SUMMARY:25 Years of Asking Questions: What Makes a Life Matter?
DESCRIPTION:Robert H. Jackson’s journey\, from a small-town upbringing in Frewsburg to the Supreme Court and then to Nuremberg\, raises enduring questions about leadership\, justice\, and legacy. Why do we continue to study Jackson today? What makes a life worthy of remembrance? And how does one person’s commitment to principle shape institutions and ideas long after they are gone? \nIn this program\, distinguished legal historian G. Edward White explores these questions through the lens of his acclaimed new biography\, Robert H. Jackson: A Life in Judgment. Drawing from Jackson’s personal papers\, oral histories\, and decades of scholarship\, White presents a portrait of the justice who defended New Deal policies\, authored landmark opinions such as Barnette\, dissented in Korematsu\, and served as chief U.S. prosecutor at Nuremberg. \nAbout the SpeakerG. Edward White is the David and Mary Harrison Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Virginia School of Law and one of the nation’s most respected scholars of American legal history. A former clerk to Chief Justice Earl Warren\, White has authored 20 books\, received numerous national awards\, including honors from the American Historical Association\, the ABA\, and the AALS\, and is a fellow of both the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and the Society of American Historians. His scholarship ranges from constitutional law to the cultural history of American sports\, and he has delivered major endowed lectures across the country and abroad. \nHis new book\, Robert H. Jackson: A Life in Judgment\, traces Jackson’s extraordinary rise from self-taught country lawyer to Supreme Court justice and chief prosecutor at Nuremberg. It offers fresh insight into Jackson’s independent judicial philosophy\, his defense of civil liberties\, and the global impact of his work at the International Military Tribunal. \nThe book will be available for purchase at the program.

SUMMARY:25 Years of Asking Questions: Who Gets to go to School?
DESCRIPTION:From school segregation and busing to book bans\, charter schools\, and modern achievement gaps\, the fight for educational equity has long reflected the nation’s broader struggle to live up to its democratic ideals. In her lecture\, The Politics of U.S. Public Schooling: Tinkering Toward and Away from Dystopia\, Dr. Melinda Lemke invites attendees to examine how far we’ve come since Brown v. Board of Education\, and what still divides us. Through this conversation\, we aim to explore the legal\, cultural\, and policy battles that have shaped access to education in America\, and to encourage reflection on what “equal education” should mean in the 21st century. \nThe discussion is grounded in the legacy of Robert H. Jackson’s final Supreme Court case\, Brown v. Board of Education\, 347 U.S. 483 (1954)\, the landmark decision that declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional. The ruling affirmed that equality in education is essential to equality in citizenship\, an idea that continues to challenge our laws\, institutions\, and collective conscience. \nAbout the SpeakerMelinda Lemke\, Ph.D.\, is an Associate Professor of Educational Policy and affiliated faculty in Global Gender and Sexuality Studies at the Universityat Buffalo (UB)\, SUNY. Dr. Lemke is a qualitative methodologist\, and her research focuses on the politics of education and how social policies address structural violence to improve the health\, well-being\, and human rights of women and girls. This includes examining the causes\, effects\, discourses concerning\, and public system responses to gender-based violence and the largescale internal and cross-border displacement. \nDr. Lemke’s work in higher education is informed by a previous career in U.S. public secondary education and work in sexual assault prevention and advocacy. She is actively involved in shared governance at UB\, SUNY\, serving for example as faculty senator elect and as United University Professionals Buffalo Center Chapter Grievance Officer for Academics. Dr. Lemke is the author of more than 60 publications and is the recipient of multiple research and practice awards\, including most recently the Paula Silver Case Award for co-authored research on human trafficking and the Dr. Conrad F. Toepfer\, Jr. Award for doctoral mentorship.

SUMMARY:Chautauqua Progressive Action (PAL) February Meetup
DESCRIPTION:It’s been a long winter\, friends\, but it’s time to come out of hibernation and get in the game. 2026 is here. \nWe have places to go and things to do. Candidates to elect. Republicans to evict and replace with people who work for us! \nWe have to become better organized\, better prepared to protect those who are bearing the brunt of the terror from this nightmare regime\, and we must apply more pressure for consequences against those who abuse the public trust and We the People. \nPeople are waking up to the reality of what has been going on. The scandals are blowing up. The resistance is rising. There are opportunities for everyone to do their part\, large or small. \nThe future belongs to us if we refuse to fold. Let’s do this. \nSee you soon. Feel free to bring concerned friends!

SUMMARY:Nuremberg Symposium\, Images of Hate\, Trials of Conscience: What Nuremburg Taught Us About Propaganda
DESCRIPTION:Eighty years after the Nuremberg Trials\, this program revisits a vital and timely question: Can images be criminal? \nMilitary historian and legal scholar Dr. Mark M. Hull\, Ph.D.\, J.D.\, FRHistS\, FRSA (Professor\, Department of Military History\, US Army Command and General Staff College\, retired; Advisor\, Courtroom 600 Project) will explore how propaganda in Nazi Germany was not only spoken or written\, but also drawn\, filmed\, and mass-distributed. \nHis highly visual presentation will examine the postwar denazification cases of:– Veit Harlan\, Nazi filmmaker– Fritz Hippler\, propaganda film chief– Philipp Rupprecht\, cartoonist whose antisemitic caricatures helped prepare the public for genocide \nUnlike Julius Streicher—hanged at Nuremberg for incitement through his newspapers\, speeches\, and children’s books—these visual propagandists largely escaped similar accountability. Their cases reveal the profound difficulties of prosecuting persecution by image. \nDrawing on newly uncovered historical evidence and connecting it to modern parallels—from Charlottesville to the spread of digital hate memes—Dr. Hull traces the enduring power of visual propaganda. \nThis program asks: What responsibility do artists\, media figures\, and creators bear when their images fuel atrocity? And what lessons must we carry forward as we commemorate the legacy of Nuremberg? \n\nRegistration coming soon.

SUMMARY:ICE Out Protest @ Dow Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a peaceful demonstration on Saturday from 11-2 at Dow Park in Jamestown. We will have invited speakers starting at 11:15 with a street protest to follow (12-2). We are expecting extremely cold weather so make sure to dress appropriately.Donations for the New Neighbors Coalition will be accepted throughout. \nAlex Pretti was killed during an ICE enforcement operation. This was not immigration enforcement. This was Americans with guns firing repeatedly at another American. Alex Pretti was a U.S. citizen\, killed by other U.S. citizens acting under federal authority. When Americans are killed by their own government\, we should call it what it is: state violence.ICE is operating as an occupying force in American cities\, trampling on constitutional rights\, treating neighborhoods as hostile territory and residents as expendable. This is the same imperialism this administration has shown abroad\, now turned inward. The violence we are seeing is not rogue or accidental. It has been sanctioned from the top\, encouraged by a president who has made fear\, force\, and punishment central to his agenda.
