SUMMARY:The Erie Railroad Comes to Dunkirk
DESCRIPTION:The New York and Erie Rail Road was the first railroad to link the Atlantic and the Great Lakes; and when it opened in 1851 it was the longest railroad in the world. \nRailroad historian William D. Burt will show how it happened — the choice of Dunkirk as the western terminus\, the original line NY&E built and then abandoned in favor of a better one\, and the 1851 grand opening celebration. He will discuss how railroad directors speculated in Dunkirk land and laid out several blocks of the city\, and how many Dunkirk streets are named for them. \nWhat is the Erie’s legacy in Dunkirk? This well-illustrated presentation covers it all. \nBill published his first history article when he was in high school and has continued writing\, off and on\, ever since. Following a career in the railroad industry\, he took up researching and writing about the history of the fascinating business\, with a primary interest in Eastern railroading\, particularly the Erie Lackawanna and its predecessor railroads. \nHe holds a BA in Political Science from SUNY Geneseo and a dual MS in Transportation Planning and Engineering and Management Science from Polytechnic Institute of New York (now part of NYU). He culminated a 27-year career in the railroad industry as President and COO of the Livonia\, Avon & Lakeville Railroad and its subsidiaries B&H Rail Corp. and Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad. \nPart of Here & There – Chautauqua County History\, Travelers\, & Memories \nAdmission is FREE\, although donations are gratefully accepted

SUMMARY:Live at the Met: El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego
DESCRIPTION:The Metropolitan Opera’s 2025-26 Live in HD season comes to a close with a live transmission of American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s first opera\, a magical-realist portrait of Mexico’s painterly power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera\, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz. \nFashioned as a reversal of the Orpheus and Euridice myth\, the story depicts Frida\, sung by leading mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard\, leaving the underworld on the Day of the Dead and reuniting with Diego\, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez. The famously feuding pair briefly relive their tumultuous love\, embracing both the passion and the pain before bidding the land of the living a final farewell. \nMusic Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met-premiere staging of Frank’s opera\, a “confident\, richly imagined score” (The New Yorker) that “bursts with color and fresh individuality” (Los Angeles Times). The vibrant new production\, taking enthusiastic inspiration from Frida and Diego’s paintings\, is directed and choreographed by Deborah Colker. \nThe Met: Live in HD is the Metropolitan Opera’s Peabody and Emmy Award–winning series of opera performances transmitted live from the stage of the Met in New York into movie theaters and event spaces worldwide. The series has made the Met the world’s leading provider of alternative cinema content and the only arts institution with an ongoing global series of this scale. When the series launched in 2006\, the Met was the first arts company to experiment this way. Since then\, the program has expanded\, with more than 32 million tickets sold to date\, and has been seen in virtually every important world capital from Paris to Cairo\, as well as in towns and villages spread across six continents. \nPart of Arts in the Afternoon\, which is sponsored by Dr. James M. & Marcia Merrins\, Live at the Met is underwritten with support from Daniel S. Kaufman and Timothy W. Beaver

SUMMARY:Ten Cent Howl
DESCRIPTION:Back before computers and cell phones and i-everything\, when we were still trying to find our way\, in the corners and pockets of our country when things were simpler\, though always complicated by the human condition\, there was music. It spoke of the lives of our families; the older generations before you or me\, before Mom and Dad\, before Grandma and Grandpa. It was the feeling of the soft blades of grass between your toes on a warm summer day; of a tall cold glass of lemonade after a back-breaking day of work in the hot sun. It was dancing with your best girl under the stars. It was the voice of life and family and experience and love and heartbreak. It is where we come from and who we are; our roots. \nGenerations later\, Ten Cent Howl has distilled that distinctly American experience into song once more. This popular regional band makes its debut performance at the Opera House. \nBand members include: \nBill Smith – Vocals\, acoustic guitar\nJerry Hall – Bass\, vocals\nRandy VanWey – Drums\nCharlie Wesley – Electric guitar\nSasha Pack – Keyboards \n“Ten Cent Howl managed to marry the influences of bluegrass\, rockabilly\, primal rock ’n’ roll and Pogues-like punk-folk with strength and vitality.” — Jeff Miers\, The Buffalo News \n“This is a unique band with plenty of lyrical and musical sweetness. This includes exquisite vocals\, sensational and evocative original song-writing\, and spectacular musicianship.” — Jay Burney\, The Public

SUMMARY:Turner & Constable
DESCRIPTION:Two of Britain’s greatest painters\, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable were also the greatest of rivals. Born within a year of each other\, both used landscape painting to reflect the changing world around them. Tate Britain is bringing these two greats together for a groundbreaking exhibition\, in London from November 2025 to April 2026\, and Exhibition on Screen once again has exclusive and privileged access to bring their extraordinary art and remarkable stories to the big screen so that both can be enjoyed together. Don’t miss this opportunity to see these greats side-by-side\, as they so often were in life\, on the big screen for the first time. \nTurner’s blazing sunsets and sublime scenes from his travels and Constable’s idealized depictions of beloved places from home whipped the public of the time into a frenzy of enthusiasm. Critics compared their starkly different styles to a clash of “fire and water.” \nMarking 250 years since their births\, this unmissable new cinematic production explores Turner and Constable’s intertwined lives and legacies alongside the groundbreaking Tate exhibition. Discover unexpected sides to both artists with intimate views of sketchbooks and personal items and insights from leading experts. This is not to be missed. \nThis production runs approximately one hour\, 30 minutes. \nPart of Arts in the Afternoon\, which is sponsored by Dr. James M. & Marcia Merrins

SUMMARY:The Music of Simon & Garfunkel
DESCRIPTION:Swearingen & Kelli recreate the music\, memories and magic of the most famous folk-rock duo of our time\, Simon & Garfunkel. \nAJ Swearingen has been performing this music for twenty years exhibiting a mastery of Paul Simon’s intricate guitar playing. His deep baritone blends perfectly with Jayne Kelli’s angelic vocals delivering a true tribute to the sound of the 1960’s Greenwich Village coffeehouse performances. \nThe duo is on a mission to share this iconic music to new audiences around the country. Both artists were heavily inspired by the great 70s singer-songwriters\, but their unique ability to channel the sounds of Simon & Garfunkel is immediately apparent when you hear them perform these classic songs live. \nBroadway World calls describes the show as “one of the most talented duos of today playing the music of one of THE most famous duos of yesterday.” \nSongs in the performance include: \nHOMEWARD BOUND\nMRS. ROBINSON\n59TH STREET BRIDGE SONG\nTHE BOXER\nSCARBOROUGH FAIR\nBRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER\nCECILIA\nAMERICA\nHAZY SHADE OF WINTER\nSOUND OF SILENCE\nI AM A ROCK\nTHE DANGLING CONVERSATION\nOLD FRIENDS / BOOKENDS\nONLY LIVING BOY IN NEW YORK\nAT THE ZOO\nPOEM ON THE UNDERGROUND WALL\nFAKIN IT\nWE GOT A GROOVY THING\nBLEEKER STREET\nSPARROW\nRICHARD CORY\nKEEP THE CUSTOMER SATISFIED\nFLOWERS NEVER BEND WITH THE RAINFALL \nHailing from Lapeer\, Michigan songstress Kelli first crossed paths with Pennsylvania native Swearingen over a decade ago at a songwriters club in Florida. \nAfter becoming fast friends and bandmates\, they eloped in Punta Cana and headed for Nashville\, where their music continues to evolve. This past fall’s release\, Build Myself Up From the Ground\, garnered features on The Bluegrass Situation\, Wide Open Country\, and Americana Highways\, who praised them for sounding “as good as John Prine with Bonnie Raitt on Angel From Montgomery.” \nSwearingen & Kelli have shared the stage with artists including David Bromberg\, Crystal Gayle and Kenny Rogers. Swearingen’s song “You’re Not Here With Me” was recorded by folk icon Tom Rush featuring Nanci Griffith on his album\, What I Know.

SUMMARY:Jamestown's Trolley #93 Marks 100th Birthday
DESCRIPTION:The Jamestown Street Railway Trolley Car #93 marks its 100th birthday this year. \nPut in service in 1926\, it was one of the many street cars that serviced passengers somewhere within Erie County\, NY\, Erie County\, PA\, and Chautauqua County. It is arguably the last surviving stand-alone car remaining from these areas. \nA group of volunteers has been working since 2014 to restore the trolley car\, a project that is now nearing completion. While pretty much cosmetically restored\, there is still some work to be done on the trucks (the four railroad type wheel assembly that supports the trolley on the rails)\, but that is waiting on the completion of its final display location. Plans for a display building in conjunction with the Fenton History Center are moving forward \, while fundraising for the project continues toward providing all that is necessary to ensure that this last remaining piece of Chautauqua County streetcar history is preserved. \nProject Volunteer Bob Johnston will talk about this important piece of Chautauqua County history and provide more information on its status and plans to celebrate its 100th birthday. \nPart of Here & There – Chautauqua County History\, Travelers\, & Memories \nAdmission is FREE\, although donations are gratefully accepted

SUMMARY:Live at the Met: Tristan Und Isolde
DESCRIPTION:After years of anticipation\, a truly unmissable event arrives in cinemas worldwide as the electrifying Lise Davidsen tackles one of the ultimate roles for dramatic soprano: the Irish princess Isolde in Richard Wagner’s transcendent meditation on love and death. Heroic tenor Michael Spyres stars opposite Davidsen as the love-drunk Tristan. \nThe momentous occasion also marks the advent of a new\, Met-debut staging by Yuval Sharon – hailed by The New York Times as “the most visionary opera director of his generation” and the first American to direct an opera at the famed Wagner festival in Bayreuth – as well as Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s first time leading Tristan und Isolde at the Met. \nMezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova reprises her portrayal of Brangäne\, alongside bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny\, who sings Kurwenal after celebrated Met appearances in Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer and Ring cycle. Bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green makes an important role debut as King Marke. Beaver

SUMMARY:Chautauqua County and America's 250th
DESCRIPTION:America celebrates the 250th Anniversary of its independence this year; and all across the nation events are being planned to commemorate this milestone. Chautauqua County is no different. \nThere were no Revolutionary War battles in Chautauqua County\, and precious few Native Americans and no white settlers living here\, Consequently people generally think our Revolutionary War heritage consists only of our veterans buried in local cemeteries and possibly a very few artifacts brought in by the earliest families. However\, there are half a dozen or so ways in which the land that is now Chautauqua County did have some particular relevance to the war. \nChautauqua County Historian Norman Carlson will examine these ways in this talk. From the personal notebook of Eliakim Garfield which documented events between 1771 and 1797\, including the outbreak of the Revolutionary War\, and now resides at the Fenton Historical Center in Jamestown\, to Continental currency notes from 1776 that were used to finance the war later found in Ripley\, to suspicion that alleged turncoat Simon Ginty lived for a time in Chautauqua County. These connections and more will be explored by Carlson. \nCarlson has been Chautauqua County’s Historian since 2024. He has extensive experience in the field having spent nearly 30 years as Collections Manager at the Fenton History Center in Jamestown and having been highly active in various local history organizations. Notably\, he has volunteered with the Busti Historical Society for more than 50 years and has been involved with the Busti Bicentennial Committee\, reflecting his dedication to preserving and promoting local history. \nPart of Here & There – Chautauqua County History\, Travelers\, & Memories \nAdmission is FREE\, although donations are gratefully accepted

SUMMARY:Live at the Met: I Puritani
DESCRIPTION:For gorgeous melody\, spellbinding coloratura\, and virtuoso vocal fireworks\, I Puritani has few equals. \nFor the first new Met production of Vincenzo Bellini’s final masterpiece in nearly 50 years – a striking staging by Charles Edwards\, who makes his company directorial debut after many successes as a set designer – the Met has assembled a world-beating quartet of stars\, conducted by Marco Armiliato\, for the demanding principal roles. \nSoprano Lisette Oropesa and tenor Lawrence Brownlee are Elvira and Arturo\, brought together by love and torn apart by the political rifts of the English Civil War\, with baritone Artur Ruciński as Riccardo\, betrothed to Elvira against her will\, and bass-baritone Christian Van Horn as Elvira’s sympathetic uncle\, Giorgio. \nThe Met: Live in HD is the Metropolitan Opera’s Peabody and Emmy Award–winning series of opera performances transmitted live from the stage of the Met in New York into movie theaters and event spaces worldwide. SUMMARY:Pete Correale: As I Was Saying
DESCRIPTION:Pete Correale returns to the Opera House as part of his newest tour! \nPete has performed on numerous late night TV shows such as The Tonight Show\, Letterman and Conan. as well as filming three of his own one-hour television comedy specials\, THINGS WE DO FOR LOVE\, LET ME TELL YA and the last being FOR PETE’S SAKE. He has also released two comedy albums\, GIVE IT A REST and MADE FOR RADIO. \nPete is also the co-host of The Pete and Sebastian Show\, a podcast with comedian and longtime friend Sebastian Maniscalco. \nThe Pete and Sebastian Show is one of the most wildly popular comedy podcasts on air today.  The show is nearly10 years running\, with an ever-growing fanbase and has featured guests including Bill Burr\, Jay Mohr\, Bobby Lee\, Yannis Pappas\, Billy Gardell\, and more! \nAside from his podcast\, Pete has been a staff writer on several TV shows\, most recently Kevin Can Wait on CBS\, and The Crew on Netflix. \nPete’s love for entertainment started when he went off to college.  During his senior year\, Pete took an acting class and knew immediately what he wanted to do – be in show business.  This burning desire has evolved for over 20 years into what we know it as today – a reflective comedic take on his life and the experiences he’s been through. \nWith a conversational delivery and his trademark disarming regular guy attitude\, Pete makes you feel like you’re listening to the funniest guy at a party as opposed to just another comedian on a stage. \nHis tours continue to grow exponentially as more and more people discover him and immediately fall in love with his accessible and extremely relatable point of view. \nBecause of this\, Pete has evolved from being a must-see on the club scene to now a nationally recognized headlining theater act. \nMost recently he’s coming off of Sebastian Maniscalco’s record-breaking “It Ain’t Right” arena tour where he has been capturing the eyes and ears of fans all over the country.
