SUMMARY:Books Unlimited January Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us each month for our Adult Fiction In-Person Book Club. \nJanuary’s Selection:Small\, Great Things by Jodi Picoult \nGoodreads Choice Award Nominee for Readers’ Favorite Fiction (2016) \nRuth Jefferson is a labor and delivery nurse at a Connecticut hospital with more than twenty years’ experience. During her shift\, Ruth begins a routine checkup on a newborn\, only to be told a few minutes later that she’s been reassigned to another patient. The parents are white supremacists and don’t want Ruth\, who is African American\, to touch their child. The hospital complies with their request\, but the next day\, the baby goes into cardiac distress while Ruth is alone in the nursery. Does she obey orders or does she intervene? \nRuth hesitates before performing CPR and\, as a result\, is charged with a serious crime. Kennedy McQuarrie\, a white public defender\, takes her case but gives unexpected advice: Kennedy insists that mentioning race in the courtroom is not a winning strategy. Conflicted by Kennedy’s counsel\, Ruth tries to keep life as normal as possible for her family—especially her teenage son—as the case becomes a media sensation. As the trial moves forward\, Ruth and Kennedy must gain each other’s trust\, and come to see that what they’ve been taught their whole lives about others—and themselves—might be wrong. \nWith incredible empathy\, intelligence\, and candor\, Jodi Picoult tackles race\, privilege\, prejudice\, justice\, and compassion—and doesn’t offer easy answers. Small Great Things is a remarkable achievement from a writer at the top of her game. \n\nCopies are available through the library system and at our front desk. \nRegistration is requested. A copy of the book club selection can be reserved during registration. \nhttps://sinclairvillelibrary.org/…/books-unlimited…/

SUMMARY:Virtual Adult Fiction Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Book Club Selection: For One More Day by Mitch Albom \n“Every family is a ghost story…” \nMitch Albom mesmerized readers around the world with his number one New York Times bestsellers\, The Five People You Meet in Heaven and Tuesdays with Morrie. Now he returns with a beautiful\, haunting novel about the family we love and the chances we miss. \nFor One More Day is the story of a mother and a son\, and a relationship that covers a lifetime and beyond. It explores the question: What would you do if you could spend one more day with a lost loved one? \nAs a child\, Charley “Chick” Benetto was told by his father\, “You can be a mama’s boy or a daddy’s boy\, but you can’t be both.” So he chooses his father\, only to see the man disappear when Charley is on the verge of adolescence.Decades later\, Charley is a broken man. His life has been crumbled by alcohol and regret. He loses his job. He leaves his family. He hits bottom after discovering his only daughter has shut him out of her wedding. And he decides to take his own life.He makes a midnight ride to his small hometown\, with plans to do himself in. But upon failing even to do that\, he staggers back to his old house\, only to make an astonishing discovery. His mother\, who died eight years earlier\, is still living there\, and welcomes him home as if nothing ever happened.. \nWhat follows is the one “ordinary” day so many of us yearn for\, a chance to make good with a lost parent\, to explain the family secrets\, and to seek forgiveness. Somewhere between this life and the next\, Charley learns the astonishing things he never knew about his mother and her sacrifices. And he tries\, with her tender guidance\, to put the crumbled pieces of his life back together. \nThrough Albom’s inspiring characters and masterful storytelling\, readers will newly appreciate those whom they love and may have thought they’d lost in their own lives. For One More Day is a book for anyone in a family\, and will be cherished by Albom’s millions of fans worldwide. \n\nCopies of book club title are available thru the library system. \nRegister using Event & Program Registration. \nYou can request a copy be reserved during registration.
