DESCRIPTION:First Friday (Adult+)\nAll About Hellbenders with Kelly Crandall \nFriday\, February 6\, 2026\n11:00 a.m. – Noon \n$8 Adults; $6 Nature Center members\n$6 Children 9 – 15 \nReservations appreciated\, walk-ins welcome. \n  \nJoin Kelly Crandall\, a wildlife biologist with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation\, as she shines a light on one of the most cryptic and misunderstood species in New York State\, the Eastern Hellbender. \nHellbenders go by many names\, including Allegheny alligators\, snot otters\, and lasagna lizards. There are just as many questions about Hellbenders as there are names. What’s the difference between a mudpuppy and a hellbender? Are hellbenders venomous? These are some of the questions that Kelly will be answering as she talks about the life history of these salamanders\, their population status in the region and across North America\, and how we can all be better neighbors to our local streams. \nAbout the speaker: Kelly Crandall is a Chautauqua County native. After graduating from Cornell University with a degree in Animal Science in 2018\, Kelly worked as a wildlife technician on a variety of projects\, including Ocelot conservation in Texas\, Burmese Python management in the Florida Everglades\, Wild Turkey research in Missouri\, and Steelhead Creel surveys in Dunkirk for the DEC. Kelly received her Master’s Degree in Forestry from Southern Illinois University where she studied the effects of human development on the movement of mesopredators in the Florida Keys and related that to parasite transmission. Kelly now works for the NYSDEC as a Regional Wildlife Biologist where she focuses on freshwater mussels and rare & endangered species of the Allegheny Watershed. \n  \nSpecial Information: If you’d like to bring a packed lunch\, you can visit attendees and the speaker after the program.

DESCRIPTION:First Friday (Adult+)\nThe Birds of Southern France with Charlotte Schmaltz \nFriday\, January 2\, 2026\n11:00 a.m. – Noon \n$8 Adults; $6 Nature Center members\n$6 Children 9 – 15 \nReservations appreciated\, walk-ins welcome. \nJoin Nature Educator Charlotte Schmaltz as she shares her week-long exploration of the birds and nature of Southern France. \nCharlotte recently traveled to Southern France and recorded the birds she witnessed. This included spending an entire day at the Camargue Regional National Park\, a wetland wildlife preserve with an ornithological park. Whether it was listening to birdsong during morning walks to the local patisserie or spending several hours outside with a camera and binoculars\, there were many species to be seen and heard. While some birds are like those found here in Western New York\, others are completely unexpected and new. Charlotte will share photos and audio recordings of birds and stories of nature and her experiences traveling. \nCharlotte is a Nature Educator and Animal Care Specialist at Audubon Community Nature Center. She is also an avid birder and enjoys wildlife photography. Since moving to Jamestown in January 2025\, she has enjoyed learning about the nature and ecology of the region. So far\, her favorite trails are the ones at ACNC and the ones maintained by the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy. Attend a live animal program\, explore animal artifacts\, be creative at the craft station\, make a gift for the wild animals\, and more. \nACNC is home to many live animals including several species of turtles\, snakes\, and amphibians. Three birds of prey also call ACNC home\, including an American Kestrel and two Red-tailed Hawks. These animals are a critical part of the education team as they teach visitors about wildlife in our area and how they move\, grow\, and survive. \nChoose one session to attend. Each session will begin with a live animal presentation\, followed by time to explore the building and grounds or participate in another craft or activity. \nVisit with and learn about animals\, including Lincoln the box turtle\, at Christmas with the Critters on December 29.

Chipmunks and mice tunnel under blankets of snow\, frogs and otters either sleep or search for food under the icy ponds\, and predators use their senses to find prey through these frozen layers. Investigate this snowy world under your feet by examining clues and identifying evidence of animals. \nAfter a short indoor lesson\, take those winter detective skills outdoors to search for evidence of those winter inhabitants\, including holes\, trails\, and food. A snack is provided after the hike and a craft is offered if there is time. \nLook for animal tracks and holes on the frozen ground and snow. Learn more about the winter lives of animals under the snow and ice at ACNC’s Little Explorers on December 13.
