Through this conversation\, we aim to provide historical\, legal\, and civic context that helps the public better understand how free speech shapes our democracy\, and how we can navigate the challenges of truth\, safety\, and open discourse in a rapidly changing world. \nThis conversation is grounded in the legacy of Robert H. Jackson\, who wrote in West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette\, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) that “freedom to differ is not limited to things that do not matter much.” Jackson’s words remind us that the right to speak\, dissent\, and challenge authority lies at the heart of democratic life\, a principle that remains as vital and contested today as it was in his time. \nAbout the SpeakerOur featured speaker\, Aaron Saykin\, leads the Media and First Amendment Practice at Hodgson Russ LLP in Buffalo\, where he advises clients on defamation\, free speech\, and access-to-information issues under New York’s Open Meetings and Freedom of Information Laws. We all teach our kids “stranger danger\,” but the sad reality is that today’s threats are often more subtle than a “creepy van.”That’s why I am so incredibly proud that Sean Strong will be offering the “Tricky People: Kids Safety Workshop” right here in our community at Valley Outdoors on January 10th.This isn’t a lecture; it’s a hands-on empowerment course designed to give kids real tools. They learn to spot the warning signs of “tricky people” (who aren’t always obvious strangers)\, how to use their voices\, and practical self-defense techniques to get away and get help. Renee Nicole Good was murdered by an ICE agent in broad daylight.We are witnessing the normalization of a police state\, one where chaos is manufactured\, due process is eroded\, and violence is sanctioned under the guise of “enforcement.” This killing wascarried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)\, an agency that is creating instability\, trauma\, and death. \nWe will be peacefully protesting as a part of a nationwide day of mobilization on Saturday from 11-2 at Dow Park in Jamestown. Bring your signs\, bring your instruments and noise makers\, bring your voices\, and even bring a bag of SALT!!! We must be loud and large to let our community and the nation know that we support our local immigrant community and will not wait for the horrific events from Minneapolis to happen in our own community.

Enjoy a day/evening of discoveries\, food\, and prizes at the Hall House for an excellent cause! \nLibrary Lock-In: Saturday\, January 10\, 2026 from 12 PM to 10 PM. Cost is $30. Come to the Fenton or call (716) 664-6256 to register. All registration deposits are to be allocated to the preservation and necessary upkeep of the research library. \nIf you are unable to attend the Library Lock-in to but are still interested in contributing to the preservation and necessary upkeep of the research library\, please donate on our website. A lot goes into the preservation of the white\, four-pillared\, Greek revival home that was originally constructed for William Hall in 1846\, its library\, and its surrounding property at the corner of Washington Street and Forest Avenue.
