SUMMARY:"5 Centuries of Duos" Concert with the Mecham Duo
DESCRIPTION:You will recognize the Mecham brothers\, Aaron & Boaz\, from their many amazing virtuosic violin performances on special occasions at St. Luke’s. The sound of their instruments in the church is unparalleled\, and this special program will explore duos from the 1600’s through the 20th century on violins\, and violin and piano/organ from historically significant composers (Castello\, Graun\, Schubert\, and Hahn) highlighted in the Mechams’ studies of Historical Performance at Oberlin. They will also be featuring a 20th century work by rising contemporary composer Nakai Weeks. During the 5 Centuries of Duos concert\, Aaron’s & Boaz will also provide short discussions on the pieces that give historical context and highlight the changing musical styles as we span 500 years of music. As part of St. Luke’s concert series\, admittance is free\, with free-will donations accepted.

SUMMARY:Pride Sunday & Juneteenth
DESCRIPTION:St. Luke’s is pleased to welcome Bishop Eugene Sutton on Sunday\, June 14\, as our guest preacher and celebrant as we gather to mark both Pride Sunday and Juneteenth. The convergence of these observances creates a meaningful day of worship\, learning\, and reflection as we celebrate God’s liberating work in human history and in our own lives. \nBishop Sutton currently serves as Senior Pastor at Chautauqua and as an Assisting Bishop in the Diocese of Washington. He previously served as Bishop of Maryland\, where he became widely known for his thoughtful leadership\, pastoral presence\, and commitment to justice and reconciliation throughout the Church and wider community. \nThe convergence of Pride Sunday and Juneteenth invites us into an important and holy conversation. Both observances call us to reflect on human dignity\, freedom\, belonging\, and the ongoing work of creating communities where all people are recognized as bearing the image of God. They remind us that liberation is not simply an event in the past\, but an ongoing call to truth\, healing\, and faithful action. \nIn addition to preaching and celebrating at worship\, Bishop Sutton will lead our Adult Forum at 9am and speak on the work of reparations. Throughout his ministry\, he has engaged deeply in conversations surrounding racial healing\, historical truth-telling\, and the Church’s role in confronting the enduring consequences of injustice. Reparations work extends beyond financial considerations; it also involves memory\, relationship\, accountability\, and the difficult but hopeful work of repairing what has been broken. \nThis will be an opportunity not only to hear from a gifted preacher and teacher\, but also to engage questions that continue to shape both the Church and society today. We encourage everyone to join us for as we work to foster God’s reconciling work in this world.

SUMMARY:Soup-or Chili Cook-Off
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, following the final session of the Annual Meeting at the 10 am service\, St. Luke’s hosts an annual Soup-or Chili Cook-Off: Chefs donate their best soups and chilis\, while St. Luke’s community votes for the best culinary creation. \nParticipants pay $2 to purchase a bowl and spoon – plus $1 per scoop of soup. The soup and chili (one in each category) which receive the most “votes” (that is\, scoops of soup) wins! All proceeds from the fundraiser benefit will support a St. Luke’s youth pilgrimage to Italy in February. Six of St. Luke’s youth (from the Confirmation Classes of 2024-26) will be walking the Via Francigena\, an ancient pilgrimage route from Viterbo to Rome. \nTo make this fundraiser a success\, we need YOU: Contestants interested in entering their soup or chili\, contact Jessica Frederick to sign up. For those who are not culinarily-inclined\, bring your appetite and a friend on January 25th.

SUMMARY:Special Film Screening of Sugarcane
DESCRIPTION:St. Luke’s Dismantling Racism Commission invites you to a screening of the documentary Sugarcane on Friday\, January 23 at 7:00 PM at Jamestown Community College’s Scharmann Theatre. \nA stunning tribute to the resilience of Native people and their way of life\, Sugarcane is the debut feature documentary by Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie. The film is set in the wake of the 2021 discovery of unmarked graves at a former Indian residential school in Canada\, bringing renewed attention to the forced separation\, assimilation\, and abuse experienced by Indigenous children in church-run boarding schools. \nThrough intimate storytelling\, Sugarcane sheds light on painful histories while also honoring the strength of Indigenous communities as they confront intergenerational trauma and work toward healing and renewal. \nThis screening is part of St. Luke’s ongoing commitment to truth-telling\, listening\, and the work of dismantling racism. All are welcome and the Event is free.
