Biologist Twan Leenders has lived and explored in some pretty exotic places\, and in this program he invites you to join him on a journey through the many “backyards” he has encountered along the way\, all seen through the lens of his camera. \nFrom tropical birds\, frogs\, snakes\, and spectacular plants to the fascinating wildlife found right here at home\, each photograph reveals a story of natural wonder. Come take a closer look at the wild world around us—and discover that you don’t have to travel far to find something extraordinary. \nAbout the speaker: Twan is a biologist from the Netherlands with a doctoral degree in animal ecology and a lifelong commitment to conservation management. After moving to Western New York in 2012\, Twan worked at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History in Jamestown and now serves as Director of Conservation for Everwild Land Trust (the future of the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy). In this role\, he applies his expertise to our region\, working to identify and protect our most critical natural areas and species while developing collaborative\, landscape-level conservation efforts. He is also an avid photographer and published author and loves putting his photography to work in support of his professional interests.

SUMMARY:An Evening with the Bats

From the Little Brown Bat (Myotis lucifugus) to the endangered Northern Long-eared Bat (Myotis septentrionalis)\, these “hand-winged” heroes are some of nature’s most enigmatic mammals—and the ultimate pest control. \nJoin Audubon for An Evening With The Bats to learn about bats in this region and at ACNC\, threats to bats in New York and around the world\, and how you can contribute to bat conservation in your backyard. After the sun sets\, the event will move outside for a bat walk along Audubon’s trails to look for bats and identify them using a mobile acoustic monitor. The lecture portion will feature presentations by Dr. Jonathan Townsend\, ACNC Executive Director Aaron Sidder\, and SUNY Fredonia bat researcher Allison Tilburg. \nDr. Jonathan Townsend is a bat biologist from the Fredonia area. He works full-time with Environmental Design and Research\, a consulting firm\, and co-owns Royal Fern Nursery with his wife\, Jessica. Jonathan is also a volunteer Executive Director for Buffalo Bat Habitat\, a nonprofit dedicated to bat habitat conservation and restoration in Western New York. \nAaron Sidder is the Executive Director of Audubon Community Nature Center. Before joining ACNC\, Aaron served as Ecology & Compliance Coordinator at Bat Conservation International\, where he coordinated multi-agency bat habitat restoration projects around the western U.S. \nAlison Tilburg is a Jamestown native currently working on her master’s degree in biology at SUNY Fredonia. Her research is focused on bat behavior and communication. \nSpecial Information: Come prepared to be outside after dark. Flashlights are recommended.  \nExecutive Director Aaron Sidder holds a California myotis during White-nose Syndrome sampling in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area\, Utah. Adults and children alike are encouraged to wear their favorite costumes. \nVisitors can try their hand at kid-safe archery\, make a wizard staff\, take a horse-drawn wagon ride\, listen to a storyteller\, make a wish on the wishing tree\, hunt for garden gnomes\, and more fun activities. Watch how they capture migrating and resident birds\, fit them with identification bands\, measure\, weigh\, and then release them. \nBird banding is an established technique used to discover details about the behaviors of birds. You can drop in any time between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. to learn from the ornithologists exactly how it is done and why. If weather is too harsh for the safety of the birds\, the nets are not opened and an alternate date is chosen. \nSpecial Information: This program is open-house style. If the weather is inclement\, the nets are not opened. No dogs. \nBird banding gives participants an up close look at birds and science in action. You may be a great addition to ACNC’s Trail Guide crew! \nTrail Guide volunteers are integral to educational programming at Audubon. These volunteers lead small groups of students on Discovery Walks using age-appropriate and exploration-based activities. This two-day training provides new and returning Trail Guide volunteers with the skills to effectively achieve the goal of a Discovery Walk\, which is to inspire and nurture curiosity about the natural world. Information and skills learned in this training may be useful in other volunteer positions at Audubon. \nTrail Guides lead school groups along Audubon trails during their school field trips. The students’ ages range from 4 to 12\, and group size is typically 8 – 12 students. In this training\, you’ll learn some exploration activities\, pick up tips for group management\, and go through the basic outline of how to effectively walk the children through the discovery process as they move along the trails. After this training\, you will have opportunities to observe walks and apply some of the learned skills in preparation to lead groups on your own. \nThis training is required for new Trail Guide volunteers. Established Trail Guides are welcome to come as a refresher course. ACNC’s annual Birdathon is a staff favorite because it combines birding with raising money for a cause! Each year\, teams of birders raise money to fund the Ryan Exline Memorial Scholarship and to provide ongoing care and habitat improvements for Audubon’s Animal Ambassadors. \nThe Ryan Exline Memorial Scholarship awards a $500 scholarship to a student pursuing a degree in an environmental-related field. Additional money raised beyond the scholarship funds will help cover annual expenses including visits to the vet\, food\, and other necessary items to keep Audubon’s animals healthy. These expenses include approximately $6\,500 annually. This year’s goal is to raise $2\,000 to fund this year’s scholarship and to offset some of the animal care expenses. \nYou can help in a variety of ways! \n\nFind a birding buddy and sign up as a team where people can pledge online to support your birding efforts. Birders can bird for 24 hours total from April 25 – May 3\, 2026. DESCRIPTION:Little Explorers (Children 3 – 8 with an adult)\nBeavers\, Muskrats\, and More! \nSaturday\, April 11\, 2026\n10:00 – 11:30 a.m. \n$12 Adults; $9 Nature Center members\n$9 Children 3 – 8 \nPaid reservations required by Thursday\, April 9\, 2026. \nLittle Explorers ages 3- 8 and their adults can join Audubon to learn more about the mammals that rely on ponds and their connecting waterways. \nSpend some time exploring these wetland spaces and you might see signs of beavers building dams\, otters catching food\, and muskrats swimming between the edge of the pond and their temporary lodges. These ponds and streams are important habitats for many aquatic mammals. \nAfter a short hands-on lesson indoors exploring the behaviors\, diets\, and habits of western NY’s wetland mammals\, head outside to search along the pond edges and look for beaver chews\, otter tracks\, and muskrat slides. \nA snack is provided after the hike and a craft is offered if there is time. \nSpecial Information: This program takes place rain or shine\, please dress for the weather. \nClues like beaver chews on trees and logs are an important sign that beavers are in the area\, even if the animal itself is hiding. Campers will adventure outdoors to find signs of spring\, search for emerging and migrating animals and plants\, and likely discover the importance of mud as the snow and ice melt and the world softens. \nChildren will go outside\, so please make sure they are dressed for the weather\, with extras of anything that might get wet (which means everything!). Pack a lunch and snacks that don’t need refrigeration and a water bottle. \nSpecial Information: Pack extras of all clothing and outerwear as kids will get wet and possibly muddy. Pack a lunch\, snacks\, and a water bottle. Make sure their name is on outwear and water bottles. \nChildren ages 4 – 12 can play\, explore\, and learn at one of the Mud Camps at Audubon on April 6.

SUMMARY:Audubon Lights!
DESCRIPTION:Audubon Lights (All) \n$12 Adults; $9 Nature Center members\n$9 Children 3 – 15; free 2 and under \nReservations appreciated\, walk-ins welcome. \nAudubon lights up the early spring with a half-mile long trail of lights after sunset. Walk a luminary-lit trail past ponds that reflect the illuminated trees and stars above. Creative light displays\, animal silhouettes\, and more highlight natural features in new ways. The lights help highlight and celebrate the seasonal change from winter to spring and Spring Peepers provide the perfect soundtrack to this nighttime nature walk. While luminaries light the trail edges\, some sections are darker than others so a flashlight may be helpful. \nThe trail ends at the Nature Center with a warm fire\, hot drinks\, and snacks for sale\, as well as live entertainment. The Nature Center building will be open during the event so you can play in the indoor nature play area\, visit the live animals\, or shop in the Blue Heron Gift Shop. Entertainment may move inside during inclement weather. \nPurchase LED light trinkets at the entrance for additional fun (and to help locate children in the dark). Bring cash to make purchasing easier. \nSpecial Information: Please bring a flashlight as a backup in case you need it on dark sections of the trail. Parking lots have lights\, but there will be an un-lit overflow parking lot used on crowded nights. Food and other goods for sale are easiest to purchase with cash\, so please bring cash for small purchases. The Nature Center building will not re-open for Audubon Lights until a half an hour before the event start. \nEnjoy a luminary-lit trail of lights at Audubon Lights on weekends from March 20 through April 4.
