No one is coming to save us. WE are the cavalry. WE are responsible for making sure we aren’t living in a hellhole\, at least locally\, and showing our neighbors that cooperation is better than the chaos we’ve been enduring. DESCRIPTION:Corry-Jamestown Corp. was an office furniture manufacturing company located in Corry\, Pennsylvania. But it began in Jamestown\, New York\, and involved a number of people from around the country with connections to Jamestown and the metal furniture industry. Needing a factory building for the new company a factory was found in Corry and the company moved there in 1919 and the rest is history. Karen Livsey and Sam Genco will present. \nThe 2026 Fenton History Center Lecture Series features evening lectures between April and October. This event is free and open to the public. An opportunity for public comment will be provided at the conclusion of the meeting.\n\nCommunity participation is an important part of the DRI process. SUMMARY:Lecture: Appreciating the Architecture of First Presbyterian Church at 100
DESCRIPTION:Constructed 100 years ago\, First Presbyterian Church of Jamestown reflects the growth and pride of a thriving community. Ralph Adams Cram\, the building’s architect\, was one of the early twentieth century’s most influential architects. He drew inspiration from his travels throughout Europe and from the Arts and Crafts Movement then becoming popular in the United States. This movement promoted the work of talented\, local craftsmen as opposed to mass production and industrialization. The church today\, as it did 100 years ago\, stands as a masterpiece of this movement and of the hopes and dreams of the community. \nDr. John Smagner\, an architectural historian who often attended the church as a child\, will engage listeners as he highlights the many details that make the church so special. With the support and commitment of the church community\, John wrote the successful nomination to place the church on the National Register of Historic Places. \nThe 2026 Fenton History Center Lecture Series features evening lectures between April and October. In Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. v. Sawyer (1952)\, President Truman attempted to seize control of steel mills during the Korean War\, raising urgent questions about the scope of executive power. Justice Robert H. Jackson’s concurring opinion provided a careful framework for evaluating when presidential actions exceed constitutional limits\, balancing national needs with adherence to the law. \nThis lecture will examine Jackson’s reasoning in detail\, exploring the three-tiered framework he established for assessing executive authority and the enduring impact it has on debates over presidential power. From emergency actions to everyday decisions\, Jackson’s insights continue to guide legal scholars\, policymakers\, and the public in understanding the delicate balance between effective leadership and constitutional restraint. Attendees will leave with a deeper appreciation for the ways in which Jackson’s thought shapes modern governance and the protections that uphold democratic principles in times of crisis. \nAbout the SpeakerGerard N. Magliocca is a Distinguished Professor and the Lawrence A. Jegen III Professor at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law. He is the author of five books on constitutional law\, including his new book The Actual Art of Governing: Justice Robert H. Jackson’s Concurring Opinion in the Steel Seizure Case\, which offers a deep analysis of Jackson’s landmark concurring opinion and its continuing relevance to presidential power today. His biography of Justice Bushrod Washington won the Erwin N. Griswold Prize from the Supreme Court Historical Society. \nProfessor Magliocca earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford and his law degree from Yale. He joined the Indiana University faculty in 2001 after two years as an attorney and one year clerking for Judge Guido Calabresi on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. The Dunkirk Historical Museum presents a free lecture “RR101: Intro to the Railroad!” on Saturday\, May 16th at 11:15am. Museum curator Katherine Szewczuk will conduct you through a basic history of the railroad’s invention\, help you understand different jobs on the railroad\, the basics of steam power\, the state of rail travel and freight today\, and even some pop culture railroad references. We will also be rededicating our Railroad Exhibit with an original plaque that hung on the main building at Brooks Locomotive Works! \nThis talk is free and for 8 and up (all children must be accompanied by an adult). DESCRIPTION:Eighty years after the Nuremberg Trials laid the foundation for modern international criminal law\, there is still no global treaty solely dedicated to the prevention and punishment of crimes against humanity. That may soon change. In November 2024\, the United Nations Sixth Committee adopted a resolution advancing negotiations on a draft Crimes Against Humanity Treaty. \nThis panel will trace the trajectory from the 1945 Nuremberg Charter to today’s treaty initiative. Panelists will explore how the definition of crimes against humanity has evolved to address contemporary challenges\, and why a dedicated treaty is urgently needed.
