SUMMARY:Natural Papermaking Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Plants to Paper – Deb Eck is a book binder and paper maker who has studied papermaking from East to West under a variety of master paper makers. In this hands-on\, wet and messy workshop she will walk participants through the basic steps of harvesting\, preparing and making paper from locally sourced plant fibers. Participants will have the opportunity to make several sheets of paper from a variety of pre-prepared fibers. Students will leave with handouts and sheets of paper they have made. \nFiber Collection & Preparation: I’ll demo how I prepare fibers to work with\, discuss what plants make good paper and how to increase your chances of success by adding in other fibers commonly used in paper making. Students will not have to handle any chemicals during the workshop\, safe handling and preparation techniques will be shared! \nPulp Creation: Students will explore the two easiest methods of preparing fibers – manual and mechanical beating – be prepared for an arm workout – paper making is not for the weak!!Sheet Formation: We will set up vats of different fibers and the group will share them to form sheets of plant based paper using a Western mold and deckle.Drying: We will discuss different finishing techniques – we will use our body weight and then a nipping press to remove most of the moisture. Participants will leave with their paper sandwiched in blotter sheets to dry under weights at home \nThe cost for this class is $35. Please register using this link:https://form.jotform.com/251594825152157 \nPayment will be collected before class. Thank you for joining us!

SUMMARY:Introduction to Permaculture & Native Plant Communities
DESCRIPTION:The Botany Barn is happy to host another native plant grower/enthusiast to learn about the benefits of permaculture! Permaculture essentially means permanent agriculture. The pandemic demonstrated how easily food supply chains can break down. Growing a food forest and investing in perennials\, bushes or trees that provide food for you as well as the natural world can help support the environment while feeding your family. Learn the basics to help you get started and how native plants are essential to providing food security to you and the natural world that surrounds us.This educational event is FREE and open to the public! It would help us out if you could register here: https://form.jotform.com/251594825152157

SUMMARY:2nd Mushroom Identification & Citizen Science Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Rej (amateur mycology enthusiast) for a FREE workshop where we discuss techniques for identifying mushrooms and practice what we learn in the field. Techniques covered will include observing the mushroom’s physical characteristics and environment\, its reaction to UV light and chemical reagents\, and if all else fails\, DNA sequencing.Starting with a walk through the woods behind the Botany Barn\, we will discuss what details to pay attention to in the field and how to take good photos for identification purposes. Especially interesting or tough to identify mushrooms will be collected to examine more closely back at the Botany Barn after the walk.We will also go over how to submit mushrooms for DNA sequencing as part of Mycota Labs’ 2025 summer continental mycoblitz (more information about Mycota Labs can be found here: https://mycota.com/continental-mycoblitz/). Voucher slips for submissions will be provided. An iNaturalist account is required for those interested in sending their collections for DNA sequencing.Since we will be walking through field and forest\, please dress accordingly. Trail is not difficult\, but the ground is uneven and sometimes muddy in certain areas.Although this is a free event\, we ask that you register so we can be better prepared.PLEASE REGISTER HERE: https://form.jotform.com/251594825152157
