SUMMARY:Comedy Open Mic @ Wicked Warren's Jamestown
DESCRIPTION:Starting Wednesday\, July 1st\, we’re opening the doors to a new weekly comedy open mic at Wicked Warren’s Jamestown. \nEvery Wednesday from 7PM to 9PM\, we’ll be upstairs on the 3rd floor in the new ballroom\, bar\, and stage area\, trying to do something simple and weirdly important: \nBuild the local comedy and art scene back up from the floorboards. \nThis is a comedian-focused open mic\, but all art is welcome. Comedy\, poetry\, storytelling\, music\, strange little performance experiments\, something you wrote on a napkin in a parking lot while your life briefly became a weather event. Bring it up. \nSign ups start at 6:30PM. \nEach performer gets 8 minutes. \nThere will be a 15 minute hard cap if the night allows for longer pieces\, but please plan for 8 unless told otherwise. \nIf you need anything beyond a mic\, stage\, and PA\, please let Paul Clemente know ahead of time. \nIf you want to sign up in advance\, let Paul Clemente know. \nIf you don’t know Paul Clemente\, get to know him. He is around. \nA few house notes: \nNo hate speech. \nWhen it is your turn\, please keep the setup to a minimum so we can keep the night moving. \nBe kind to first-timers. \nListen to the performers. \nSupport the room you want to exist. \nDepending on momentum\, we’ll try to make one Wednesday a month a mixed open mic focused on outsider art forms\, weird ideas\, unusual performances\, and the kind of creative stuff that does not always have a normal place to land. \nThis is for comics. \nThis is for artists. \nThis is for people who used to have a scene and miss it. \nThis is for people who never had one and want in. \nWednesdays at Wicked Warren’s. \n3rd floor. \n7PM to 9PM. \nSign ups at 6:30PM. \nLet’s see what we can bring back to life.

SUMMARY:Open Observatory Night
DESCRIPTION:At 7:30 the Martz-Kohl Observatories will be open to visitors. \nYou are welcome to tour the facility and view through several available telescopes\, weather permitting.  The observatory houses multiple telescopes to use for viewing celestial objects in the night sky.  The Kohl Telescope is a 20-inch classical Cassegrain reflecting telescope that was built by DFM Engineering in Colorado.  Also available for viewing\, located in the roll-off roof area of the observatory\, is a mounted 12-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain reflector telescope.  The Cassegrain reflector telescopes use a combination of the primary concave mirror and a secondary convex mirror.  Guests are also welcome to bring in their own telescopes to set up on the roll off roof area of the observatory\, weather permitting. \nWhen planning a visit to the observatory\, it is best to have seasonal attire on hand as the domes which house the telescopes\, as well as the roll-off roof area of the observatory\, are not heated.  \nThe observatory is located at 176 Robbins Hill Rd.\, Frewsburg\, NY.  The Martz-Kohl Observatory is an all-volunteer\, non-profit association [501(c)3] and does not charge for admission.  A non-member donation of $5.00 per adult and $2.00 per child or student is appreciated. \nThe Martz-Kohl Observatory houses one of the largest public robotic telescopes in the Northeastern United States.  On Open Observatory nights\, the public is welcome to come and tour the facility.  If the evening sky is clear\, the telescopes will be used to view the celestial sphere.  The observatory can be contacted at (716) 569-3689.  More information can be accessed at the observatory web site\, martzobservatory.org. \nAbout Martz-Kohl Observatory: \nThe Marshal Martz Memorial Astronomical Association\, Inc. is a non-profit organization devoted to the amateur astronomer. The emphasis of the association is observational astronomy\, well-rooted in public education and enjoyment of the starry skies.

SUMMARY:Author Visit with Paul Leone - The Marlow Murder
DESCRIPTION:The Marlow Murder \nThe latest publication from Chautauqua Region Press\, The Marlow Murder reproduces the Jamestown Journal’s detailed coverage of the arrest\, trial\, conviction and execution in 1872 of the Jamestown Brewery proprietor Charles Marlow. Marlow murdered German immigrant William Bachman on the brewery’s premises in August 1871. The grisly murder included the burning of Bachman’s body in the brewery’s furnace. Celebrated Jamestown attorney Porter Sheldon defended Marlow through court proceedings. The testimony of the lengthy schedule of witnesses illuminates the demographics of the Chautauqua County community at the time. Local history enthusiasts will appreciate the description of the county’s physical Victorian attributes. Author Paul Leone has included additional historical information beyond the scope of the Journal’s reporting.

SUMMARY:25 Years of Asking Questions: Who Belongs in America?
DESCRIPTION:Who belongs in America? And who decides? \nFrom Ellis Island to today’s debates over immigration and citizenship\, questions of inclusion and exclusion have long shaped the nation’s identity. Inspired by Korematsu v. United States\, this program explores how fear\, race\, and national security have influenced who is recognized as fully “American.” In his dissent\, Robert H. Jackson warned of the dangers of allowing racial discrimination under the Constitution. Join us for a timely conversation on citizenship\, national identity\, and the constitutional boundaries of belonging. \nThis lecture is part of our 25 Years of Asking Questions lecture series. We are thankful to the Southern Chautauqua Federal Credit Union for sponsoring this series. Southern Chautauqua Federal Credit Union\, supporting individuals and organizations who also impact\, empower\, and achieve within our community. \nAbout the Speaker \nRobert L. Tsai is Professor of Law and Harry Elwood Warren Memorial Scholar at Boston University School of Law\, where he teaches constitutional law\, presidential leadership\, and individual rights. For the 2024–2025 academic year\, he serves as the Laurance Rockefeller Visiting Faculty Fellow at Princeton University’s University Center for Human Values. \nA leading scholar of constitutional culture and democratic development\, Professor Tsai’s work explores how legal ideas shape political life\, particularly in areas such as inequality\, popular sovereignty\, and institutional design. He is the author of four books\, including Demand the Impossible: One Lawyer’s Pursuit of Equal Justice for All (2024). Additionally\, Professor Tsai’s scholarship has appeared in leading law reviews and his commentary has been featured in outlets such as The New Yorker\, The New York Times\, NPR\, and MSNBC. A frequent public speaker\, he has delivered Constitution Day lectures at institutions across the country\, including the National Archives and the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. \nHe is a founding board member of the Journal of American Constitutional History and was elected to the American Law Institute in 2023. Professor Tsai earned his J.D. from Yale Law School and his undergraduate degree from the University of California\, Los Angeles.
