SUMMARY:Artemis II and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:The next chapter of human spaceflight is unfolding as NASA prepares for the historic Artemis II and III missions\, marking our return to the Moon for the first time in over fifty years. The Martz-Kohl Observatory will host a very timely presentation from a core member of the NASA Artemis program on Wednesday\, February 18\, 2026\, at 7:30 PM EST. This talk will provide a deep dive into the science and research that will define the upcoming voyages to the Moon and the eventual path to Mars. \nThis interactive session will be shown on our big screen at the Martz-Kohl Observatory and available online via Zoom. You are encouraged to come to the observatory to virtually meet our speaker and join in our always lively Q&A after the talk. Later\, if the weather cooperates\, we offer tours and viewing opportunities through the big telescopes. Dress as you would for outside. Our classroom is heated but the observatory domes are not. More info: https://martzobservatory.org \nHumans are heading back to the Moon—not just to visit\, but to pioneer the future of space science. Artemis II will propel a crew of four into deep space for a ten-day mission of discovery. From their unique position near the lunar surface\, the crew will facilitate vital investigations into radiation and human biology\, gathering the “survival data” necessary to make long-term human presence in space a reality. \nLooking further ahead\, the presentation will illuminate the ambitious goals of Artemis III\, the mission destined to land the first humans near the lunar South Pole. This thirty-day expedition involves a complex sequence of maneuvers where two crew members will descend to the lunar surface for an intensive week of exploration. Their work will focus on lunar and planetary geology in a region that has remained largely mysterious until now. By conducting on-site science in the permanently shadowed craters of the South Pole\, these pioneers will uncover secrets about the solar system’s history and the presence of vital resources like water ice. \nAttendees can expect a comprehensive overview of the research being performed by the Artemis program\, ranging from advanced biological sciences to the technical challenges of lunar operations. This event offers a rare opportunity for a general audience to engage with a NASA team member who is directly working to turn the dream of a long-term lunar presence into a reality.

SUMMARY:Chautauqua County and America's 250th
DESCRIPTION:America celebrates the 250th Anniversary of its independence this year; and all across the nation events are being planned to commemorate this milestone. Chautauqua County is no different. \nThere were no Revolutionary War battles in Chautauqua County\, and precious few Native Americans and no white settlers living here\, Consequently people generally think our Revolutionary War heritage consists only of our veterans buried in local cemeteries and possibly a very few artifacts brought in by the earliest families. However\, there are half a dozen or so ways in which the land that is now Chautauqua County did have some particular relevance to the war. \nChautauqua County Historian Norman Carlson will examine these ways in this talk. From the personal notebook of Eliakim Garfield which documented events between 1771 and 1797\, including the outbreak of the Revolutionary War\, and now resides at the Fenton Historical Center in Jamestown\, to Continental currency notes from 1776 that were used to finance the war later found in Ripley\, to suspicion that alleged turncoat Simon Ginty lived for a time in Chautauqua County. These connections and more will be explored by Carlson. \nCarlson has been Chautauqua County’s Historian since 2024. He has extensive experience in the field having spent nearly 30 years as Collections Manager at the Fenton History Center in Jamestown and having been highly active in various local history organizations. Notably\, he has volunteered with the Busti Historical Society for more than 50 years and has been involved with the Busti Bicentennial Committee\, reflecting his dedication to preserving and promoting local history. \nPart of Here & There – Chautauqua County History\, Travelers\, & Memories \nAdmission is FREE\, although donations are gratefully accepted

SUMMARY:Radio Astronomy: A Different View of the Cosmos
DESCRIPTION:The Martz-Kohl Observatory invites you to a presentation by veteran engineer and amateur radio expert Mario Loreti on March 18 at 7:30 p.m. ET. His lecture\, “Radio Astronomy: A Different View of the Cosmos\,” explores the spectrum of the universe hidden from the human eye. While optical telescopes rely on visible light\, radio astronomy provides vital data that lenses cannot capture. Loreti will bridge these two worlds using a multi-media approach\, including audio derived from celestial objects. \nMario Loreti brings over 40 years of technical expertise to the observatory. A former Chief Engineer for WERG-FM and Lab Technician for the Penn State Behrend School of Engineering\, Loreti has spent decades collaborating with astrophysics departments and supporting faculty research. Now a volunteer for the Yahn Planetarium and a licensed amateur radio operator\, he is currently constructing his own radio telescope to further study the signature sounds of the stars. \nThe event will be held live at the observatory (176 Robbin Hill Rd\, Frewsburg\, NY 14738) and streamed via Zoom. A Q&A session will follow the talk\, and weather permitting\, the observatory will be open for public viewing. Please note that while the lecture room is heated\, attendees should dress for the outdoors if they plan to participate in tours or telescope viewing. SUMMARY:Jamestown's Trolley #93 Marks 100th Birthday
DESCRIPTION:The Jamestown Street Railway Trolley Car #93 marks its 100th birthday this year. \nPut in service in 1926\, it was one of the many street cars that serviced passengers somewhere within Erie County\, NY\, Erie County\, PA\, and Chautauqua County. It is arguably the last surviving stand-alone car remaining from these areas. \nA group of volunteers has been working since 2014 to restore the trolley car\, a project that is now nearing completion. While pretty much cosmetically restored\, there is still some work to be done on the trucks (the four railroad type wheel assembly that supports the trolley on the rails)\, but that is waiting on the completion of its final display location. Plans for a display building in conjunction with the Fenton History Center are moving forward \, while fundraising for the project continues toward providing all that is necessary to ensure that this last remaining piece of Chautauqua County streetcar history is preserved. \nProject Volunteer Bob Johnston will talk about this important piece of Chautauqua County history and provide more information on its status and plans to celebrate its 100th birthday. \nPart of Here & There – Chautauqua County History\, Travelers\, & Memories \nAdmission is FREE\, although donations are gratefully accepted

SUMMARY:Lecture: Listening for Bumps in the Night: Gravitational Waves
DESCRIPTION:Imagine the universe as a vast\, silent ocean where the most violent events—the collision of massive black holes—send invisible “shudders” through the very fabric of space-time. To capture these faint whispers from the deep cosmos\, the NSF Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) utilizes colossal laser detectors in Washington and Louisiana. These instruments are so sensitive they can detect movements smaller than the width of an atom. After a decade of refining this incredible technology\, LIGO made history in 2015 by detecting a collision from 1.3 billion light-years away\, forever changing how we explore the deepest mysteries of our universe. \nWe are delighted to host Keith Thorne\, a research physicist who was at the heart of these historic astronomical breakthroughs. After earning his doctorate at Fermilab\, Keith joined the LIGO collaboration in 2003 and eventually led the real-time controls and computing groups at the Livingston\, Louisiana observatory. His technical leadership was instrumental in the first-ever detection of gravitational waves and the vital system upgrades that followed through 2024. Now retired in Wellsboro\, PA\, Keith remains a pillar of the local astronomical community through his work with asteroid occultation observations. \nThis interactive session will be broadcast on our big screen at the Martz-Kohl Observatory and is also available to join online via Zoom. We encourage you to join us in person at the observatory to virtually meet our speaker and participate in our always-lively Q&A session following the talk. If the weather permits\, we will conclude the evening with guided tours and viewing opportunities through our premier telescopes. SUMMARY:The Erie Railroad Comes to Dunkirk
DESCRIPTION:The New York and Erie Rail Road was the first railroad to link the Atlantic and the Great Lakes; and when it opened in 1851 it was the longest railroad in the world. \nRailroad historian William D. Burt will show how it happened — the choice of Dunkirk as the western terminus\, the original line NY&E built and then abandoned in favor of a better one\, and the 1851 grand opening celebration. He will discuss how railroad directors speculated in Dunkirk land and laid out several blocks of the city\, and how many Dunkirk streets are named for them. \nWhat is the Erie’s legacy in Dunkirk? This well-illustrated presentation covers it all. \nBill published his first history article when he was in high school and has continued writing\, off and on\, ever since. Following a career in the railroad industry\, he took up researching and writing about the history of the fascinating business\, with a primary interest in Eastern railroading\, particularly the Erie Lackawanna and its predecessor railroads. \nHe holds a BA in Political Science from SUNY Geneseo and a dual MS in Transportation Planning and Engineering and Management Science from Polytechnic Institute of New York (now part of NYU). He culminated a 27-year career in the railroad industry as President and COO of the Livonia\, Avon & Lakeville Railroad and its subsidiaries B&H Rail Corp. and Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad. \nPart of Here & There – Chautauqua County History\, Travelers\, & Memories \nAdmission is FREE\, although donations are gratefully accepted
