SUMMARY:Open Observatory Night
DESCRIPTION:At 7:30 the Martz-Kohl Observatories will be open to visitors. \nYou are welcome to tour the facility and view through several available telescopes\, weather permitting.  The observatory houses multiple telescopes to use for viewing celestial objects in the night sky.  The Kohl Telescope is a 20-inch classical Cassegrain reflecting telescope that was built by DFM Engineering in Colorado.  Also available for viewing\, located in the roll-off roof area of the observatory\, is a mounted 12-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain reflector telescope.  The Cassegrain reflector telescopes use a combination of the primary concave mirror and a secondary convex mirror.  Guests are also welcome to bring in their own telescopes to set up on the roll off roof area of the observatory\, weather permitting. \nWhen planning a visit to the observatory\, it is best to have seasonal attire on hand as the domes which house the telescopes\, as well as the roll-off roof area of the observatory\, are not heated.  \nThe observatory is located at 176 Robbins Hill Rd.\, Frewsburg\, NY.  The Martz-Kohl Observatory is an all-volunteer\, non-profit association [501(c)3] and does not charge for admission.  A non-member donation of $5.00 per adult and $2.00 per child or student is appreciated. \nThe Martz-Kohl Observatory houses one of the largest public robotic telescopes in the Northeastern United States.  On Open Observatory nights\, the public is welcome to come and tour the facility.  If the evening sky is clear\, the telescopes will be used to view the celestial sphere.  The observatory can be contacted at (716) 569-3689.  More information can be accessed at the observatory web site\, martzobservatory.org. \nAbout Martz-Kohl Observatory: \nThe Marshal Martz Memorial Astronomical Association\, Inc. is a non-profit organization devoted to the amateur astronomer. SUMMARY:The Many Colors of Galaxies: YOU Can Help NASA Decode the Cosmos
DESCRIPTION:How do galaxies grow and change over time\, and how can we tell from just a few lines of light? \nWe are pleased to host Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) astrophysicist and PhD candidate Sadie Coffin for an engaging presentation on galaxy evolution and participatory science.Coffin will explain how the unique lines in galaxy spectra serve as records of the Universe’s history\, acting as a cosmic time machine to track how distant galaxies interact\, evolve\, and form stars over deep time. By analyzing these spectral features\, astronomers can decode the complex properties of entire galaxy systems. \nHer doctoral research bridges the gap between complex galaxy spectroscopy and public participatory science through Redshift Wrangler\, a NASA-funded project she designed and leads.“By collaborating with volunteers to analyze galaxy light\, we are making astronomical research more open and accessible\,” says Coffin. “Projects like Redshift Wrangler prove that big-science discoveries don’t have to stay locked away in academic labs.”The presentation will explore how combining professional astronomical research with volunteer classifications helps map the cosmos\, illustrating why astronomers rely on this collaboration to accelerate major discoveries in astronomy—and how anyone can get involved. \nSadie Coffin is a fifth-year PhD candidate in Astrophysical Sciences and Technology at RIT\, where she studies galaxy evolution. SUMMARY:Lecture: Listening for Bumps in the Night: Gravitational Waves
DESCRIPTION:Imagine the universe as a vast\, silent ocean where the most violent events—the collision of massive black holes—send invisible “shudders” through the very fabric of space-time. To capture these faint whispers from the deep cosmos\, the NSF Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) utilizes colossal laser detectors in Washington and Louisiana. These instruments are so sensitive they can detect movements smaller than the width of an atom. After a decade of refining this incredible technology\, LIGO made history in 2015 by detecting a collision from 1.3 billion light-years away\, forever changing how we explore the deepest mysteries of our universe. \nWe are delighted to host Keith Thorne\, a research physicist who was at the heart of these historic astronomical breakthroughs. After earning his doctorate at Fermilab\, Keith joined the LIGO collaboration in 2003 and eventually led the real-time controls and computing groups at the Livingston\, Louisiana observatory. His technical leadership was instrumental in the first-ever detection of gravitational waves and the vital system upgrades that followed through 2024. DESCRIPTION:The Martz-Kohl Observatory invites you to a presentation by veteran engineer and amateur radio expert Mario Loreti on March 18 at 7:30 p.m. ET. His lecture\, “Radio Astronomy: A Different View of the Cosmos\,” explores the spectrum of the universe hidden from the human eye. While optical telescopes rely on visible light\, radio astronomy provides vital data that lenses cannot capture. Loreti will bridge these two worlds using a multi-media approach\, including audio derived from celestial objects. \nMario Loreti brings over 40 years of technical expertise to the observatory. A former Chief Engineer for WERG-FM and Lab Technician for the Penn State Behrend School of Engineering\, Loreti has spent decades collaborating with astrophysics departments and supporting faculty research. Now a volunteer for the Yahn Planetarium and a licensed amateur radio operator\, he is currently constructing his own radio telescope to further study the signature sounds of the stars. \nThe event will be held live at the observatory (176 Robbin Hill Rd\, Frewsburg\, NY 14738) and streamed via Zoom. A Q&A session will follow the talk\, and weather permitting\, the observatory will be open for public viewing. Artemis II will propel a crew of four into deep space for a ten-day mission of discovery. From their unique position near the lunar surface\, the crew will facilitate vital investigations into radiation and human biology\, gathering the “survival data” necessary to make long-term human presence in space a reality. \nLooking further ahead\, the presentation will illuminate the ambitious goals of Artemis III\, the mission destined to land the first humans near the lunar South Pole. This thirty-day expedition involves a complex sequence of maneuvers where two crew members will descend to the lunar surface for an intensive week of exploration. Their work will focus on lunar and planetary geology in a region that has remained largely mysterious until now. By conducting on-site science in the permanently shadowed craters of the South Pole\, these pioneers will uncover secrets about the solar system’s history and the presence of vital resources like water ice. \nAttendees can expect a comprehensive overview of the research being performed by the Artemis program\, ranging from advanced biological sciences to the technical challenges of lunar operations. SUMMARY:Searching for Life with the Habitable Worlds Observatory
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to attend a fascinating talk on humanity’s next great mission to search for life beyond Earth. Lee Feinberg\, Principal Architect of NASA’s proposed Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO)\, will present the science and engineering behind this future flagship telescope on Wednesday\, January 21\, 2026\, at 7:30 p.m. The talk will cover the key and driving science needs\, the architectures being studied\, and the technologies being used for the HWO. It will also discuss how lessons from previous space telescopes are being factored into the effort. \nThe Habitable Worlds Observatory is being designed as a massive\, next-generation space telescope—often called a “super-Hubble” — that will build on the technologies of the Hubble\, James Webb\, and Roman space telescopes. The primary goal of the HWO is to directly image Earth-like planets orbiting distant stars and analyze their atmospheres for biosignatures\, or chemical evidence of life. \nLee Feinberg brings a wealth of experience from NASA’s most critical space projects. He currently serves as the Principal Architect for the HWO at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. For over 20 years\, he was the Telescope Manager and optics lead for the revolutionary James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Prior to that\, he was part of the team responsible for repairing and upgrading the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). SUMMARY:Open Observatory Night
DESCRIPTION:At 8:00 the Martz-Kohl Observatories will be open to visitors. \nYou are welcome to tour the facility and view through several available telescopes\, weather permitting.  The observatory houses multiple telescopes to use for viewing celestial objects in the night sky.  The Kohl Telescope is a 20-inch classical Cassegrain reflecting telescope that was built by DFM Engineering in Colorado.  Also available for viewing\, located in the roll-off roof area of the observatory\, is a mounted 12-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain reflector telescope.  The Cassegrain reflector telescopes use a combination of the primary concave mirror and a secondary convex mirror.  Guests are also welcome to bring in their own telescopes to set up on the roll off roof area of the observatory\, weather permitting. \nWhen planning a visit to the observatory\, it is best to have seasonal attire on hand as the domes which house the telescopes\, as well as the roll-off roof area of the observatory\, are not heated.  \nThe observatory is located at 176 Robbins Hill Rd.\, Frewsburg\, NY.  The Martz-Kohl Observatory is an all-volunteer\, non-profit association [501(c)3] and does not charge for admission.  A non-member donation of $5.00 per adult and $2.00 per child or student is appreciated. \nThe Martz-Kohl Observatory houses one of the largest public robotic telescopes in the Northeastern United States.  On Open Observatory nights\, the public is welcome to come and tour the facility.  If the evening sky is clear\, the telescopes will be used to view the celestial sphere.  The observatory can be contacted at (716) 569-3689.  More information can be accessed at the observatory web site\, martzobservatory.org. \nAbout Martz-Kohl Observatory: \nThe Marshal Martz Memorial Astronomical Association\, Inc. is a non-profit organization devoted to the amateur astronomer.
