DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, April 25th\, for an in-person gallery talk and drypoint demonstration by 2025 Artist-in-Residence Jennifer Anderson! Last year\, Anderson spent a week at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute and focused on bird portraiture as a way of seeing – and honoring – the California Condor and the American Kestrel. The portraits ask the viewer to linger: to meet a gaze\, to sense personality\, and to acknowledge the dignity of a living being. \nAnderson will speak on her residency and artworks\, as well as give a live demonstration on how she created her drypoint etchings. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the opening of our first major exhibition of 2026\, Art that Matters to the Planet: Beyond Beauty. \nArt that Matters to the Planet explores the ways in which art and artists matter – by drawing us into a deeper relationship with nature\, opening hearts and minds to the critical challenges of our time\, and inspiring us to the solutions we need to address those challenges. \nEach year\, the theme for this exhibition draws inspiration from the work of Roger Tory Peterson\, typically his series of field guides. Our 2026 theme\, inspired by A Field Guide to Wildflowers\, is titled Art that Matters to the Planet: Beyond Beauty. This exhibition focuses on flowering plants across the country and what they can teach us through the dual lenses of science and art. More than just a pretty face (Stamen? Pistil? Calyx?)\, flowers play vital roles ecologically\, biologically\, culturally\, and spiritually. \nGuest juror Heeyoung Kim will be in attendance. Kim is a wildflower painter who contributes to public awareness about native plants and nature conservation. She is also the first living artist to be represented by the renowned natural history art gallery\, Joel Oppenheimer Gallery\, in downtown Chicago. \nYour ticket includes full access to the museum\, charcuterie\, and live music by Jade Giambrone. The Spark Bird Project also helps birders better understand each other by sharing spark bird stories publicly at https://www.spark-bird.org/stories and through The Spark Bird Podcast. \nAbout the Host \nJenn Lodi-Smith\, Ph.D.\, the founder and director of The Spark Bird Project\, is a Professor of Psychology at Canisius University and scholar-in-residence with the Roger Tory Peterson Institute. Jenn has been using mixed methods to longitudinally study identity development for over 20 years\, most recently in the context of the transformative power of spark bird experiences. She serves as secretary/treasurer for the Association for Research in Personality\, associate editor of the Journal of Personality\, on the board of Birds on the Niagara\, and mentors the WNY Young Birders Club.

DESCRIPTION:How often does a Scotsman living in the south of France visit western New York? \nNiall Benvie\, an exceptional environmental photographer and co-founder of the Meet Your Neighbours project\, will be joining us via Zoom on Saturday\, January 31\, at 12 pm (a 40-minute presentation followed by 10 minutes for questions/comments). Light refreshments will be available in the RTPI lobby. \nBenvie’s program will focus on his Environmental Impact Award-winning project now on display at RTPI\, Meet Your Neighbours: how the project got its start\, and an astonishing survey of images from the project that expands on the photographs displayed in the museum. Meet Your Neighbours uses portraiture photography intended to take the viewer’s breath away. Each subject is photographed in the field\, against a white background brought onto the scene. This technique not only shows the subject in great detail\, but reveals their translucent qualities too. Each subject becomes a celebrity\, an individual. \nFounded in 2009\, Meet Your Neighbours is a worldwide photographic initiative created by Niall Benvie and Clay Bolt. The project reconnects people with the wildlife on their own doorsteps. These creatures and plants are vital: they represent the first\, and for some\, the only contact with wild nature we have. Yet too often they are overlooked\, undervalued. This is conservation photography at the grass-roots level\, asking people to care about where they live and showing them how extraordinary it is in a novel way.

His first love has always been the natural world – and image making. Benvie has been at the center of several of the largest outdoor photography initiatives of the last 15 years\, including Wild Wonders of Europe\, Meet Your Neighbours\, and 2020VISION. He was a Founding Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers and has published seven books and hundreds of articles. DESCRIPTION:In 1953\, birding guru Roger Tory Peterson and noted British naturalist James Fisher set out on what became a legendary journey – a 100-day trek over 30\,000 miles around North America. They traveled from Newfoundland to Florida\, deep into the heart of Mexico\, through the Southwest\, the Pacific Northwest\, and into Alaska’s Pribilof Islands. Two years later\, Wild America\, their classic account of the trip\, was published. \nOn the eve of that book’s fiftieth anniversary\, naturalist Scott Weidensaul retraces Peterson and Fisher’s steps to tell the story of wild America today. How has the continent’s natural landscape changed over the past fifty years? How have the wildlife\, the rivers\, and the rugged\, untouched terrain fared? \nLed by RTPI Scholar-in-Residence\, Jenn Lodi-Smith\, founder and director of The Spark Bird Project (www.spark-bird.org)\, as well as authors Kenn Kaufman and Scott Weidensaul. In the Tongass National Forest in the Alaska panhandle\, Gulick often tells her audience about the salmon in the trees. \nSalmon in the trees? Yes. \nPlease join us virtually on Friday\, November 21\, 2025\, for a Zoom program based on one of the Environmental Impact Award-winning projects now on display at RTPI\, The Salmon Way. Attendees will have the chance to hear award-winning photographer Amy Gulick discuss her project and breathtaking images. \nIn her research\, Gulick discovered how many communities (human\, bear\, and others) build their lives around local salmon populations. Without the salmon\, Tongass National Forest would be a very different place. \nGulick did not stop at the publication of her book\, The Salmon Way\, understanding that the most amazing photos don’t spark change unless people see them. Her photographs have been used in public presentations and workshops\, and to make points to land management and legislation authorities on why the Tongass National Forest should be protected. The photographs serve as a means of influence; a teaching and advocacy tool. This is the major goal of her work: to help people understand why we should care\, and what we can all be doing. \nAmy Gulick is a photographer\, author\, and public speaker. She is the recipient of multiple awards from conservation and travel foundations\, and her images and stories have been featured in the Smithsonian\, Audubon\, National Wildlife\, Sierra\, and Outdoor Photographer. Gulick is a founding Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers\, a Fellow of the International League of Conservation Writers\, and a senior Fellow of The Safina Center. As a resident of Whidbey Island\, in the Salish Sea of Washington state\, Gulick has spent extensive time exploring the northwest coast and Alaska.

DESCRIPTION:This program is FREE\, but registration is encouragedClick the link to register \nHave you ever taken time to observe the tiny frog sitting in your drain pipe\, or chat with the caterpillars slowly chewing away at the leaves on your tree? \nPlease join us on Saturday\, November 8\, 2025\, for an in-person program based on one of the Environmental Impact Award-winning projects now on display at RTPI\, Meet Your Neighbours. Attendees will have the chance to hear Twan Leenders\, a major contributor to the project and currently Director of Conservation at the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy\, give a talk on his photography and contributions to the project. \nMeet Your Neighbours uses portraiture photography intended to take the viewer’s breath away. Each subject is photographed in the field\, against a white background. This technique not only shows the subject in great detail but reveals their translucent qualities too. Each subject becomes a celebrity\, an individual. \nFounded in 2009\, Meet Your Neighbours is a worldwide photographic initiative created by Niall Benvie and Clay Bolt. The project reconnects people with the wildlife on their own doorsteps. These creatures and plants are vital: they represent the first\, and for some\, the only contact with wild nature we have. Yet too often they are overlooked\, undervalued. This is conservation photography at the grass-roots level\, asking people to care about where they live and showing them how extraordinary it is in a novel way.

DESCRIPTION:Reception is FREE to members of RTPI and Members of the Seneca NationCost is normal museum admission for non-membersClick the link to registerAttendPlease join us on Friday\, November 7\, for a reception for Dennis Bowen’s Artist-in-Residence exhibition\, Polishing the Chain. Attendees will have the chance to hear Bowen give a short talk on his residency and created work\, as well as view the artworks on display in conversation with Roger Tory Peterson’s field guide plates from the 1940s-1980s. Light snacks as well as tea\, coffee\, and juice will be served. \nIn the autumn of 2024\, Dennis Bowen spent a week as Artist-in-Residence at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute. With funding support from the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo\, RTPI has expanded its Artist-in-Residence program to include indigenous artists. In partnership with the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum\, Denis Bowen was selected to spend a week at RTPI\, where he studied Roger Tory Peterson’s personal library collection\, as well as many of his watercolor and gouache works of birds. For his exhibition\, Bowen chose to focus on the Haudenosaunee family clan system as well as Haudenosaunee cultural\, seasonal\, and sustaining relationships with birds. The Peterson Preserve and our museum are located within the traditional territories of the Haudenosaunee. \nDennis Bowen is a Haudenosaunee artist with a background in human services\, counseling\, elementary education\, and commercial illustration. He previously served as President of the Seneca Nation\, during which time he testified to the Climate Committee of the United Nations about water protection and safety on behalf of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Bowen also served on the board of directors for the SEVA Foundation\, a global nonprofit eye care organization developing self-sustaining programs that preserve and restore sight. SEVA provides critical eye care services to underserved communities— especially women\, children\, and Indigenous peoples. Dennis served on the SEVA Board from 2000 to 2006. \nPolishing the Chain is proudly sponsored by The Community Foundation of Greater Buffalo.

SUMMARY:Book Discussion: Looking for the Wild by Lyn Hancock
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the third book of our Wild America book club series\, featuring Looking for the Wild by Lyn Hancock. \nFor 100 days in 1953\, ornithologist Roger Tory Peterson and naturalist James Fisher traveled 30\,000 miles looking for Wild America. This inspired Australian naturalist and author Lyn Hancock and her colleagues to travel the same North American route\, noting changes in the various landscapes and their inhabitants. While noting the loss of wildness in some areas\, she was encouraged by the fact that much is still quite wild\, though it is now a managed wild. The growth of a grassroots conservationist movement has pressured governments at all levels to provide parks and sanctuaries to protect wildlife from encroachment. Moreover\, the spirit of cooperation among different interest groups has brought more balanced conservation decisions. \nLed by RTPI Scholar-in-Residence\, Jenn Lodi-Smith\, founder and director of The Spark Bird Project (www.spark-bird.org)\, as well as authors Kenn Kaufman and Scott Weidensaul. This continuation of our four-part program is part of this year’s first main-floor exhibition\, Art that Matters to the Planet: Wild America\, which celebrated the 70th anniversary of this classic in environmental literature. \nThese sessions will be held via Zoom. One book per session. Read each book in advance (or as much as you can.) Jenn will lead the discussion for each book. Bring your questions\, your insights\, and your curiosity for a fun and lively discussion.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Saturday\, September 13th\, for the closing reception\, awards ceremony\, and wet paint sale for the annual Chautauqua en Plein Air Festival. Attendees will have the chance to meet the artists\, as well as view and/or purchase artworks painted at various locations throughout the county. Hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will be offered. \nThe public “wet paint” art show and sale starts at 12 pm the same day\, if guests wish to view the artwork beforehand. Winners of the festival\, judged by Pittsburgh artist Ron Donoughe\, will be announced during the closing reception. DESCRIPTION:The Roger Tory Peterson Institute in Jamestown\, New York is a living embodiment of the Peterson Field Guide. It is a gateway to the natural area wonders that inspired Roger Tory Peterson to his career as one of the world’s premier artist-naturalists and international ambassador for the protection of nature. With a 27-acre nature preserve of wildflower gardens\, pollinator meadows\, and mature stands of hemlock trees\, the Peterson Preserve is a sanctuary for visitors. To celebrate this and other natural areas in Chautauqua County\, RTPI is thrilled to announce our fourth annual Plein Air Festival. \nThe Roger Tory Peterson Institute Plein Air Festival is a three-day\, open enrollment plein air event in Chautauqua County\, New York. Artists will have the opportunity to discover the beautiful natural scenery of Western New York which inspired the young Roger Tory Peterson. Artists may create works at a variety of locations within the area\, with suggested locations provided two weeks prior to the festival. \nFollowing three days of creating artworks en plein air\, artists are invited to display their completed artworks at the “Wet Paint” show and sale on Saturday\, September 13. All artworks submitted to the show will be entered into a judged plein air art competition\, with awards announced during the closing reception on Saturday\, September 13 from 5-7 pm. All works submitted to the show will also be considered for an exhibition of plein air artworks at RTPI\, to be held in the Fall of 2025 through Spring of 2026. \n\nRegistration Fee: $65 – RTPI members receive a 10% discount on registration.\nRegistration is limited to the first 50 artists.\nRegistration is non-refundable and non-transferable.\nMaximum canvas size 18″x24″ either landscape or portrait orientation.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the opening of our newest exhibition\, Knowing Where to Stand: NANPA Environmental Impact Award Winners. \nThe title of this exhibition comes from renowned American landscape photographer and environmentalist Ansel Adams: “A good photograph is knowing where to stand.” Through their photographs\, the Environmental Impact Award winners display both their prowess behind a lens and their stance on critical environmental issues. \nAwarded by the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA)\, the Environmental Impact Award honors projects that directly address critical environmental problems. In addition to beautiful images\, the winning project includes components that enhance public awareness\, including materials created to influence decision-makers. The photographs in this exhibition pose questions and answers through a medium that is breathtaking and sharp. They are a shining example of Art that Matters to the Planet. \nYour ticket includes full access to the museum\, along with a drink from the RTPI bar\, light bites\, and live music.
