SUMMARY:Barcelona Harbor: 1800-1860
DESCRIPTION:The harbor we now know as Barcelona played a prominent role in the early settlement and development of Chautauqua County\, beginning with improvements by the Holland Land Company and continuing with federal appropriations aimed at improving navigation on Lake Erie. \nFor nearly 40 years in the 1800s\, Barcelona was one of the busiest communities in the county! Former Chautauqua County Historian Michelle Henry will discuss the investors who built piers and large commercial warehouses at Barcelona\, the Lake Erie storms that regularly threatened the shoreline and sailing vessels\, and the passenger ships that brought both prominent visitors and newly arriving immigrants to our county. \nHenry was appointed the Chautauqua County Historian in March 2000 and also served as the County’s Record Management Coordinator until she retired in January 2023. She is currently Research Historian with the NYS Office of Parks\, Recreation and Historic Preservation. \nPart of Here & There – Chautauqua County History\, Travelers\, & Memories \nAdmission is FREE\, although donations are gratefully accepted

SUMMARY:Meet Your Neighbors - Exhibition Program with Niall Benvie
DESCRIPTION:How often does a Scotsman living in the south of France visit western New York? \nNiall Benvie\, an exceptional environmental photographer and co-founder of the Meet Your Neighbours project\, will be joining us via Zoom on Saturday\, January 31\, at 12 pm (a 40-minute presentation followed by 10 minutes for questions/comments). Seating and a viewing screen will be set up in the Green Gallery\, and the public may speak with Benvie in real time during the presentation. Viewers may also engage with the Zoom at home. Light refreshments will be available in the RTPI lobby. \nBenvie’s program will focus on his Environmental Impact Award-winning project now on display at RTPI\, Meet Your Neighbours: how the project got its start\, and an astonishing survey of images from the project that expands on the photographs displayed in the museum. Meet Your Neighbours uses portraiture photography intended to take the viewer’s breath away. Each subject is photographed in the field\, against a white background brought onto the scene. This technique not only shows the subject in great detail\, but reveals their translucent qualities too. Each subject becomes a celebrity\, an individual. \nFounded in 2009\, Meet Your Neighbours is a worldwide photographic initiative created by Niall Benvie and Clay Bolt. The project reconnects people with the wildlife on their own doorsteps. These creatures and plants are vital: they represent the first\, and for some\, the only contact with wild nature we have. Yet too often they are overlooked\, undervalued. This is conservation photography at the grass-roots level\, asking people to care about where they live and showing them how extraordinary it is in a novel way.

SUMMARY:Artemis II and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:The next chapter of human spaceflight is unfolding as NASA prepares for the historic Artemis II and III missions\, marking our return to the Moon for the first time in over fifty years. The Martz-Kohl Observatory will host a very timely presentation from a core member of the NASA Artemis program on Wednesday\, February 18\, 2026\, at 7:30 PM EST. This talk will provide a deep dive into the science and research that will define the upcoming voyages to the Moon and the eventual path to Mars. \nThis interactive session will be shown on our big screen at the Martz-Kohl Observatory and available online via Zoom. You are encouraged to come to the observatory to virtually meet our speaker and join in our always lively Q&A after the talk. Later\, if the weather cooperates\, we offer tours and viewing opportunities through the big telescopes. Dress as you would for outside. Our classroom is heated but the observatory domes are not. More info: https://martzobservatory.org \nHumans are heading back to the Moon—not just to visit\, but to pioneer the future of space science. Artemis II will propel a crew of four into deep space for a ten-day mission of discovery. From their unique position near the lunar surface\, the crew will facilitate vital investigations into radiation and human biology\, gathering the “survival data” necessary to make long-term human presence in space a reality. \nLooking further ahead\, the presentation will illuminate the ambitious goals of Artemis III\, the mission destined to land the first humans near the lunar South Pole. This thirty-day expedition involves a complex sequence of maneuvers where two crew members will descend to the lunar surface for an intensive week of exploration. Their work will focus on lunar and planetary geology in a region that has remained largely mysterious until now. By conducting on-site science in the permanently shadowed craters of the South Pole\, these pioneers will uncover secrets about the solar system’s history and the presence of vital resources like water ice. \nAttendees can expect a comprehensive overview of the research being performed by the Artemis program\, ranging from advanced biological sciences to the technical challenges of lunar operations. This event offers a rare opportunity for a general audience to engage with a NASA team member who is directly working to turn the dream of a long-term lunar presence into a reality.

SUMMARY:Chautauqua County and America's 250th
DESCRIPTION:America celebrates the 250th Anniversary of its independence this year; and all across the nation events are being planned to commemorate this milestone. Chautauqua County is no different. \nThere were no Revolutionary War battles in Chautauqua County\, and precious few Native Americans and no white settlers living here\, Consequently people generally think our Revolutionary War heritage consists only of our veterans buried in local cemeteries and possibly a very few artifacts brought in by the earliest families. However\, there are half a dozen or so ways in which the land that is now Chautauqua County did have some particular relevance to the war. \nChautauqua County Historian Norman Carlson will examine these ways in this talk. From the personal notebook of Eliakim Garfield which documented events between 1771 and 1797\, including the outbreak of the Revolutionary War\, and now resides at the Fenton Historical Center in Jamestown\, to Continental currency notes from 1776 that were used to finance the war later found in Ripley\, to suspicion that alleged turncoat Simon Ginty lived for a time in Chautauqua County. These connections and more will be explored by Carlson. \nCarlson has been Chautauqua County’s Historian since 2024. He has extensive experience in the field having spent nearly 30 years as Collections Manager at the Fenton History Center in Jamestown and having been highly active in various local history organizations. Notably\, he has volunteered with the Busti Historical Society for more than 50 years and has been involved with the Busti Bicentennial Committee\, reflecting his dedication to preserving and promoting local history. \nPart of Here & There – Chautauqua County History\, Travelers\, & Memories \nAdmission is FREE\, although donations are gratefully accepted

SUMMARY:A Celebration of Stories and Science from The Spark Bird Project
DESCRIPTION:Join RTPI and BWD Magazine (Bird Watcher’s Digest) to learn more about The Spark Bird Project from founder Jenn Lodi-Smith\, Ph.D.\, the ongoing community science initiative gathering\, sharing\, and studying the stories of people’s passion for birds! Connect with fellow bird enthusiasts to learn more about the project\, enjoy spark bird stories\, and get an update on what we are discovering from over 400 spark birders and growing. \nJen Lodi-Smith will be joining us via Zoom on March 13 at 1 pm. (a 40-minute presentation followed by 10 minutes for questions/comments). Seating and a viewing screen will be set up in the Green Gallery\, and the public may speak with Jen in real time during the presentation. Viewers may also engage with the Zoom at home. Light refreshments will be available in the RTPI lobby. \nWhat is the Spark Bird Project? \nThe Spark Bird Project is an ongoing participatory community social science initiative designed to gather\, share\, and study the stories of people’s passion for birds while gaining scientific insights into a critical piece in the ecology of birds: birders themselves. The Spark Bird Project also helps birders better understand each other by sharing spark bird stories publicly at https://www.spark-bird.org/stories and through The Spark Bird Podcast. \nAbout the Host \nJenn Lodi-Smith\, Ph.D.\, the founder and director of The Spark Bird Project\, is a Professor of Psychology at Canisius University and scholar-in-residence with the Roger Tory Peterson Institute. Jenn has been using mixed methods to longitudinally study identity development for over 20 years\, most recently in the context of the transformative power of spark bird experiences. She serves as secretary/treasurer for the Association for Research in Personality\, associate editor of the Journal of Personality\, on the board of Birds on the Niagara\, and mentors the WNY Young Birders Club.

SUMMARY:Radio Astronomy: A Different View of the Cosmos
DESCRIPTION:The Martz-Kohl Observatory invites you to a presentation by veteran engineer and amateur radio expert Mario Loreti on March 18 at 7:30 p.m. ET. His lecture\, “Radio Astronomy: A Different View of the Cosmos\,” explores the spectrum of the universe hidden from the human eye. While optical telescopes rely on visible light\, radio astronomy provides vital data that lenses cannot capture. Loreti will bridge these two worlds using a multi-media approach\, including audio derived from celestial objects. \nMario Loreti brings over 40 years of technical expertise to the observatory. A former Chief Engineer for WERG-FM and Lab Technician for the Penn State Behrend School of Engineering\, Loreti has spent decades collaborating with astrophysics departments and supporting faculty research. Now a volunteer for the Yahn Planetarium and a licensed amateur radio operator\, he is currently constructing his own radio telescope to further study the signature sounds of the stars. \nThe event will be held live at the observatory (176 Robbin Hill Rd\, Frewsburg\, NY 14738) and streamed via Zoom. A Q&A session will follow the talk\, and weather permitting\, the observatory will be open for public viewing. Please note that while the lecture room is heated\, attendees should dress for the outdoors if they plan to participate in tours or telescope viewing. Further details and the Zoom link can be found at martzobservatory.org
