SUMMARY:Jennifer Anderson In-Person Gallery Talk and Drypoint Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, April 25th\, for an in-person gallery talk and drypoint demonstration by 2025 Artist-in-Residence Jennifer Anderson! Last year\, Anderson spent a week at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute and focused on bird portraiture as a way of seeing – and honoring – the California Condor and the American Kestrel. The portraits ask the viewer to linger: to meet a gaze\, to sense personality\, and to acknowledge the dignity of a living being. \nAnderson will speak on her residency and artworks\, as well as give a live demonstration on how she created her drypoint etchings. Guests will be able to ask questions during the gallery talk and hear about the artwork directly from the artist herself. \nEvent is FREE to members – regular admission for non-members. \nFeatured artwork: Jennifer Anderson. Stay and Tell Your Story. Drypoint with chine collé\, 2025.

SUMMARY:A Celebration of Stories and Science from The Spark Bird Podcast
DESCRIPTION:Join RTPI and BWD Magazine (Bird Watcher’s Digest) to learn more about The Spark Bird Project from founder Jenn Lodi-Smith\, Ph.D.\, the ongoing community science initiative gathering\, sharing\, and studying the stories of people’s passion for birds! Connect with fellow bird enthusiasts to learn more about the project\, enjoy spark bird stories\, and get an update on what we are discovering from over 400 spark birders and growing. \nJenn Lodi-Smith will be joining us via Zoom on May 1\, from 1:00 – 2:00 pm. (a 40-minute presentation followed by 10 minutes for questions/comments). Seating and a viewing screen will be set up in the Green Gallery\, and the public may speak with Jenn in real time during the presentation. Viewers may also engage with the Zoom at home. Light refreshments will be available in the RTPI lobby. \nWhat is the Spark Bird Project? \nThe Spark Bird Project is an ongoing participatory community social science initiative designed to gather\, share\, and study the stories of people’s passion for birds while gaining scientific insights into a critical piece in the ecology of birds: birders themselves. The Spark Bird Project leverages the tools of social science to study spark bird stories\, with research findings going directly back to community partners to inform their efforts towards engaging people in birding. The knowledge gained from The Spark Bird Project helps to craft inclusive experiences that can facilitate spark bird moments for the benefit of the birding community\, the new birder\, the economy\, and – most importantly – the birds and our world! By understanding what hooks and sustains birders\, The Spark Bird Project helps grow the constituency of individuals creatively working to conserve and protect our planet. The Spark Bird Project also helps birders better understand each other by sharing spark bird stories publicly at https://www.spark-bird.org/stories and through The Spark Bird Podcast.

SUMMARY:RTPI 2026 Plein Art Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Roger Tory Peterson Institute in Jamestown\, New York\, is a living embodiment of the Peterson Field Guide. It is a gateway to the natural area wonders that inspired Roger Tory Peterson to his career as one of the world’s premier artist-naturalists and international ambassador for the protection of nature. With a 27-acre nature preserve of wildflower gardens\, pollinator meadows\, and mature stands of hemlock trees\, the Peterson Preserve is a sanctuary for visitors. To celebrate this and other natural areas in Chautauqua County\, RTPI is thrilled to announce our fifth annual Plein Air Festival. \nThe Roger Tory Peterson Institute Plein Air Festival is a three-day\, open-enrollment plein air event in Chautauqua County\, New York. Artists will have the opportunity to discover the beautiful natural scenery of Western New York\, which inspired the young Roger Tory Peterson. Artists may create works at various locations within the area\, with suggested locations provided two weeks before the festival. \nFollowing three days of creating artworks en plein air\, artists are invited to display their completed artworks at the “Wet Paint” show and sale on Saturday\, September 19. All artworks submitted to the show will be entered into a judged plein air art competition\, with awards announced during the closing reception on Saturday\, September 19\, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. All works submitted to the show will also be considered for an exhibition of plein air artworks at RTPI\, to be held in the Fall of 2026 through Spring of 2027. \nPrize money will be awarded for 1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd place. \nPainters may paint anywhere in Chautauqua County; however\, RTPI will provide a list of suggested locations to choose from.
