SUMMARY:An Evening with The Voice's Lucas West
DESCRIPTION:Rochester-based vocalist\, instrumentalist\, and songwriter Lucas West is thought by many to be a strong force of the next generation of popular music. \nThe 21-year-old West makes it his mission to pull from a variety of genres including rock\, pop\, jazz\, soul\, and R&B\, and bring it back to the mainstream. He placed third on Season 29 of The Voice: Battle of Champions\, and was John Legend’s finalist. He has performed in front of the likes of Adam Levine\, Kelly Clarkson\, Katy Perry\, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. \nWest is also known throughout Rochester\, Buffalo\, and New York State for his powerful rendition of the national anthem\, which he has performed at two Buffalo Bills home games. \nHe is a 2026 graduate of SUNY Fredonia’s School of Music with a BA in music and concentration in Jazz Studies. His journey on The Voice began in Fredonia’s Mason Hall\, where he recorded and submitted an audition video that ultimately led to his selection for the show. During the competition\, he worked closely with celebrity coaches Legend\, Levine\, and Clarkson\, gaining insight into the professional music industry.

DESCRIPTION:In an era of great change and great beauty\, the character of James McNeill Whistler. \nConsidered by some to be one of the great innovators of 19th-century art\, he was a contemporary of the Impressionists\, much admired by Van Gogh and Manet. Boldly experimental and famously witty\, Whistler disrupted the strict conventions of Victorian society in pursuit of a new cult of beauty\, creating “art for art’s sake” and earning himself a place in the history of great art. \nHe found a parallel between painting and music\, and entitled many of his paintings “arrangements\,” “harmonies\,” and “nocturnes\,” emphasizing the importance of tonal harmony in his work. His most famous painting\, Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 (1871)\, commonly known as Whistler’s Mother\, is a revered and often parodied portrait of motherhood. It is arguably one of the most famous paintings in history; and this cinematic production will unveil the artist behind the art. \nThe Tate Britain is holding the first major retrospective of Whistler in three decades. SUMMARY:1916 Silent Film\, Snow White w/ Live Music
DESCRIPTION:NATIONAL SILENT MOVIE DAY is September 29! Join us just three days later for a special screening of the long-lost first theatrical version of Snow White (1916) with live musical accompaniment. \nEveryone knows Disney’s 1937 animated film classic\, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs; but few are aware that a teenage Walt Disney growing up in Kansas City saw the original silent movie of the fairy tale. It was this 1916 silent film that inspired him to blaze a path in filmmaking and make his own version 21 years later. \nLike all silent films\, Snow White was made on flammable nitrate film stock; and for many years\, it was rumored to have been destroyed in a vault fire. But a single theatrical print was discovered in the Netherlands in 1992; and\, a heroic restoration was performed by the George Eastman House film archive. \nSince the Opera House dates all the way back to the silent film era\, it may not be the first time this film has been presented here. But now\, Seattle Harpist/Composer Leslie McMichael will perform her original score live on the concert harp for this 63-minute film\, accompanied by her sister Barbara McMichael on viola. \nNorthwest Film Forum commissioned McMichael to compose a new score for Snow White in 2016; and the 100-year-old film and McMichael’s live music premiered at opening night of Children’s Film Festival Seattle that year. Since then\, the old film and new live score have toured across the country. \nHow did McMichael approach the project of scoring the film? The harpist says that her DVD remote and digital timer were two modern tools that she relied on to compose a soundtrack that seamlessly fits the onscreen action. After watching the 63-minute film and writing longhand notes about every scene and character\, she developed musical themes to reflect the moods in the storyline. Certain motifs reappear in her score whenever a character appears – sweet Snow White has specific music\, as does the Witch\, the Huntsman\, the Prince\, and\, of course\, the Seven Dwarves! \nA graduate of Wellesley College\, McMichael’s musical pursuits include performance\, teaching\, recording\, and composition. She has toured the U.S.\, is on the faculty of Music Center of the Northwest\, and is a teaching artist with the Seattle Symphony. \nFrom solo music on concert\, Celtic and electric harps\, to composing\, arranging and recording original music; from Suzuki Method lessons for youth\, to harp classes for adults; from coffeehouses to concert halls … every day is different and fun in McMichael’s musical life!

DESCRIPTION:With a vocal and instrumental blend that has been dubbed “outstanding” and “meticulous\,” the members of Low Lily (Liz Simmons\, Flynn Cohen\, and newest member Lily Sexton) come together to create a signature sound that has captivated audiences throughout the US\, UK\, and Canada. \nLow Lily is the colloquial name for the Trout Lily\, a wildflower that grows in the northeast and in regions further afield. Like its namesake\, Low Lily the band has been blooming across the musical landscape since 2015. Simmons (guitar\, banjo & vocals)\, Cohen (guitar\, mandolin & vocals)\, and Sexton (fiddle & vocals) blend their considerable individual talents into a stylistic bouquet of energetic fiddle music\, introspective folk\, bluegrass\, and Americana. The trio has deep roots in the fiddle tune and singing traditions of North America and the Anglo-Celtic diaspora. \nBorn in San Francisco to musician parents\, Liz Simmons spent her early childhood traveling through the wilds of north America in a sky blue VW bus. Her parents were itinerant\, moving from California to Oregon\, then to Ketchikan\, AK\, where they played regular gigs in pubs for the locals. Once the family settled in rural New Hampshire\, Simmons received classical musical training\, but soon found her way back to folk music. She received a BA from Goddard College where she studied American vernacular music of the 1920s and 30s. She then went on to found Annalivia and then Low Lily with Flynn Cohen\, as well as perform alongside Long Time Courting\, Hannah Sanders\, EVA\, Livingston Taylor\, Tom Chapin\, and others. \nFlynn Cohen\, at the age of 11\, was drawn to the guitar after an injury left him unable to pursue his passion for sports. When he was in his mid-teens\, his aunt and uncle turned him onto the likes of Fairport Convention\, Michael Hedges\, The Bothy Band\, and Pentangle. At the time\, all he wanted was to play guitar like John Renbourn of Pentangle; so when the opportunity to study with Renbourn arose at the Dartington College of Arts in England\, he jumped at the chance. After graduating from Dartington\, he headed to Oakland\, CA\, to attend Mills College\, where he immersed himself in the Irish trad and bluegrass music scenes there. Ultimately\, he made his way to the east coast after a phone call with accordion champion John Whelan\, who offered him a job as his guitarist. Once in Boston\, he was also hired to accompany three incredible fiddle prodigies in their late teens – Laura Cortese\, Hanneke Cassel\, and Lissa Schneckenburger. Cohen has also accompanied luminaries such as Adrienne Young\, Cathie Ryan\, Ruth Moody\, and many more. \nLily Sexton is a fiddler\, singer\, and songwriter based in western Massachusetts. A student of classical violin beginning at the age of 4\, she continued a classical music education in violin at the Westport Suzuki School\, and the Talent Education Suzuki School. While pursuing a Bachelor’s degree at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst\, she shifted her focus to fiddle-playing in the traditional Appalachian style. Sexton’s roots have fostered in her a deep versatility; she is equally at home playing a Kenny Baker breakdown\, a Scottish air\, or finding that elusive 3rd vocal harmony part. Outside of Low Lily\, she is front-woman of the indie-folk band Splendid Torch. She is also beloved in the New England roots music scene as a founding member of the neo-bluegrass band Mamma’s Marmalade. \nLow Lily’s recordings have received noteworthy attention with two #1 songs on international folk radio and two Independent Music Award wins. DownBeat Magazine describes her as a performer poised to shape jazz for decades to come. She made a historic and memorable impact as the first woman to perform and tour full-time with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in the tenor saxophone chair from 2018 to 2020. \nAs a respected bandleader and composer\, she has headlined numerous prestigious concert venues and Jazz festivals around the world\, including the Kennedy Center\, and Alice Tully Hall. \nThurman has released five full-length recordings and has been nominated for an NAACP Image Award. DESCRIPTION:Fiddle tunes\, folk songs and fancy footwork are the featured fare from this acoustic duet\, who are longtime Opera House favorites! \nJohn Kirk is the primary vocalist and instrumental wizard on fiddle\, mandolin & more. Trish Miller plays banjo\, and guitar\, and provides fancy footwork with percussive dance steps. Together\, this married couple has been working and teaching in upstate New York for more than three decades. They present traditional tunes and witty songs with unique arrangements and warm clear vocals. \nOld time music is the basis for their repertoire\, but they also like to mix in some originals\, Celtic\, early country songs\, humorous selections\, and Appalachian clog dancing. Many songs and tunes are rooted in the local lore of the northeast woodlands. Their story-telling songs and poetic pieces make their shows fine entertainment for all ages. \nIn 2022\, Kirk was inducted into the North American (& NY) Fiddler’s Hall of Fame. The duet has twice been nominated for Eddie Awards in New York’s Capitol district. Both of them are music instructors at Skidmore College\, and Kirk is part of the music faculty at Bennington College\, as well. \nThey have been awarded numerous grants for concerts and teaching including their selection by the US State Department to visit various cities in Eastern Europe. As teaching artists\, Kirk & Miller have conducted school programs and residencies in music & dance heritage since the 1990s. For many years they have taught at summer music camps\, museums\, libraries\, coffeehouses and more.
