SUMMARY:Little Explorers - Squirrels and Chipmunks
DESCRIPTION:Little Explorers (Children 3 – 8 with an adult)\nSquirrels and Chipmunks \nSaturday\, October 11\, 2025\n10:00 – 11:30 a.m. \n$12 Adults; $9 Nature Center members\n$9 Children 3 – 8\nPaid reservations required by Thursday\, October 9\, 2025. \nSquirrels and chipmunks can be seen and heard scurrying everywhere from backyards to deep in the forest. Join Audubon to learn about the different members of the squirrel family\, whether they are gray squirrels with fluffy tails or flying squirrels gliding from branch to branch. Figure out where these animals live and how they adapt as the seasons change. \nAfter a short hands-on lesson indoors exploring the body parts\, diets\, and homes of squirrels\, chipmunks\, and groundhogs\, it is time to bundle up and head outside where you can look for signs of squirrels\, including tracks\, nests\, and their leftover food. \nA snack is provided after the hike and a craft is offered if there is time. \nSpecial Information: This program takes place rain or shine\, please dress for the weather. \nGrey squirrels do not hibernate through the winter\, so they spend much of the fall preparing to survive the coming cold and snowy months. Learn more about the members of the squirrel family at ACNC’s Little Explorers on October 11.

SUMMARY:Native Culinary Herbs for the Home Garden with Sarah Sorci

SUMMARY:Grandmother Moon in Seneca Culture
DESCRIPTION:In Seneca culture\, Grandmother Moon is a revered celestial being\, a benevolent guardian who guides Earth’s inhabitants through the seasons and influences natural rhythms. Her consistent presence in the night sky serves as a powerful symbol of the interconnectedness of all living things and the enduring wisdom of generations past. Learn more about the myths and realities of Grandmother Moon with Ja:no’s (Janine) Bowen on August 20\, 2025\, at 7:30 p.m. This very special\, family-friendly presentation will be held at the Martz-Kohl Observatory\, 176 Robbin Hill Rd\, Frewsburg\, NY 14738. \nJa:no’s (Janine) Bowen is a member of the Beaver Clan of the Seneca Nation. She has centered her career on Seneca language revitalization efforts. In 2002\, she began teaching Seneca language and culture to elementary and junior high school students on the Allegany Territory of the Seneca Nation. In 2007\, at the request of the Allegany Education Director\, Ja:no’s became a Seneca language Instructor for Buffalo State College. In 2015\, the Seneca Nation Chief of Staff encouraged her to take on the role of Allegany Language Director. Ja:no’s received an Ed.M. from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education\, as well as an M.P.P. from the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government. In 2020\, Ja:no’s started her path back to the field of education when she began coursework for an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership. It is her goal to merge her talents to support indigenous students in their journey to become successful individuals\, capable of overcoming the unique challenges Native peoples face as they learn to walk in two worlds. \nJa:no’s Bowen observed a significant gap in understanding among her K-8 students while teaching Seneca language and culture. She noted\, “Teaching Seneca language and culture to K-8 students\, I quickly realized they had little understanding of the lunar cycle and the profound role the moon plays in our culture.” This realization prompted her to make a dedicated effort to track the Seneca moons and deepen her own comprehension of the lunar cycle. \nThis presentation will be live at Martz-Kohl Observatory and available online via Zoom. You are encouraged to come to the observatory to meet Ja:nos Bowen and to join in what could be a lively Q&A after her talk. Following the talk and Q&A\, the observatory will offer tours\, and weather permitting\, attendees will have the opportunity to experience viewing through the observatory’s telescopes. Dress appropriately for outdoor weather as the observatory domes are not heated or cooled. More info: https://martzobservatory.org

SUMMARY:2nd Mushroom Identification & Citizen Science Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Rej (amateur mycology enthusiast) for a FREE workshop where we discuss techniques for identifying mushrooms and practice what we learn in the field. Techniques covered will include observing the mushroom’s physical characteristics and environment\, its reaction to UV light and chemical reagents\, and if all else fails\, DNA sequencing.Starting with a walk through the woods behind the Botany Barn\, we will discuss what details to pay attention to in the field and how to take good photos for identification purposes. Especially interesting or tough to identify mushrooms will be collected to examine more closely back at the Botany Barn after the walk.We will also go over how to submit mushrooms for DNA sequencing as part of Mycota Labs’ 2025 summer continental mycoblitz (more information about Mycota Labs can be found here: https://mycota.com/continental-mycoblitz/). Voucher slips for submissions will be provided. An iNaturalist account is required for those interested in sending their collections for DNA sequencing.Since we will be walking through field and forest\, please dress accordingly. Trail is not difficult\, but the ground is uneven and sometimes muddy in certain areas.Although this is a free event\, we ask that you register so we can be better prepared.PLEASE REGISTER HERE: https://form.jotform.com/251594825152157
