SUMMARY:First Friday: The Birds of Southern France with Charlotte Schmaltz
DESCRIPTION:First Friday (Adult+)\nThe Birds of Southern France with Charlotte Schmaltz \nFriday\, January 2\, 2026\n11:00 a.m. – Noon \n$8 Adults; $6 Nature Center members\n$6 Children 9 – 15 \nReservations appreciated\, walk-ins welcome. \nJoin Nature Educator Charlotte Schmaltz as she shares her week-long exploration of the birds and nature of Southern France. \nCharlotte recently traveled to Southern France and recorded the birds she witnessed. This included spending an entire day at the Camargue Regional National Park\, a wetland wildlife preserve with an ornithological park. Whether it was listening to birdsong during morning walks to the local patisserie or spending several hours outside with a camera and binoculars\, there were many species to be seen and heard. While some birds are like those found here in Western New York\, others are completely unexpected and new. Charlotte will share photos and audio recordings of birds and stories of nature and her experiences traveling. \nCharlotte is a Nature Educator and Animal Care Specialist at Audubon Community Nature Center. She is also an avid birder and enjoys wildlife photography. Since moving to Jamestown in January 2025\, she has enjoyed learning about the nature and ecology of the region. So far\, her favorite trails are the ones at ACNC and the ones maintained by the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy. When not outside enjoying nature\, Charlotte likes relaxing with her bird\, Pepper. \nSpecial Information: If you’d like to bring a packed lunch\, you can visit attendees and the speaker after the program. \nJoin Nature Educator and Animal Care Specialist\, Charlotte Schmaltz at 11:00 a.m. on January 2 to learn about the birds of Southern France at Audubon’s First Friday program.   \n

SUMMARY:Searching for Life with the Habitable Worlds Observatory
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to attend a fascinating talk on humanity’s next great mission to search for life beyond Earth. Lee Feinberg\, Principal Architect of NASA’s proposed Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO)\, will present the science and engineering behind this future flagship telescope on Wednesday\, January 21\, 2026\, at 7:30 p.m. The talk will cover the key and driving science needs\, the architectures being studied\, and the technologies being used for the HWO. It will also discuss how lessons from previous space telescopes are being factored into the effort. \nThe Habitable Worlds Observatory is being designed as a massive\, next-generation space telescope—often called a “super-Hubble” — that will build on the technologies of the Hubble\, James Webb\, and Roman space telescopes. The primary goal of the HWO is to directly image Earth-like planets orbiting distant stars and analyze their atmospheres for biosignatures\, or chemical evidence of life. \nLee Feinberg brings a wealth of experience from NASA’s most critical space projects. He currently serves as the Principal Architect for the HWO at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. For over 20 years\, he was the Telescope Manager and optics lead for the revolutionary James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Prior to that\, he was part of the team responsible for repairing and upgrading the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Feinberg is a NASA Goddard Senior Fellow and a recipient of the US government’s Presidential Rank Award for his contributions to the JWST. \nThis talk will be shown on the big screen at the Martz-Kohl Observatory and available online via Zoom. You are encouraged to come to the observatory to virtually meet Lee Feinberg and join in our always lively Q&A after his talk. The observatory is located at 176 Robbin Hill Rd\, Frewsburg\, NY 14738. If the weather permits\, there will be public viewing opportunities. While our lecture room is heated\, you should dress for outside weather for tours and viewing. SUMMARY:Water Safety Series - DNA of a River
DESCRIPTION:Our waterways are always changing. This workshop will focus on what makes up our local creeks and river\, how water reacts to those things\, and how to decipher and recognize the safest path. \nThe off-season is a great time to learn more about water safety. Utilizing our “river in a bag\,” we’ll have a hands-on discussion covering how water reacts to river features (downstream and upstream V\, eddy\, eddy lines\, hydraulics\, holes\, seams and standing waves\, etc); and hazards – both natural (sweepers\, deadheads\, strainers)\, and man-made (bridges\, low-head dams\, dredged areas). We’ll focus on how these affect the paddling experience and how they change at different water levels. We’ll reference these features and hazards with photos and videos from local waterways including the Allegheny River\, Clarion River\, Brokenstraw Creek\, and Conewango Creek. \nPlease note – this is a classroom workshop. We will not be on the water. Limited seats available. Reservations required. Please click on “tickets” or visit: https://www.alleghenyoutfitters.com/winter-2026-workshops
