SUMMARY:Meet Your Neighbors - Exhibition Program with Niall Benvie
DESCRIPTION:How often does a Scotsman living in the south of France visit western New York? \nNiall Benvie\, an exceptional environmental photographer and co-founder of the Meet Your Neighbours project\, will be joining us via Zoom on Saturday\, January 31\, at 12 pm (a 40-minute presentation followed by 10 minutes for questions/comments). Seating and a viewing screen will be set up in the Green Gallery\, and the public may speak with Benvie in real time during the presentation. Viewers may also engage with the Zoom at home. Light refreshments will be available in the RTPI lobby. \nBenvie’s program will focus on his Environmental Impact Award-winning project now on display at RTPI\, Meet Your Neighbours: how the project got its start\, and an astonishing survey of images from the project that expands on the photographs displayed in the museum. Meet Your Neighbours uses portraiture photography intended to take the viewer’s breath away. Each subject is photographed in the field\, against a white background brought onto the scene. This technique not only shows the subject in great detail\, but reveals their translucent qualities too. Each subject becomes a celebrity\, an individual. \nFounded in 2009\, Meet Your Neighbours is a worldwide photographic initiative created by Niall Benvie and Clay Bolt. The project reconnects people with the wildlife on their own doorsteps. These creatures and plants are vital: they represent the first\, and for some\, the only contact with wild nature we have. Yet too often they are overlooked\, undervalued. This is conservation photography at the grass-roots level\, asking people to care about where they live and showing them how extraordinary it is in a novel way.

SUMMARY:Falconer "Encounter" - An Encounter with God
DESCRIPTION:Come join us on the 2 & 4th Wednesdays of each month for a light dinner at 5:30 followed by a discussion program. Topics will vary. Children’s activities will be provided. Question? Contact Pastor Mike at (716) 665-2008 \nThis episode features a filmed interview with Former Ethiopian prime minister Tamrat Layne as he discusses his encounter with God. \nAfter serving as prime minister\, Layne was convicted of corruption charges and served 12 years in prison. During his incarceration\, Layne claims he experienced a supernatural visit from God. \n“This compelling story raises questions we’ll consider at this program\,” says Lifetree representative Craig Cable. “Did God appear in an Ethiopian prison cell to Layne? Are such encounters real? If so\, why doesn’t God appear to anyone who asks him to do so?”

DESCRIPTION:Come join us on the 2 & 4th Wednesdays of each month for a light dinner at 5:30 followed by a discussion program. Topics will vary. Children’s activities will be provided. Question? Contact Pastor Mike at (716) 665-2008 \nDreams and Nightmares features a filmed interview with Dr. William Moorcroft\, author of “Understanding Sleep and Dreaming.” \nIn the interview\, Moorcroft explains that sleep is critical for our brains to function and dreams are a way for the mind to organize and process information. \n“There are different components in our brain\, and when we’re awake\, they function one way\,” Moorcroft says. “When we sleep\, that functional organization greatly changes. Sleep is not a waste of time; it is a reorganization of the brain.” \nIn the episode\, Moorcroft also discusses the cause of recurring dreams and nightmares.

SUMMARY:Barcelona Harbor: 1800-1860
DESCRIPTION:The harbor we now know as Barcelona played a prominent role in the early settlement and development of Chautauqua County\, beginning with improvements by the Holland Land Company and continuing with federal appropriations aimed at improving navigation on Lake Erie. \nFor nearly 40 years in the 1800s\, Barcelona was one of the busiest communities in the county! Former Chautauqua County Historian Michelle Henry will discuss the investors who built piers and large commercial warehouses at Barcelona\, the Lake Erie storms that regularly threatened the shoreline and sailing vessels\, and the passenger ships that brought both prominent visitors and newly arriving immigrants to our county. \nHenry was appointed the Chautauqua County Historian in March 2000 and also served as the County’s Record Management Coordinator until she retired in January 2023. She is currently Research Historian with the NYS Office of Parks\, Recreation and Historic Preservation. \nPart of Here & There – Chautauqua County History\, Travelers\, & Memories \nAdmission is FREE\, although donations are gratefully accepted

SUMMARY:Educator Seminar - Citizenship: History\, Meaning\, and Conflict
DESCRIPTION:In today’s classrooms\, educators face the challenge of navigating technology\, diverse learning needs\, and pressing social justice issues\, making relevant and practical professional development more essential than ever. The legacy of Robert H. Jackson—his commitment to justice\, democratic values\, and civil discourse during history’s most trying moments—offers a powerful model for addressing these challenges. This seminar will use Jackson’s speeches\, writings\, and cases to explore the evolution and meaning of citizenship\, connecting past principles to contemporary debates. By engaging with his vision\, educators will be equipped to foster critical discussions\, bridge history with current events\, and help students grow as informed and engaged citizens in pursuit of a just and equitable society. \nThe seminar will be taught by:– Marc Kruman\, Ph.D. (Wayne State University\, Center for the Study of Citizenship)– Sheila Vélez Martínez\, J.D. (University of Pittsburgh School of Law\, Civil Rights & Immigration Law) \nRegister today and earn CTLE credits! \nSponsored by Fessenden Laumer & DeAngelo\, PLLC.

SUMMARY:Falconer "Encounter" - Where's the Justice
DESCRIPTION:Come join us on the 2 & 4th Wednesdays of each month for a light dinner at 5:30 followed by a discussion program. Topics will vary. Children’s activities will be provided. Question? Contact Pastor Mike at (716) 665-2008 \nWhere’s the Justice? includes a filmed interview with Jasmine Lima-Marin\, whose husband\, Rene Lima-Marin\, served 10 years in prison for a robbery conviction. After rebuilding his life and finding employment\, Rene was sent back to prison when it was discovered the court made a mistake regarding the length of his sentence. \n“He didn’t have any idea this would happen\, and neither did I\,” says Jasmine. “A sentence of 98 years is essentially life in prison. SUMMARY:The Lost Journals of Sacajewea - CLSC Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Among the most memorialized women in American history\, Sacajewea served as interpreter and guide for Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery. In this visionary novel\, acclaimed Indigenous author Debra Magpie Earling brings this mythologized figure vividly to life\, casting unsparing light on the men who brutalized her and recentering Sacajewea as the arbiter of her own history. \nHere\, the young Sacajewea is bright and bold\, growing strong from the hard work of “learning all ways to survive.” When her village is raided\, Sacajewea is kidnapped and then gambled away to Charbonneau\, a French-Canadian trapper. Heavy with grief\, she learns how to survive at the edge of a strange new world. When Lewis and Clark’s expedition party arrives\, Sacajewea knows she must cross a vast and brutal terrain with her newborn son\, the white man who owns her\, and a company of men who wish to conquer and commodify the world she loves. \nLearn more with the event  belowhttps://www.chq.org/event/debra-magpie-earling/Debra Magpie Earling – Chautauqua InstitutionWelcome to Chautauqua Institution!
