SUMMARY:Mary Ellen Humphrey Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Corresponding With Marcia\, The American Revolution and Other Topics \n“My interest in the revolution stems from my ancestor\, Mercy Otis Warren\, who wrote the book\, History of the Rise\, Progress and Termination of the American Revolution published in 1805. \nShe inspired the Boston Tea Party with her popular and widely published poem\, Squabble of the Sea Nymphs. Did you wonder why they dressed as natives carrying clubs and tomahawks? It was inspired by her poem. We would say today that it went viral. \nShe wrote patriotic propaganda that was widely read in the colonies\, and she was intricately involved in the cause corresponding with many of the principals including John and Abigail Adams. Her home in Barnstable hosted many planning sessions for the revolution. Her brother James Otis was the Boston lawyer who wrote the arguments against the Writs of Assistance\, with the famous sentiment\, “no taxation without representation.” \nBoth she and her friend Martha Washington rode horseback to the army camp outside Boston to visit their husbands. Mercy’s husband was in charge of the finances\, and of course\, George was in charge of the army. \nPost revolution\, she wrote a widely read and popular pamphlet\, Observations on the New Constitution\, outlining objections to what many perceived would be a federal government that was too powerful and a threat to individual rights. It lists the same points as contained in the Bill of Rights. She wrote under a pseudonym to insure it would be taken seriously. It was. It encouraged the addition of the Bill of Rights to our constitution. \nWhen I retired here to NY a few years ago\, I was finally able to focus on my writing projects and this one is all the more urgent given it is the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. I am eager and excited to share Mercy’s story and her concerns about our new government\, and very timely today.”

SUMMARY:13 Walls Exhibition Space with Ivy Higganbotham - Coming Full Circle
DESCRIPTION:Ivy Higganbotham- \nAfter many years of never picking up a paintbrush other than to paint my walls\, I started painting during COVID. To cope with what was going on in the world and personal loss\, I began watching painting videos and said\, “I can do that”. With encouragement from Denise Stebbins at Living Glass Art Gallery\, I jumped back intopainting. I evolved from pretty watercolors to intuitive abstract\, and I’m currently exploring mixed media collage. \nMy goal in 2024 was to get unstuck. To break out! It was the year I would retire from work\, and also the year I had my first art exhibition at Living Glass Art Gallery. I opened myself up to judgment of my art abilities\, but I was ok with that because I was breaking out of a mold. I had succeeded in doing that\, and it motivated me even more to keep breaking down other barriers that keep us stuck. My art is an expression of me and what is happening in my life at the moment. Art brings me joy and peace. My mind takes a relaxing vacation from reality\, and hours pass by when I’m surrounded by my art supplies. This collage collection\, which I call “Coming Full Circle\,” is made from papers I’ve madeover the last two years and some small paintings that I felt were rejects until I meshed the two together. Exciting things happened! A mini collection was born. When looking at the whole collection\, I realized that circles are a recurring theme in many of my pieces. Circles symbolize unity\, harmony\, or peace\, wholeness\, completion\, and eternity. Creating evokes these feelings in me. Art = happiness.

SUMMARY:Joe Ulrich "Saboteurs Five: A WW2 Novel of Nazi Intrigue in America"
DESCRIPTION:In this historical novel\, Adolph Hitler sends a U-boat carrying saboteurs to destroy key targets in New York\, Ohio and Pennsylvania that support the war effort. Their destruction would also damage the morale of Americans who thus far have felt safe from the effects of the war in Europe. The book follows the adventures of five saboteurs landed on a New Jersey beach. Three were devoted Nazis. Two others lacked Nazi fever\, and dealt with major conflicts in their loyalty to the cause. The leader’s forbidden love affair with an American woman complicates their mission. Their illicit relationship eventually plays a major role in the book.Among targets considered for destruction included ships tied up at New York City piers\, a critical installation of the Pennsylvania Railroad\, an ore unloading facility in Cleveland\, and an important bridge. The saboteurs use cold-blooded killing\, courage\, knowledge\, and the art of seduction to attain their goals and avoid capture. A Nazi sympathizer in rural Northwest Pennsylvania assists by providing explosives for their mission.Meanwhile\, the FBI and NYPD scramble to track them down\, each seeking primary credit for their apprehension

SUMMARY:Octagon Gallery - The Works of Tom Makovitch
DESCRIPTION:Tom Makovitch is a sculptor based in Western New York whose practice investigates the architecture of belonging. His work navigates the hierarchies assigned to domestic rituals and environmental remnants\, seeking a “handshake with the landscape” through site-specific mold-making and performative labor. By exploring the tension between familial ancestry and the reclamation of identity\, Makovitch transforms ephemeral imprints into a lasting sculptural record of Anewed Permanence. \nHis professional practice is centered on the cultural archaeology of the region\, with current research focused on expanding his site-specific surveys and performative installations within Western New York. \nSHORT STATEMENTBetween the discarded imprints of the landscape and the permanence of everyday objects\, an investigation into the architecture of belonging unfolds. This practice navigates the hierarchies assigned to items\, places\, and fleeting moments to seek a sense of Anewed Permanence. Through the pairing of undoctored materials and vibrantly masked by resin casts and paint\, the work explores the tension between objects and the reclamation of identity. It ultimately questions how the physical remnants we leave behind anchor us to the world.

SUMMARY:Octagon Gallery - "An Otherworldly Exhibit" with John Rice
DESCRIPTION:Beyond Words: An Otherworldly Exhibit \nJohn A. Rice is an award-winning actor\, writer\, and artist specializing in oil pastels. As one of the few artists working professionally in this medium\, his work has sold in more than 35 countries worldwide. He runs his art shop\, J.A.R. Studio\, NYC\, out of his workspace in Astoria\, NY. \nA skilled Tarot reader\, John created the popular Mindscapes Tarot featuring his signature landscape style (Hay House/Penguin Random House). Additionally\, his hauntingly beautiful illustrated A Christmas Carol and October Shadows: Classic Ghost Stories of Halloween are now available as collectible editions (Abbeville Press). His unique immersive exhibit Beyond Words\, created in collaboration with psychic mediums from historic Lily Dale\, is currently exhibiting. \nIn April 2023\, I was an artist-in-residence in Lily Dale\, NY\, the world’s oldest and largest Spiritualist community. I brought a collection of handwritten personal questions from my audience and collaborated with the town’s psychic mediums to channel answers from beyond our world. This guidance was then reinterpreted by me into the series of artworks you are about to see.The best part? I recorded our sessions\, and now you can listen to the medium speak in their own words when you click the audio track next to each artwork. I hope this multimedia journey brings you clarity\, insight\, and peace of mind in these uncertain times. \nThis project was made possible by the Normalize Talking to the Dead artist residency at Lily Dale.
