SUMMARY:Global Perspectives Book Club - The Lion Women of Tehran
DESCRIPTION:Book: The Lion Women of TehranAuthor: Marjan KamaliGenre: Historical/literary fiction \nDescription (from Good Neighbor Bookstore webpage): \nNEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER \nFrom nationally bestselling author Marjan Kamali\, this perfect book club read is “evocative…and a powerful portrait of friendship\, feminism\, and political activism” (People) set against three transformative decades in Tehran\, Iran. \nIn 1950s Tehran\, seven-year-old Ellie lives in grand comfort until the untimely death of her father\, forcing Ellie and her mother to move to a tiny home downtown. Lonely and bearing the brunt of her mother’s endless grievances\, Ellie dreams for a friend to alleviate her isolation. \nLuckily\, on the first day of school\, she meets Homa\, a kind girl with a brave and irrepressible spirit. Together\, the two girls play games\, learn to cook in the stone kitchen of Homa’s warm home\, wander through the colorful stalls of the Grand Bazaar\, and share their ambitions of becoming “lion women.” \nBut their happiness is disrupted when Ellie and her mother are afforded the opportunity to return to their previous bourgeois life. Now a popular student at the best girls’ high school in Iran\, Ellie’s memories of Homa begin to fade. Years later\, however\, her sudden reappearance in Ellie’s privileged world alters the course of both of their lives. \nTogether\, the two young women come of age and pursue their own goals for meaningful futures. But as the political turmoil in Iran builds to a breaking point\, one earth-shattering betrayal will have enormous consequences. \n“Reminiscent of The Kite Runner and My Brilliant Friend\, The Lion Women of Tehran is a mesmerizing tale” (BookPage) of love and courage\, and a sweeping exploration of how profoundly we are shaped by those we meet when we are young. \nLink to purchase book locally through Good Neighbor Bookstore:https://goodneighborbooks.com/search?q=the%20lion%20women%20of%20tehran \nLink to RSVP via Microsoft Forms:https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/MA925MmrSG \nWe will be meeting on Tuesday\, October 13\, 2026 at 6pm in the Fenn Library at St. Luke’s Church (in the undercroft\, behind the Johnson Stage). PLEASE NOTE TIME CHANGE.

SUMMARY:Rachel's Tears: Liturgy for Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day
DESCRIPTION:In St. Luke’s chapel at 5 pm on October 14th (the eve of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day)\, the church is offering a Service of Remembrance for all those who have experienced the many kinds of grief and loss that may be associated with pregnancy. \nThe experience of this kind of loss is deeply personal. People with all kinds of grief associated with the loss of a pregnancy or infant are welcome. Sometimes\, when it comes to reproductive health\, it can seem like your grief doesn’t “count\,” or they carry shame or blame that their loss is “their fault.” \nHere at St. Luke’s\, there is no litmus test or judgment: If you are carrying with you the burden of a lost (or ended) pregnancy\, come set that burden down in community – and in the hands of the One who has made and loves us all.

SUMMARY:Robert H. Jackson Statue Lighting Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The Robert H. Jackson Center will mark the ceremonial first lighting of its Robert H. Jackson statue in October\, shining new attention on history\, justice and civic responsibility. The public is invited to join the Center at 7 p.m. Wednesday\, Oct. 14\, for a brief ceremony\, the first lighting of the statue and seasonal hot cider on the front porch. \nThe new lighting\, made possible by support from the Gebbie Foundation\, will illuminate the statue each evening and keep Justice Jackson’s likeness visible to the community.Sculpted by Dexter Benedict in 1996\, the statue originally stood at nearby Samuel G. Love Elementary School\, where it welcomed visitors entering downtown Jamestown. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor presided over the unveiling. \nThe statue was relocated to the Center’s front lawn in May 2016\, when the Jackson Center assumed responsibility for its care. Today\, it stands as a tribute to a Jamestown attorney whose service on the U.S. Supreme Court and work as chief U.S. prosecutor at Nuremberg helped shape modern justice worldwide. \nDate: Wednesday\, Oct. 14\, 2026Time: 7 p.m.\, with brief remarks at 7:15 p.m.Location: Robert H. Jackson Center\, 305 E. Fourth St.\, Jamestown\, N.Y. 14701 \nThe event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Comedy Open Mic @ Wicked Warren's Jamestown
DESCRIPTION:Starting Wednesday\, July 1st\, we’re opening the doors to a new weekly comedy open mic at Wicked Warren’s Jamestown. \nEvery Wednesday from 7PM to 9PM\, we’ll be upstairs on the 3rd floor in the new ballroom\, bar\, and stage area\, trying to do something simple and weirdly important: \nBuild the local comedy and art scene back up from the floorboards. \nThis is a comedian-focused open mic\, but all art is welcome. Comedy\, poetry\, storytelling\, music\, strange little performance experiments\, something you wrote on a napkin in a parking lot while your life briefly became a weather event. Bring it up. \nSign ups start at 6:30PM. \nEach performer gets 8 minutes. \nThere will be a 15 minute hard cap if the night allows for longer pieces\, but please plan for 8 unless told otherwise. \nIf you need anything beyond a mic\, stage\, and PA\, please let Paul Clemente know ahead of time. \nIf you want to sign up in advance\, let Paul Clemente know. \nIf you don’t know Paul Clemente\, get to know him. He is around. \nA few house notes: \nNo hate speech. \nWhen it is your turn\, please keep the setup to a minimum so we can keep the night moving. \nBe kind to first-timers. \nListen to the performers. \nSupport the room you want to exist. \nDepending on momentum\, we’ll try to make one Wednesday a month a mixed open mic focused on outsider art forms\, weird ideas\, unusual performances\, and the kind of creative stuff that does not always have a normal place to land. \nThis is for comics. \nThis is for artists. \nThis is for people who used to have a scene and miss it. \nThis is for people who never had one and want in. \nWednesdays at Wicked Warren’s. \n3rd floor. \n7PM to 9PM. \nSign ups at 6:30PM. \nLet’s see what we can bring back to life.
