SUMMARY:Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Survey - RTPI and JCC
DESCRIPTION:You Can Help Save Native Trees! \n\nEvery winter\, we conduct Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) surveys across the region. You can help survey hemlock trees at the Cassadaga Lakes Nature Park preserve on February 21\, or Roger Tory Peterson Institute and SUNY JCC on March 7 for the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid.\nTo volunteer\, please visit chautauquawatershed.org/events and RSVP for either survey.\nHWA is most visible in winter. In the coldest months\, the aphids go dormant and form cotton-like protective balls at the bases of hemlock needles\, making it easy to observe and diagnose. This dormant period also makes it much less likely for surveyors to accidentally spread HWA from tree to tree by physically touching multiple hemlocks in an area during a survey.\n\nBy surveying local hemlock trees and reporting any HWA we observe on them\, we can help with the implementation of targeted treatment plans to manage the infestations and prevent further spread.

SUMMARY:Little Explorers: Camouflage and Coloration
DESCRIPTION:Little Explorers (Children 3 – 8 with an adult)\nCamouflage and Coloration \nSaturday\, March 14\, 2026\n10:00 – 11:30 a.m. \n$12 Adults; $9 Nature Center members\n$9 Children 3 – 8 \nPaid reservations required by Thursday\, March 12\, 2026. \nJoin Audubon to explore the ways both predators and prey use camouflage as an important survival tool\, whether they are matching the colors and patterns of their surroundings or mimicking other plants or animals. \nThe fur\, feathers\, and shells of many animals are able to blend into the backdrop of the forests and fields\, while other animals take it a step further and mimic the leaves or branches around them. After a short hands-on lesson indoors exploring how animals use different types of camouflage\, head outside to look for signs of those animals and test your own camouflage skills in the forests and fields. \nA snack is provided after the hike and a craft is offered if there is time. \nSpecial Information: This program takes place rain or shine\, please dress for the weather \nSome animals\, like Katydids\, camouflage by mimicking leaves or other plant parts. Learn more about the types of animal camouflage at ACNC’s Little Explorers on March 14.

SUMMARY:Audubon Lights!
DESCRIPTION:Audubon Lights (All) \n$12 Adults; $9 Nature Center members\n$9 Children 3 – 15; free 2 and under \nReservations appreciated\, walk-ins welcome. \nAudubon lights up the early spring with a half-mile long trail of lights after sunset. The Nature Center building will be open during the event so you can play in the indoor nature play area\, visit the live animals\, or shop in the Blue Heron Gift Shop. Entertainment may move inside during inclement weather. \nPurchase LED light trinkets at the entrance for additional fun (and to help locate children in the dark). Bring cash to make purchasing easier. \nSpecial Information: Please bring a flashlight as a backup in case you need it on dark sections of the trail. Parking lots have lights\, but there will be an un-lit overflow parking lot used on crowded nights. Food and other goods for sale are easiest to purchase with cash\, so please bring cash for small purchases. The Nature Center building will not re-open for Audubon Lights until a half an hour before the event start. \nEnjoy a luminary-lit trail of lights at Audubon Lights on weekends from March 20 through April 4.
