SUMMARY:First Friday: All About Hellbenders with Kelly Crandall
DESCRIPTION:First Friday (Adult+)\nAll About Hellbenders with Kelly Crandall \nFriday\, February 6\, 2026\n11:00 a.m. – Noon \n$8 Adults; $6 Nature Center members\n$6 Children 9 – 15 \nReservations appreciated\, walk-ins welcome. \n  \nJoin Kelly Crandall\, a wildlife biologist with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation\, as she shines a light on one of the most cryptic and misunderstood species in New York State\, the Eastern Hellbender. \nHellbenders go by many names\, including Allegheny alligators\, snot otters\, and lasagna lizards. There are just as many questions about Hellbenders as there are names. What’s the difference between a mudpuppy and a hellbender? Are hellbenders venomous? These are some of the questions that Kelly will be answering as she talks about the life history of these salamanders\, their population status in the region and across North America\, and how we can all be better neighbors to our local streams. \nAbout the speaker: Kelly Crandall is a Chautauqua County native. After graduating from Cornell University with a degree in Animal Science in 2018\, Kelly worked as a wildlife technician on a variety of projects\, including Ocelot conservation in Texas\, Burmese Python management in the Florida Everglades\, Wild Turkey research in Missouri\, and Steelhead Creel surveys in Dunkirk for the DEC. Kelly received her Master’s Degree in Forestry from Southern Illinois University where she studied the effects of human development on the movement of mesopredators in the Florida Keys and related that to parasite transmission. Kelly now works for the NYSDEC as a Regional Wildlife Biologist where she focuses on freshwater mussels and rare & endangered species of the Allegheny Watershed. \n  \nSpecial Information: If you’d like to bring a packed lunch\, you can visit attendees and the speaker after the program.

SUMMARY:Water Safety Series - DNA of a River
DESCRIPTION:Our waterways are always changing. This workshop will focus on what makes up our local creeks and river\, how water reacts to those things\, and how to decipher and recognize the safest path. \nThe off-season is a great time to learn more about water safety. Utilizing our “river in a bag\,” we’ll have a hands-on discussion covering how water reacts to river features (downstream and upstream V\, eddy\, eddy lines\, hydraulics\, holes\, seams and standing waves\, etc); and hazards – both natural (sweepers\, deadheads\, strainers)\, and man-made (bridges\, low-head dams\, dredged areas). We’ll focus on how these affect the paddling experience and how they change at different water levels. We’ll reference these features and hazards with photos and videos from local waterways including the Allegheny River\, Clarion River\, Brokenstraw Creek\, and Conewango Creek. \nPlease note – this is a classroom workshop. We will not be on the water. Limited seats available. Reservations required. Please click on “tickets” or visit: https://www.alleghenyoutfitters.com/winter-2026-workshops

SUMMARY:Little Explorers: Tracks & Traces
DESCRIPTION:Little Explorers (Children 3 – 8 with an adult)\nTracks and Traces \nSaturday\, February 14\, 2026\n10:00 – 11:30 a.m. \n$12 Adults; $9 Nature Center members\n$9 Children 3 – 8 \nPaid reservations required by Thursday\, February 12\, 2026. \nChildren 3 – 8 with their adults are invited to use their detective skills to look for signs of animals\, and explore different ways to discover who has been hanging around Audubon this winter. \nSometimes it can be tricky to spot animals out in nature. Luckily\, animals leave clues behind so you can determine which critters have been out and about. \nAfter a short lesson and an introduction to some helpful tools to aid in your search\, it is time to bundle up and head outside where you can follow animal tracks\, look for holes in the ground and in the trees\, and see if you can find the leftovers of an animal’s lunch. \nA snack is provided after the hike and a craft is offered if there is time. \nSpecial Information: This program takes place rain or shine\, please dress for the weather.

SUMMARY:Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Survey - Cassadaga Lakes Nature Park
DESCRIPTION:You Can Help Save Native Trees! \n\nEvery winter\, we conduct Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) surveys across the region. You can help survey hemlock trees at the Cassadaga Lakes Nature Park preserve on February 21\, or Roger Tory Peterson Institute and SUNY JCC on March 7 for the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid.\nTo volunteer\, please visit chautauquawatershed.org/events and RSVP for either survey.\nHWA is most visible in winter. In the coldest months\, the aphids go dormant and form cotton-like protective balls at the bases of hemlock needles\, making it easy to observe and diagnose. This dormant period also makes it much less likely for surveyors to accidentally spread HWA from tree to tree by physically touching multiple hemlocks in an area during a survey.\n\nBy surveying local hemlock trees and reporting any HWA we observe on them\, we can help with the implementation of targeted treatment plans to manage the infestations and prevent further spread.
