual lenses of science and art. More than just a pretty face (Stamen? Pistil? Calyx?)\, flowers play vital roles ecologically\, biologically\, culturally\, and spiritually. \nGuest juror Heeyoung Kim will be in attendance. Kim is a wildflower painter who contributes to public awareness about native plants and nature conservation. She is also the first living artist to be represented by the renowned natural history art gallery\, Joel Oppenheimer Gallery\, in downtown Chicago. \nYour ticket includes full access to the museum\, charcuterie\, and live music by Jade Giambrone. The RTPI bar offers a selection of wine\, beer\, cider\, and non-alcoholic beverages for purchase. \nCredit: Heeyoung Kim. Common Milkweed and Monarch (Bloom). Watercolor\, 2025. SUMMARY:Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Survey - RTPI and JCC
DESCRIPTION:You Can Help Save Native Trees! \n\nEvery winter\, we conduct Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) surveys across the region. You can help survey hemlock trees at the Cassadaga Lakes Nature Park preserve on February 21\, or Roger Tory Peterson Institute and SUNY JCC on March 7 for the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid.\nTo volunteer\, please visit chautauquawatershed.org/events and RSVP for either survey.\nHWA is most visible in winter. In the coldest months\, the aphids go dormant and form cotton-like protective balls at the bases of hemlock needles\, making it easy to observe and diagnose. This dormant period also makes it much less likely for surveyors to accidentally spread HWA from tree to tree by physically touching multiple hemlocks in an area during a survey.\n\nBy surveying local hemlock trees and reporting any HWA we observe on them\, we can help with the implementation of targeted treatment plans to manage the infestations and prevent further spread.
