DESCRIPTION:This year\, in observation of World Refugee Day\, New Neighbors Coalition will host an Evening with Rumi on Thursday\, June 18th at 6pm in the St. Luke’s Undercroft. \nThis community gathering will reflect on and explore some of the 13th-century poet’s most influential work. We will focus primarily on the first story of Rumi’s Masnavi\, Book I\, using the Nicholson translation\, as well as a couple of his shorter poems. \nRumi’s words have traveled across borders and through generations\, speaking to feelings of longing and connection for millions of people across cultures and languages. \nThis intimate conversation will explore themes of resilience and belonging\, while recognizing that the experience of displacement\, and the search for home\, is one that has shaped human history for centuries. \nA translated PDF of the first story from the Masnavi\, and one of Rumi’s shorter poems from Divan-e Shams can be found for anyone interested in reading them ahead of the event here: https://stlukesjamestown.sharepoint.com/…/event-home… \nNo preparation or prior reading is needed. DESCRIPTION:Join the New Neighbors Coalition for a community celebration of Nowruz on Monday\, March 23rd in the St. Luke’s Undercroft. This festival marks the start of the new year on the Solar Hijri calendar\, used by many Central and West Asian ethnic groups\, coinciding with the Northern Hemisphere’s spring equinox. Though Nowruz is observed in many places worldwide\, the holiday is predominantly traditional of the people of Afghanistan\, Azerbaijan\, India\, Iran\, Iraq\, Kazakhstan\, Kyrgyzstan\, Mongolia\, Pakistan\, Tajikistan\, Turkey\, Turkmenistan\, and Uzbekistan. \nThe festivities will include age-appropriate activities\, music\, some Nowruz bites\, and an opportunity to learn some new ways celebrate the new year. This is a family-friendly event\, and kids are highly encouraged to join! \nDonations of $5-10 suggested to help offset cost of the event. Together\, we will review how misinformation can spread quickly during uncertain moments\, how rumors can unintentionally cause fear or harm\, and what well-meaning community members should do instead. \nWe will touch on the fact that all community members share a responsibility to verify information before passing it along\, especially when that information could impact people’s safety or sense of security. Attendees will learn how to pause\, confirm information through trusted sources\, ask follow-up questions upon receiving information\, and approach social media posts with an analytical eye to avoid repeating unverified or piecemeal reports. The training will focus on staying grounded in accurate information\, communicating with care\, and supporting trust and safety over spreading rumors.
