SUMMARY:On-Water Classroom | Aquatic Invasive Species @ Long Point
DESCRIPTION:Join Everwild staff at Long Point State Park and learn how to identify\, monitor\, survey\, and remove aquatic invasive species (AIS) found in and around Chautauqua Lake. \nChautauqua Lake supports a wide variety of aquatic plants. The lake’s underwater flora includes rare\, threatened species as well as a variety of common plants that provide essential habitat for fish and other animals and aid in maintaining water quality. However\, it also includes several non-native invasive species that can cause challenges for the lake’s ecology\, limit recreational activities\, and impact the local economy. \nTo address this\, Everwild Land Trust runs an AIS Early Detection program each summer. Trained staff and dedicated volunteers monitor the lake\, survey for invasive species\, and remove them when found. Regular on-water classroom sessions are offered to train new volunteers in identifying target species and report sightings through iMapInvasives\, helping us increase awareness and improve coverage throughout the busy summer season.Multiple sessions are planned for the summer. Each session will be hosted at a different location. You are welcome to register for as many sessions as you’d like to learn and assist with AIS monitoring and removal. \nIntended Audience: Adults \nPrice: Free \nRegistration: Registration is required due to the highly weather dependent nature of these surveys. Registration will close the day before each event. \nSpecial Notes:Be sure to check your email prior to the event for any urgent updates.Participants must provide their own kayak or canoe and life jacket. Please bring anything you may need to stay safe and comfortable on the water. We recommend sun screen\, insect repellent\, water shoes\, a bottle of water\, and a snack.

SUMMARY:Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Survey - RTPI and JCC
DESCRIPTION:You Can Help Save Native Trees! \n\nEvery winter\, we conduct Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) surveys across the region. You can help survey hemlock trees at the Cassadaga Lakes Nature Park preserve on February 21\, or Roger Tory Peterson Institute and SUNY JCC on March 7 for the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid.\nTo volunteer\, please visit chautauquawatershed.org/events and RSVP for either survey.\nHWA is most visible in winter. In the coldest months\, the aphids go dormant and form cotton-like protective balls at the bases of hemlock needles\, making it easy to observe and diagnose. This dormant period also makes it much less likely for surveyors to accidentally spread HWA from tree to tree by physically touching multiple hemlocks in an area during a survey.\n\nBy surveying local hemlock trees and reporting any HWA we observe on them\, we can help with the implementation of targeted treatment plans to manage the infestations and prevent further spread.
