This is a family-friendly event with something for all ages and abilities. To register ahead of time\, call the Nature Center at (716) 569-2345\, or go online at auduboncnc.org/programs. Even though the program is free\, please click through check-out to complete your registration. Walk-ins the morning of the event are welcome. \nRegistration takes place from 9:00 – 9:15 a.m. Work parties tackle their jobs between 9:30 a.m. and noon. After all the hard work\, you can stick around and celebrate the accomplishments with lunch. These ponds and streams are important habitats for many aquatic mammals. \nAfter a short hands-on lesson indoors exploring the behaviors\, diets\, and habits of western NY’s wetland mammals\, head outside to search along the pond edges and look for beaver chews\, otter tracks\, and muskrat slides. \nA snack is provided after the hike and a craft is offered if there is time. \nSpecial Information: This program takes place rain or shine\, please dress for the weather. \nClues like beaver chews on trees and logs are an important sign that beavers are in the area\, even if the animal itself is hiding. Pack a lunch and snacks that don’t need refrigeration and a water bottle. \nSpecial Information: Pack extras of all clothing and outerwear as kids will get wet and possibly muddy. DESCRIPTION:Audubon Lights (All) \n$12 Adults; $9 Nature Center members\n$9 Children 3 – 15; free 2 and under \nReservations appreciated\, walk-ins welcome. \nAudubon lights up the early spring with a half-mile long trail of lights after sunset. Walk a luminary-lit trail past ponds that reflect the illuminated trees and stars above. Creative light displays\, animal silhouettes\, and more highlight natural features in new ways. The lights help highlight and celebrate the seasonal change from winter to spring and Spring Peepers provide the perfect soundtrack to this nighttime nature walk. While luminaries light the trail edges\, some sections are darker than others so a flashlight may be helpful. \nThe trail ends at the Nature Center with a warm fire\, hot drinks\, and snacks for sale\, as well as live entertainment. The Nature Center building will be open during the event so you can play in the indoor nature play area\, visit the live animals\, or shop in the Blue Heron Gift Shop. Entertainment may move inside during inclement weather. \nPurchase LED light trinkets at the entrance for additional fun (and to help locate children in the dark). Bring cash to make purchasing easier. \nSpecial Information: Please bring a flashlight as a backup in case you need it on dark sections of the trail. Parking lots have lights\, but there will be an un-lit overflow parking lot used on crowded nights. Food and other goods for sale are easiest to purchase with cash\, so please bring cash for small purchases. The Nature Center building will not re-open for Audubon Lights until a half an hour before the event start. \nEnjoy a luminary-lit trail of lights at Audubon Lights on weekends from March 20 through April 4.

DESCRIPTION:First Friday (Adult+)\nRaptor Migration at the Ripley Hawk Watch with Devin Banning \nFriday\, April 3\, 2026\n11:00 a.m. – Noon \n$8 Adults; $6 Nature Center members\n$6 Children 9 – 15 \nReservations appreciated\, walk-ins welcome. \nJoin Devin Banning to learn more about raptor migration and the Ripley Hawk Watch. \nEvery spring from March 15 to May 15\, volunteers join the Ripley Hawk Watch to witness and document the spectacle of raptor and passerine migration. Each season an average of 15\,000 – 20\,000 raptors pass over the site. The watch is uniquely situated on a busy flyway for bird\, bat\, and butterfly migration. Documenting the seasonal movements of these organisms provides important data to help scientists and others understand the natural world. \nAbout the speaker: Devin Banning is a recent graduate of SUNY Fredonia. He currently works as a Music Teacher at Alden High School. Though his career choice is in music\, he is an avid birder and amateur naturalist. Devin is a co-founder of the Chautauqua-Warren Birding Association (CWBA)\, one of the coordinators of the Ripley Hawk Watch\, and frequently leads programs and birding outings with Katelyn Davis for the CWBA and Buffalo Ornithological Society. \nSpecial Information: If you’d like to bring a packed lunch\, you can visit attendees and the speaker after the program. \nJoin Devin Banning at 11:00 a.m. on April 3 to learn about raptor migration and Ripley Hawk Watch at Audubon’s First Friday program.

After a short hands-on lesson indoors exploring how animals use different types of camouflage\, head outside to look for signs of those animals and test your own camouflage skills in the forests and fields. \nA snack is provided after the hike and a craft is offered if there is time. \nSpecial Information: This program takes place rain or shine\, please dress for the weather \nSome animals\, like Katydids\, camouflage by mimicking leaves or other plant parts. Join Scott Stoleson\, as he shares photos and stories of a family adventure to the savannahs of Tanzania. \nTanzania has won numerous awards and accolades as a world-class ecotourism destination\, including World’s Best National Park for the Serengeti. In 2024\, Scott and family took a two-week safari in four of the National Parks in northern Tanzania\, and discovered those awards were very well deserved. Join him as he shares photos of the region’s amazing and abundant wildlife including elephants\, lions\, zebras\, antelope\, crocodiles\, and a host of birds. His trip included a visit to a traditional Maasai village. \nAbout the speaker: Scott Stoleson recently retired as a Research Ecologist from the U.S. Forest Service’s Northern Research Station in Warren\, PA. He is also a Research Adjunct Professor at West Virginia University. His research focused on the ecology and conservation of Pennsylvania’s forest birds. Previously Scott studied avian ecology in the western USA and Central and South America. He has authored over 85 peer-reviewed scientific papers and book chapters. Scott holds degrees in biology and ecology from Dartmouth College and Yale University. He currently serves on the Governing Council of the Association of Field Ornithologists\, the Pennsylvania Ornithological Records Committee\, the PA Biological Survey’s Ornithological Technical Committee and Mycological Technical Committee\, and as Regional Coordinator of the 3rd PA Bird Atlas for northwestern PA. DESCRIPTION:First Friday (Adult+)\nAll About Hellbenders with Kelly Crandall \nFriday\, February 6\, 2026\n11:00 a.m. – Noon \n$8 Adults; $6 Nature Center members\n$6 Children 9 – 15 \nReservations appreciated\, walk-ins welcome. \n  \nJoin Kelly Crandall\, a wildlife biologist with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation\, as she shines a light on one of the most cryptic and misunderstood species in New York State\, the Eastern Hellbender. \nHellbenders go by many names\, including Allegheny alligators\, snot otters\, and lasagna lizards. There are just as many questions about Hellbenders as there are names. What’s the difference between a mudpuppy and a hellbender? Are hellbenders venomous? These are some of the questions that Kelly will be answering as she talks about the life history of these salamanders\, their population status in the region and across North America\, and how we can all be better neighbors to our local streams. \nAbout the speaker: Kelly Crandall is a Chautauqua County native. After graduating from Cornell University with a degree in Animal Science in 2018\, Kelly worked as a wildlife technician on a variety of projects\, including Ocelot conservation in Texas\, Burmese Python management in the Florida Everglades\, Wild Turkey research in Missouri\, and Steelhead Creel surveys in Dunkirk for the DEC. Kelly received her Master’s Degree in Forestry from Southern Illinois University where she studied the effects of human development on the movement of mesopredators in the Florida Keys and related that to parasite transmission. Kelly now works for the NYSDEC as a Regional Wildlife Biologist where she focuses on freshwater mussels and rare & endangered species of the Allegheny Watershed. \n  \nSpecial Information: If you’d like to bring a packed lunch\, you can visit attendees and the speaker after the program.

DESCRIPTION:First Friday (Adult+)\nThe Birds of Southern France with Charlotte Schmaltz \nFriday\, January 2\, 2026\n11:00 a.m. – Noon \n$8 Adults; $6 Nature Center members\n$6 Children 9 – 15 \nReservations appreciated\, walk-ins welcome. \nJoin Nature Educator Charlotte Schmaltz as she shares her week-long exploration of the birds and nature of Southern France. \nCharlotte recently traveled to Southern France and recorded the birds she witnessed. This included spending an entire day at the Camargue Regional National Park\, a wetland wildlife preserve with an ornithological park. Whether it was listening to birdsong during morning walks to the local patisserie or spending several hours outside with a camera and binoculars\, there were many species to be seen and heard. While some birds are like those found here in Western New York\, others are completely unexpected and new. Charlotte will share photos and audio recordings of birds and stories of nature and her experiences traveling. \nCharlotte is a Nature Educator and Animal Care Specialist at Audubon Community Nature Center. She is also an avid birder and enjoys wildlife photography. Since moving to Jamestown in January 2025\, she has enjoyed learning about the nature and ecology of the region. So far\, her favorite trails are the ones at ACNC and the ones maintained by the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy. Three birds of prey also call ACNC home\, including an American Kestrel and two Red-tailed Hawks. These animals are a critical part of the education team as they teach visitors about wildlife in our area and how they move\, grow\, and survive. \nChoose one session to attend. Chipmunks and mice tunnel under blankets of snow\, frogs and otters either sleep or search for food under the icy ponds\, and predators use their senses to find prey through these frozen layers. Investigate this snowy world under your feet by examining clues and identifying evidence of animals. \nAfter a short indoor lesson\, take those winter detective skills outdoors to search for evidence of those winter inhabitants\, including holes\, trails\, and food. Walk-ins accepted if room. \nOn the first Sunday of each month\, bring your little ones for a free\, nature-based story time at Audubon. \nChildren’s books are powerful tools to connect children to nature and establish a strong foundation for their educational journey. Join Claire Certo on the first Sunday of the month for a half-hour story time. Children will go on literary adventures with animals\, through habitats and seasons\, and discover new things with every page each month. \nThis program is free and so is Sunday admission. Come for story time and stay to explore the indoor Nature Play Area\, live animals\, and exhibits. \nSpecial Information: Doors open at 12:20 p.m. with story time beginning at 12:30 p.m. The building will fully open at 1:00 p.m. \nJoin story teller Claire Certo for free First Sunday Storytime at 12:30 p.m. at Audubon Community Nature Center on December 7.
