SUMMARY:Catherine D'Agostino "A Workshop for Writers"
DESCRIPTION:A Workshop for Writers- I want to write a book. Now what? \nCatherine D’Agostino will be on hand at the Patterson Library on Tuesday\, March 31 from 3-4\, to offer insight to writers – aspiring and established – on ways to develop a book idea into a plan. Just as painting a room requires preparation before beginning\, so does writing a manuscript. She will specifically discuss the options available when choosing an audience\, genre\, and point of view\, along with organizational methods to help keep writers on track. The presentation will end with a Q&A. D’Agostino won’t evaluate book pitches\, recommend publishers\, or discuss formatting documents; her focus will be on the writing process. \nCall us at 716-326-2154 to reserve your spot in this workshop!

SUMMARY:Lark Milius - Once Upon a Papercut
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Artist Statement \nFairy tales have long resonated with me and remain a lasting passion. They have shaped who I am\, and in turn\, I use my craft to reimagine and render them through scissors and paper. Fairy tales contain straightforward narratives of good and bad that children can understand\, yet also have a rich complexity that engages adult contemplations. \nMy artistic process begins digitally\, where I design each piece by exploring key narrative moments or emotions within a tale. Once the composition is finalized\, I project the drawing onto a wall and trace it. I then carefully select from my collection of papers\, choosing those best suited to the piece. Each shape is meticulously cut and layered to create depth and dimension. At first glance\, the compositions may appear simple\, but closer inspection reveals intricate details within the layers\, much like the stories that inspired them. \nI am particularly drawn to stories of transformation and change\, grief and perseverance\, caution and courage. Through this work\, I aim to capture the timeless nature of these tales\, inviting viewers to experience a sense of enchantment and wonder as they explore the simple complexity of Once Upon a Paper-Cut. \n\nShort Bio \nLark has had a life long passion for art\, fairy tales\, and libraries. She is ecstatic that her first gallery show Once Upon a Paper-cut will be held in the Patterson Library Octagon Gallery March 27\, 2026 – April 23\, 2026. \nLark got her Bachelors degree in Art with an emphasis in Illustration at Brigham Young University-Idaho (2021). \nLark works full-time at a public library in North Carolina as a Youth Services Associate. She is currently pursuing a Masters in Library and Information Sciences at University of North Carolina-Greensboro.

SUMMARY:Nancy Wehr - Glimpses of Iceland in Art in the Stacks
DESCRIPTION:Nancy Wehr is a creation photographer. “My lifelong fascination with science and my awe of the beauty of God’s creation around me have influenced and inspired my subject selection. Just peering out of my windows and seeing birds\, sunrise and sunset colors\, and various cloud formations causes me to smile and to thank God for the beauty He created. My photography journey began with a 110 film camera. In high school\, I took a darkroom photography course and I upgraded to a 35mm film camera. The cost of developing film put my photography dream on the back burner during college. Family vacations provided an opportunity to bring out the camera. When my home-schooled daughter wanted to do a photography course in high school\, I picked up my camera again with greater purpose—I now needed to teach someone and the passion for photography was reignited. I began sending photos of our gorgeous sunsets to some family members because I desired to share God’s artwork that I had the privilege to witness and also to capture with my camera. I feel blessed to have experienced and captured awe-inspiring scenes and colors. For me\, witnessing the wonders in creation is a worship experience that leads to thanking God for His awesome creation and gorgeous color palette. “ \nThis two month show in Art in the Stacks is on view from February 27-April 24\,2026.

SUMMARY:Elizabeth Booth - Close to Home
DESCRIPTION:Close to Home’ exhibit opens February 20 at Octagon Gallery \n“Close to Home\,” an exhibition showcasing contemporary botanical cyanotype works on paper and textiles by Elizabeth Booth\, opens with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday\, February 20\, at the Patterson Library Octagon Gallery in Westfield. \nThe exhibition runs through March 20. The gallery\, which is open during regular library hours\, is located at 40 South Portage St. in Westfield\, NY. See www.pattersonlib.org for more information. \n“Close to Home” is a collection of cyanotypes created using plants gathered from the woods\, fields\, and gardens surrounding the artist’s home in Arkwright\, NY. \nCyanotype\, a photographic process dating to the mid-1800s\, is known for its distinctive Prussian blue tones. In this exhibition\, Booth reinterprets this historic process through a modern lens\, creating works that bridge alternative photography\, painting\, and textile art. The results range from delicate botanical impressions on paper to larger scale works on fabric. \nThe exhibition highlights the versatility of the process\, including both traditional cyanotypes and more experimental work using multiple exposures and color manipulation. \n“What I enjoy about the cyanotype process is that it invites a balance between control and chance\,” says Booth. “The process is slow and tactile\, requires no darkroom\, uses relatively safe chemistry\, and can be developed with sunlight and water.” \n”I chose to create these place-focused works as a way to reinterpret the natural landscape of my home. I find that cyanotype is an excellent way to help me reflect on my relationship with the place I live.” \nBooth has been creating cyanotypes since 2019\, and has had her work included in multiple juried exhibitions\, including the Southern Tier Biennial in 2025 and Artscape in Jamestown in 2023\, 2024\, and 2025. Last year\, one of her cyanotypes was selected for an exhibition by the Griffin Museum of Photography in Massachusetts honoring Anna Atkins\, who is credited with being the originator of botanical cyanotypes. She has also exhibited her work at Hallwalls\, the Tri-County Arts Association\, and the North Shore Arts Alliance member shows.

SUMMARY:Heather Olson - From Howls to Horns: Our Shared Horizon
DESCRIPTION:My work focuses on showing specific species of wildlife that have been sidelined\, diminished\, and even erased by humans; It also shows species who display great fortitude and perseverance alongside the corrective measures of human intervention and science-based studies (‘High Hand’-the return of Elk in Pennsylvania). At its core\, this series illustrates that all species should have equal rights to coexist in our shared world. Some works explore stories of conflict\, courage\, and comeback (‘Dig Two Graves’-the Red Fox) while others convey my own ancestor’s role in the erasure of the Passenger Pigeon of northwestern Pennsylvania (‘A Part of Me Stole Their Souls’). \nThe work asks us to rethink the way that we observe\, treat\, and govern animals; It asks us to explore the complex systems of preference\, value\, and management practices—all put into place by humans and directed at these sentient\, sacred beings simply trying to make a living. The work also acts as a mirror-suggesting that with corrective measures\, respectful laws and governance\, and a greater sense of empathy\, our own journey towards future intergenerational sustainability could be within our reach. \nHeather Olson grew up in Asheville\, NY and\, as a child\, lived across the street from area painter\, Russell Welch. Heather was directly influence by artists\, Russell Welch and Jamestown-based artists and Southwestern Central elementary art teacher\, Patricia Micciche (Freet)\, and grew up continuing their traditions of observation and creative expression. Heather splits her time between Dewittville and Clifton Springs\, NY. She is the Executive Director and Gallery Curator of Main Street Arts. Heather has lived across the western US and Canada and owes much of her appreciation for places and animals to minds like by Aldo Leopold\, John Muir\, Annie Dillard\, and Theodore Roosevelt. When Heather is not creating she is spending time with her family\, friends\, and animals at her small farm-offering safe habitat and space for coexistence. \n“In wildness is the salvation of the world” -Henry David Thoreau \n’The Earth does not belong to us: we belong to the Earth.”

SUMMARY:Hurry Hill Maple Farm Family Program with Janet Woods @ Patterson Library
DESCRIPTION:The Hurry Hill Maple Farm Association has developed wonderful experiences for visitors–children\, families\, sugar makers\, or anyone curious about nature’s pure product. The maple sugaring process\, natural and cultural history\, lore\, and legend are on display with entertaining events\, educational activities\, and exhibits. \nThe Maple Museum is a new feature where young and old can see\, touch\, taste\, and listen to the past while learning about an important part of Pennsylvania’s agricultural heritage. \nA museum highlight is the story of the Newbery Medal award-winning book Miracles on Maple Hill by Virginia Sorensen. An extensive exhibit shows the people and places in the Edinboro and Cambridge Springs area that the author used in the book. The classic story is a significant contribution to the education of school children and maple sugaring communities. \nJanet Woods\, a lifelong maple syrup producer\, is the president of our association. With the guidance of Theresa Gamble\, project manager\, and the help of numerous volunteers\, we have put together a world-class maple museum that you can tour for free. (Please check the opening hours.) \nOur association partners every year with the Northwest PA Maple Association Taste and Tour weekend held during the maple sugaring season in March. All of the local sugarhouses are open for free tours. Since 2004\, the Hurry Hill Maple Farm and Museum has welcomed 3\,000 visitors annually. For details of the next Taste & Tour\, please refer to our Events page and visit pamaple.org. Dozens of schools\, community clubs\, and civic groups schedule visits to Hurry Hill from March until November. Contact sugarmaker\, Janet Woods\, to schedule a visit or for product information year-round. \n\nMIRACLES ON MAPLE HILL by Virginia Sorensen: A Chautauqua County Connection presented by Sugarmaker\, Janet WoodsThe Hurry Hill Farm Maple Museum is also proud to be home to the 1956 Newbery Medal awarded to Virginia Sorensen for her acclaimed children’s book\, Miracles on Maple Hill\, which isset in and around NW PA. Chautauqua County\, another maple region\, was home to a Clymer native\, Rev. Leonard Hoganboom\, the person whose experiences as a POW in WWII becamepart of the Miracles on Maple Hill story.Located in Edinboro\, Pennsylvania\, Hurry Hill Maple Farm and Museum is a non-profitorganization dedicated to producing and preserving traditional methods of maple syrup production. Sugarmaker Janet Woods created the Museum\, now in its 16th year\, boasts of 5\,000square feet of museum space\, a ½ mile interpretive trail\, exhibits in the sugarbush\, and over 3\,000 visitors each year. \nDonations to the association are welcome. We are a qualified 501 (c)3 non-profit organization.
