DESCRIPTION:Melody Barnes is the founding executive director of the University of Virginia’s Karsh Institute of Democracy\, where she leads the Institute on an action-oriented path to realizing the promise of democracy in both principle and practice. She joins Chautauqua’s weeklong exploration of “America at 250” with remarks reflecting on the foundations of democracy and justice\, tracing throughlines from the country’s founding to the work of democracy today. \nIn addition to her leadership at the Karsh Institute\, Barnes is the W.L. Lyons Brown Family Director for Policy and Public Engagement in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences’ Democracy Initiative\, a professor of practice at UVA’s Miller Center of Public Affairs\, and a distinguished fellow at UVA’s School of Law. She is also co-founder of the domestic policy strategy firm MB2 Solutions. In 2024–25\, Barnes was an inaugural recipient of the Chautauqua Perry Fellowship in Democracy alongside New York Times columnist David French; she is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations\, and serves on the boards of several corporate\, nonprofit\, and philanthropic organizations. \nA committed public servant\, Barnes brings more than 25 years of experience shaping public policy at the highest levels of government and the non-profit sector. She served as assistant to the president and director of the White House Domestic Policy Council under President Barack Obama. Previously\, she was executive vice president for policy at the Center for American Progress and chief counsel to the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. She began her career in law as an associate at Shearman & Sterling in New York. \nBarnes holds a B.A. with honors in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a J.D. from the University of Michigan.

From 2018 through 2025\, she served as a scholarly advisor and on-camera expert for the Florentine Films/Ken Burns documentary\, “The American Revolution.” \nKamensky is the author or editor of numerous books spanning four centuries of American history\, including A Revolution in Color: The World of John Singleton Copley\, which won four major prizes and was a finalist for several others. Her most recent book\, Candida Royalle and the Sexual Revolution\, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Biography.

They swim in the same lyrical waves as I’m With Her\, Folk Bitch Trio\, The Staves\, and other trios featuring impeccable harmonies and elevated songwriting so good they make the balancing act seem simple. The band’s sophomore full-length\, Rough Magic\, is about friends — how we connect with them (or fail to)\, how we fight with them\, and most importantly\, how we love them.
