DESCRIPTION:Tucked away from view behind respectable facades\, alleys were indispensable elements in American cities during the last half of the nineteenth century. The “impolite” realities of the industrial movement were hidden from Victorian society. Jamestown had 5 alleys – what are their stories? Learn about them on the Hidden Alleys tour. \nParticipants will meet at the Fenton History Center at 10:00 a.m. \nThe Fenton History Center conducts historic walking tours from June to August. The cost is $8 for members and $12 for non-members. Participants can pre-register online\, at the Fenton\, or by phone at 716-664-6256. There is a limit of 20 people for each tour. \nFor the first time\, we are introducing the Full Circuit History Pass\, which provides individual access to all of the Fenton Historic Walking Tours throughout the 2026 season. DESCRIPTION:A Real Witch Hunt and other Ghostly Delights is a presentation in 3 parts. Part one is the adventure of three teachers at West Valley Central School from 1979-81 who explored the legend of Sophia Disch\, the legendary Witch of West Valley. Over 3 years we researched the true story of the Disch family and why Sophia\, in life and in her afterlife was considered a witch by many of the local citizens. Part 2 is a short journey through Chautauqua County and some of the unsolved stories and legends of ghosts and spirits that have haunted our villages and towns nearby and a challenge to our audience to perhaps go on their own adventure to solve these mysteries with todays modern technology. Finally\, there will be a short discussion of the role of our modern day witches here in Western New York. (i.e. The Witchy Women of the Finger Lakes). Presented by Rick DeKay\, who is a middle school teacher. \nThe 2026 Fenton History Center Lecture Series features evening lectures between April and October. This event is free and open to the public. Lectures are held in the dining room at the Gov. Reuben Fenton mansion. They are also streamed via YouTube. SUMMARY:Echoes of the Hollywood | A World Premiere & Walking Tour of the 100-Year-Old Theater
DESCRIPTION:Gowanda’s hundred year old theater gets a musical walking tour presented by composer and artist Nathan Hall who returns to his hometown. \nDenver-based composer and artist Nathan Hall returns to his hometown of Gowanda to present a new original hour-long musical walking tour of the restored Hollywood Theater which celebrates its100th anniversary during the month of April. “Echoes of the Hollywood” is a historic guided tour of the space that alternates with ten music performances throughout the theater’s spaces as audiences are led through the theater including backstage\, the balcony and behind-the-scenes. \nHall envisioned the work as a continuation of his explorations of specific WNY places and their history most notable from a 2017 tour of Buffalo’s Silo City which used the reverberations of the concrete silos for choral and percussion effects. \nPerformers for the work include Western NY soprano Kimberly Merrill and Fredonia-based saxophonist Jacob Swanson\, along with local student musicians and regional performers coming from Pittsburgh and Providence to lend their talents. \nHall says: “As I was growing up in the 90’s\, the Hollywood was mostly abandoned. I was happy to be a part of many Harley Happenings (later Hollywood Happenings) to raise money for the theater’s restoration. Now in 2026\, I have an opportunity to give music back to the area\, and show audiences that new and original music can be inspired by this amazing place.”
