SUMMARY:RTPI 2026 Plein Air Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Roger Tory Peterson Institute in Jamestown\, New York\, is a living embodiment of the Peterson Field Guide. It is a gateway to the natural area wonders that inspired Roger Tory Peterson to his career as one of the world’s premier artist-naturalists and international ambassador for the protection of nature. With a 27-acre nature preserve of wildflower gardens\, pollinator meadows\, and mature stands of hemlock trees\, the Peterson Preserve is a sanctuary for visitors. To celebrate this and other natural areas in Western New York\, RTPI is thrilled to announce our fifth annual Plein Air Festival. \nThe Roger Tory Peterson Institute Plein Air Festival is an open-enrollment plein air event in Western New York. Artists will have the opportunity to discover the beautiful natural scenery that inspired the young Roger Tory Peterson. Artists may create works at various locations within the area\, with suggested locations provided two weeks before the festival. \nFollowing a week of creating artworks en plein air\, artists are invited to display their completed artworks at the “Wet Paint” show and sale on Saturday\, September 19. All artworks submitted to the show will be entered into a judged plein air art competition\, with awards announced during the closing reception on Saturday\, September 19\, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. All works submitted to the show will also be considered for an exhibition of plein air artworks at RTPI\, to be held in the Fall of 2026. \nPrize money will be awarded for 1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd place: $700\, $500\, and $300\, respectively. \nPainters may paint anywhere in Western New York; however\, RTPI will provide a list of suggested locations to choose from. \nArtist credit: Kristen Muench\, Chautauqua Gorge painting on location 2025

SUMMARY:The Road to Rouen III
DESCRIPTION:“Lo\, good gentles\, in this year of grace\, the realm of France is sorely beset. The banners of the King of England do fly upon our soil\, and the chivalry of France doth answer with shield and lance. In the shadow of Rouen’s walls\, the forests are astir\, for all folk of courage and craft are summoned. Hark ye\, for the fields shall be filled with deeds worthy of the ancients\, and the tale of Rouen shall be writ by thine own hand. \nTwice before hath the road to Rouen been contested\, and twice hath the fleur-de-lis prevailed. Yet now\, the lion-hearted English return\, seeking to wrest the road from France’s grasp. Who shall hold it now? Will the lilies bloom thrice\, or shall St. George’s cross at last ride triumphant? \nWhat is Road to Rouen? It is a grand 14th-century immersive event within the SCA. Here\, each participant pledges their allegiance—either to the French cause or the English crown. You’ll find yourself not merely watching but living history. Lords will receive sealed messages run by swift couriers. In the woods\, you’ll walk through living war camps—fires crackling as cooks prepare meals\, knights arming with the help of squires\, and artisans crafting with period tools. Throughout the day\, you’ll engage in deeds of valor in the woods\, learn from 14th-century classes\, and even test your skill in an archery tournament. It is a world where cooks\, châtelaines\, and men-at-arms breathe life into the past. At Road to Rouen\, you are not just a spectator; you are a living thread in the medieval tapestry.” \nRoad to Rouen is a fully immersive 14th-century SCA event\, held at Camp Timbercrest\, 1169 Moore Rd\, Randolph\, NY. The event runs September 11th–13th\, with the Deed of Arms in the woods starting at noon on Saturday and concluding around 5 PM.Bellinger Lodge can sleep 36 in a slumber-party setup and offers a dining hall and a commercial kitchen. Jackman Lodge sleeps 32\, and yurts and cabin tent units add more sleeping capacity. The site features an archery range and ample space for medieval camps. \nSam Awry is the English captain\, and Duke Maynard is tentatively the French captain. More details\, including class and event registration\, will follow soon! \n———————————————————— \nPlease join us for The Road to Rouen\, a late 14th-century focused camping event inspired by the Hundred Years’ War. Hosted by the Shire of Heronter\, this immersive event emphasizes period encampments\, martial activities\, archery\, Arts & Sciences\, and life on campaign in the late 1300s. Previous iterations of this event have drawn over 200 attendees\, and we look forward to welcoming returning and new participants alike. \nActivities will include Heavy Fighting\, Archery\, Arts & Sciences classes\, and period social activities. Additional classes and activities may be scheduled throughout the weekend. \nTroll will be open on Friday\, September 11\, from 2:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.\, and on Saturday\, September 12\, from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.The site will close at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday\, September 13\, and all participants must be off site by that time. \nThe event will be held at Camp Timbercrest\, 1169 Moore Rd\, Randolph\, NY. The site offers primitive and semi-primitive camping\, indoor restroom and shower facilities\, open fields suitable for martial activities\, and an established archery range. Camp Timbercrest has ample capacity and infrastructure to comfortably support the expected attendance. \nYour Event Steward (Autocrat) is Enzo de Pazzi (John Meyer). SUMMARY:FREE Film Screening - Bees\, Bodies & Transformation - Jamestown Dance Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:Two groundbreaking dance films. Two radically different visual worlds. \nJoin us for a special Jamestown Dance Festival screening of: \nBEEHIVE1985 | 15 minutes\, 35 seconds | Color \nCreated by Frank Moore and Jim Self\, this award-winning 16mm film combines dance\, animation\, surreal design\, and absurd comedy. A bumbling drone accidentally transforms a worker bee into a Queen inside a wildly colorful hive inspired by television\, science fiction\, ballet\, and 1980s East Village experimentation. Beehive earned Bessie Awards for Moore\, Self\, and performer Teri Weksler. \nSHARIRA: Chandralekha’s Explorations in Dance2003 | 30 minutes | Directed by Ein Lall \nDrawing from Chandralekha’s works Shree\, Raga\, and Sharira\, the film examines her radical exploration of the body as a field where sensuality\, sexuality\, spirituality\, breath\, and feminine energy coexist. Through stark minimalism and striking physical imagery\, Chandralekha challenges the separation of body from mind and feeling from thought. \nFollowing the films\, Jim Self and Sukanya Burman will join audiences for an artist conversation about dance on camera\, interdisciplinary collaboration\, the body as a site of transformation\, and the very different artistic worlds behind these works. \nWhat to ExpectDancing bees and gloriously strange 1980s visual experimentationSculptural bodies\, geometry\, breath\, and meditative movementTwo distinct chapters of American and Indian contemporary dance historyA thoughtful and lively post-screening conversationAbsolutely no prior dance knowledge required \n Sunday\, September 13 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Sukanya Burman Dance106 E. 2nd Street\, Studio 3A\, Jamestown\, NY \nPresented as part of the 2026 Jamestown Dance Festival.

SUMMARY:Troy Lingelbach with International Lover - Jamestown Dance Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:September 10 (7pm) & September 13 (2pm) – Troy Lingelbach: International Lover \nLocation: Scharmann Theater\, JCC \nPrepare to look up. \nAerial artist and interdisciplinary performer Troy Lingelbach brings International Lover\, their debut solo work\, to Scharmann Theater for two performances as part of the Jamestown Dance Festival. \nBlending aerial arts\, dance\, performance art\, burlesque\, and physical theater\, International Lover is an autobiographical journey between an artist and their trapeze. Through breathtaking movement and radical vulnerability\, Lingelbach explores identity\, queer self-acceptance\, intimacy\, and transformation while quite literally redefining what dance can look like in space. \nPerformed in the intimate setting of Scharmann Theater\, audiences will experience an awe-inspiring work that expands movement beyond the stage and into the air itself. \nThis performance is part of the Jamestown Dance Festival\, a five-day celebration of dance\, movement\, and cultural exchange taking place throughout Jamestown from September 9–13\, 2026. Additional festival events include festival anchors Music From the Sole and Sun Kim Dance Theater at the Reg Lenna on Sept 11\, contemporary and postmodern works by TwinHead Dance\, Rik Daniels\, and Jim Self\, workshops led by featured artists\, film screenings\, artist talks\, and community engagement events. \nFounded by Sukanya Burman Dance\, the Jamestown Dance Festival was created from a simple belief: that communities of all sizes deserve access to world-class artistic experiences. The festival brings nationally and internationally recognized artists to Western New York while creating opportunities for meaningful dialogue\, cultural exchange\, education\, and community connection through movement. By presenting diverse dance forms and interdisciplinary performance practices alongside local engagement opportunities\, JDF seeks to expand perceptions of what dance can be\, who it is for\, and how it can foster empathy\, understanding\, and belonging. \nThis presentation is made possible through the generous support of the New York State Council on the Arts\, NYS DanceForce\, Arts Services Inc.\, the Chautauqua Regional Community Foundation\, Chautauqua County’s Occupancy Tax Program\, Live CHQ\, and partnerships with the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts\, Jamestown Community College\, and the Robert H Jackson Center.

SUMMARY:September Homeschoolers @ The Lakewood Library
DESCRIPTION:Homeschool at the Library is back! Homeschoolers ages 6–12 are welcome to meet Mondays at 1 PM on September 14\, 21\, and 28 for Artist Month. Each week\, we’ll learn about a famous artist\, explore what makes their work unique\, and then get creative with a hands-on art project inspired by their style. It’s a fun way to learn\, create\, and connect with other homeschoolers at the library.
