SUMMARY:Live at the Met: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay
DESCRIPTION:Added due to popular demand\, the Met-premiere production of Mason Bates’s The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay arrives in cinemas\, recorded live earlier this season. \nThe exhilarating operatic adaptation of Michael Chabon’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel follows two Jewish cousins who create a comic-book superhero\, hoping to recruit America into the fight against Nazism. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the dynamic new production by Tony Award–winning director Bartlett Sher. \nThis production runs approximately three hours\, seven minutes. \nThe Met: Live in HD is the Metropolitan Opera’s Peabody and Emmy Award–winning series of opera performances transmitted live from the stage of the Met in New York into movie theaters and event spaces worldwide. The series has made the Met the world’s leading provider of alternative cinema content and the only arts institution with an ongoing global series of this scale. When the series launched in 2006\, the Met was the first arts company to experiment this way. Since then\, the program has expanded\, with more than 32 million tickets sold to date\, and has been seen in virtually every important world capital from Paris to Cairo\, as well as in towns and villages spread across six continents. \nPart of Arts in the Afternoon\, which is sponsored by Dr. James M. & Marcia Merrins\, Live at the Met is underwritten with support from Daniel S. Kaufman and Timothy W. Beaver

SUMMARY:Live at the Met: I Puritani
DESCRIPTION:For gorgeous melody\, spellbinding coloratura\, and virtuoso vocal fireworks\, I Puritani has few equals. \nFor the first new Met production of Vincenzo Bellini’s final masterpiece in nearly 50 years – a striking staging by Charles Edwards\, who makes his company directorial debut after many successes as a set designer – the Met has assembled a world-beating quartet of stars\, conducted by Marco Armiliato\, for the demanding principal roles. \nSoprano Lisette Oropesa and tenor Lawrence Brownlee are Elvira and Arturo\, brought together by love and torn apart by the political rifts of the English Civil War\, with baritone Artur Ruciński as Riccardo\, betrothed to Elvira against her will\, and bass-baritone Christian Van Horn as Elvira’s sympathetic uncle\, Giorgio. SUMMARY:Pete Correale: As I Was Saying
DESCRIPTION:Pete Correale returns to the Opera House as part of his newest tour! \nPete has performed on numerous late night TV shows such as The Tonight Show\, Letterman and Conan. as well as filming three of his own one-hour television comedy specials\, THINGS WE DO FOR LOVE\, LET ME TELL YA and the last being FOR PETE’S SAKE. He has also released two comedy albums\, GIVE IT A REST and MADE FOR RADIO. \nPete is also the co-host of The Pete and Sebastian Show\, a podcast with comedian and longtime friend Sebastian Maniscalco. \nThe Pete and Sebastian Show is one of the most wildly popular comedy podcasts on air today.  The show is nearly10 years running\, with an ever-growing fanbase and has featured guests including Bill Burr\, Jay Mohr\, Bobby Lee\, Yannis Pappas\, Billy Gardell\, and more! \nAside from his podcast\, Pete has been a staff writer on several TV shows\, most recently Kevin Can Wait on CBS\, and The Crew on Netflix. \nPete’s love for entertainment started when he went off to college.  During his senior year\, Pete took an acting class and knew immediately what he wanted to do – be in show business.  This burning desire has evolved for over 20 years into what we know it as today – a reflective comedic take on his life and the experiences he’s been through. \nWith a conversational delivery and his trademark disarming regular guy attitude\, Pete makes you feel like you’re listening to the funniest guy at a party as opposed to just another comedian on a stage. \nHis tours continue to grow exponentially as more and more people discover him and immediately fall in love with his accessible and extremely relatable point of view. \nBecause of this\, Pete has evolved from being a must-see on the club scene to now a nationally recognized headlining theater act. \nMost recently he’s coming off of Sebastian Maniscalco’s record-breaking “It Ain’t Right” arena tour where he has been capturing the eyes and ears of fans all over the country.

SUMMARY:Live at the Met: La Boheme
DESCRIPTION:With its enchanting setting and spellbinding score\, the world’s most popular opera is as timeless as it is heartbreaking. Franco Zeffirelli’s picture-perfect production brings 19th-century Paris to the Met stage as Giacomo Puccini’s young friends and lovers navigate the joy and struggle of bohemian life. \nSoprano Juliana Grigoryan is the feeble seamstress Mimì\, opposite tenor Freddie De Tommaso as the ardent poet Rodolfo. Keri-Lynn Wilson conducts. Beaver

SUMMARY:Snowman & Coole: Super-Deluxe Fiddle\, Banjo & Song
DESCRIPTION:Through 25 years and thousands of shows together in bands such as The Foggy Hogtown Boys\, and The Lonesome Ace Stringband\, John Showman and Chris Coole have developed a deep and instinctual musical bond. Their music lurks in a truly unique space that is somewhere on the outskirts of old-time\, bluegrass\, and folk. The songs of John Hartford\, Hank Williams\, Dock Boggs\, and The Band share space with the fiddle tunes of Eck Robertson\, and Ed Haley. The duo’s original songs and tunes take in all these vistas and paint something both personal and timely. \nThey have performed across North America and Europe at festivals such as Merlefest\, Rockygrass\, Winnipeg Folk Festival\, Mariposa\, Wintergrass\, Gooikroots\, and The John Hartford Memorial Festival. In 2022\, the duo released two albums: Afield\, a collection of old-time fiddle tunes\, and Much Further Out than Inevitable – A Tribute to Some Music of John Hartford. \nShowman has made his mark as “one of the very best and most influential fiddle players in Canada.” (CIUT 89.5 FM). Over a 20-year career spanning 4\,500 shows across North America and Europe\, he’s become well-known as an exciting and innovative live musician and in demand as a session player\, a sideman and teacher. \nFrom his start as a professional in Montreal in 1996\, playing five nights a week in Irish pubs and folk clubs across eastern Canada\, Showman fell in love with the sound of traditional fiddle playing\, absorbing the playing of such greats as Tommy Peoples\, Kevin Burke\, Frankie Gavin\, Vassar Clements\, Eck Robertson and many others. Through careful study of written transcriptions and old recordings and a relentless pursuit of accurate reproduction\, he built his repertoire of tunes\, chops\, styles\, and technique\, and developed a sound and approach that is unique\, one that can relate to many genres of music. \nHe is the 2011 Appalachian Old-Time Fiddle Champion\, the first foreign-born man to ever win the contest; and his albums have been nominated for Juno Awards and won multiple Canadian Folk Music Awards. \nSince falling in love with the sound of folk and early country music at the age of 17\, one could loosely divide Coole’s 30-year career as a full-time musician into three eras – 10 years as a Toronto street and subway busker; 10 years playing bluegrass residencies around Toronto’s bar scene; and 10 years touring internationally. Throughout this musical journey\, he has perhaps become best known as being one of the leading purveyors of the modern clawhammer-style banjo. He has developed a highly personal style that is often described as instantly recognizable. \nCoole wrote his first song at the age of 7 – a 6/8 dirge about Wayne Gretzky. Since that auspicious and uniquely Canadian beginning\, he has continued to hone his craft\, and to date\, has recorded more than 50 original songs and instrumentals. Apart from appearing on his own projects\, his songs have been covered and recorded by artists such as Eli West\, Jenny Whiteley\, The Grasscals\, and The Sweet Lowdown. \nA sought-after teacher of banjo\, guitar\, and songwriting at workshops and festivals throughout Canada\, the U.S.\, and Europe\, these days he spends most of his time playing banjo with John Showman and The Lonesome Ace Stringband. \nThe Folk in Fredonia Music Series is sponsored by the Gilman Family

SUMMARY:Barcelona Harbor: 1800-1860
DESCRIPTION:The harbor we now know as Barcelona played a prominent role in the early settlement and development of Chautauqua County\, beginning with improvements by the Holland Land Company and continuing with federal appropriations aimed at improving navigation on Lake Erie. \nFor nearly 40 years in the 1800s\, Barcelona was one of the busiest communities in the county! Former Chautauqua County Historian Michelle Henry will discuss the investors who built piers and large commercial warehouses at Barcelona\, the Lake Erie storms that regularly threatened the shoreline and sailing vessels\, and the passenger ships that brought both prominent visitors and newly arriving immigrants to our county. \nHenry was appointed the Chautauqua County Historian in March 2000 and also served as the County’s Record Management Coordinator until she retired in January 2023. She is currently Research Historian with the NYS Office of Parks\, Recreation and Historic Preservation. \nPart of Here & There – Chautauqua County History\, Travelers\, & Memories \nAdmission is FREE\, although donations are gratefully accepted

SUMMARY:Spinal Tap 2 @ 1891 Fredonia Opera House
DESCRIPTION:Forty-one years after the release of the groundbreaking mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap\, the now estranged bandmates David St. Hubbins\, Nigel Tufnel\, and Derek Smalls (Michael McKean\, Christopher Guest\, and Harry Shearer) are forced to reunite for one final concert. Spinal Tap II: The End Continues also marks the resurrection of documentarian Marty Di Bergi (Rob Reiner)\, who once again tries to capture his favorite metal gods as they contemplate mortality—and the hope that their 12th drummer doesn’t join them in The Great Beyond. Joined by music royalty Paul McCartney and Elton John\, Spinal Tap wrestles with their checkered past to put on a concert that they hope will solidify their place in the pantheon of rock ’n’ roll. \n“Spinal Tap II holds onto the real sense that these men\, despite everything they’ve been through\, have loved each other almost their entire lives. Guest and McKean in particular met in college in the late 1960s\, and they’ve been playing music together ever since; there’s something beautiful about the fact that they’ve found their way to this moment\, after so many decades — one where the only laughter they care about is each other’s.” – Consequence \nRated R (Some Sexual References|Language)\, 83 mins. \nThe Opera House Cinema Series is sponsored by Lake Shore Savings Bank \n  \nCinema Series tickets are sold at the door only.  A book of 10 movie passes can be purchased separately at the Box Office\, online or at the door on movie night for $60. \nTickets Information:\nAdults – $7\nMembers/Seniors – $6.50\nStudents – $5

Riccardo Frizza takes the podium for one of opera’s most ravishing works. \nThe Met: Live in HD is the Metropolitan Opera’s Peabody and Emmy Award–winning series of opera performances transmitted live from the stage of the Met in New York into movie theaters and event spaces worldwide. SUMMARY:19th Century Chautauqua County Pottery
DESCRIPTION:Town of Hanover Historian Vince Martonis has been researching and collecting pottery vessels and sherds since the 1980s. He has had a particular interest in three Chautauqua County Potteries: the Caleb Mathews Pottery of Gerry\, the Fenton and Whittemore Pottery of Jamestown and Fluvanna\, and the Haven and Kenyon Pottery of Sheridan. \nMartonis will discuss his research into these particular potteries\, including the form and glaze elements the potters used\, which enabled him to draw conclusions about what they produced. He also will discuss how the potters mixed local and stoneware clays to make vessels\, and how to identify unmarked pieces. \nMartonis is the author of two recent books about early 1800s redware pottery sites in Chautauqua County. The Haven and Kenyon Redware Pottery of Sheridan (1818) and The Caleb Mathews (1821) Redware Pottery of Gerry were both published in 2024. His research into the Haven and Kenyon Pottery is a particularly interesting story. He discovered evidence of the Pottery in an 1819 Fredonia newspaper and spent four years of research to locate its site. Since then\, with the current property owners’ permission\, he has been able to collect more than 3\,200 sherds from the site. \nPhoto credit: OBSERVER newspaper \nPart of Here & There – Chautauqua County History\, Travelers\, & Memories \nPresented in Partnership with the Darwin R. Barker Historical Museum \nAdmission is FREE\, although donations are gratefully accepted

SUMMARY:HELP!
DESCRIPTION:2025 marks the 60th anniversary of the release of The Beatles’ film Help! and the Opera House is celebrating. Riding the vibe of 1964’s A Hard Day’s Night\, Help! was released the very next year. The premiere in London’s West End was attended by that season’s royal celebrities: Princess Margaret and the Earl of Snowdon. \nDeparting from the autobiographical exaggerations of their successful debut musical\, A Hard Day’s Night\, the Beatles once again offer up a melding of song and slapstick. After Ringo stumbles upon a valuable gem\, the band starts getting harassed by a fringe religious group. To escape their sudden stalkers\, the boys hit the road traveling the globe. \nNo one could accuse the new film of adherence to reality. However\, film director Richard Lester had a much larger budget than for the previous film; and Help! was shot in color\, not only in London\, but in exotic locales such as the Austrian Alps and the Bahamas. According to some accounts\, it was during the shoot that George Harrison discovered the sounds of Indian music\, a major influence in later compositions and recordings of the Beatles. \nJohn Lennon felt that the band had less artistic input than for A Hard Day’s Night\, but he acknowledged that after the first film\, he and the others “were smoking marijuana for breakfast\,” and “nobody could communicate with us.” They also were exhausted from their latest round of non-stop touring\, writing\, and recording. \nFortunately\, Help! was a satirical take on James Bond films; it also borrowed from the Marx Brothers in 1933’s Duck Soup\, and from the abstract humor of Peter Sellers in The Goon Show of the 1950s. The newest Beatles hits from the soundtrack included You’re Going to Lose That Girl\, Ticket to Ride\, and of course\, Help! \nThough the film received mixed reviews from established critics\, fans of the Beatles filled local theatres\, including Fredonia’s Winter Garden\, now the Opera House. As for 21st century reviews\, Rotten Tomatoes gives the film an 86 percent rating\, declaring “the Fab Four display their infectious charm in this madcap adventure.” Who could resist? \nRated G\, 92 mins. \nAccording to 24/7 Wall St.\, the average movie ticket price in 1965 was $1.01! So\, tickets to our screening of Help! will be $1 (you keep the penny)! Tickets sold at the door only. \n  \nHelp! is sponsored by The Wretched Group and the Fredonia High School Class of 1970
