Candice Grimes: Artist in Residence

Artist Bio & Project Statement | Candice Grimes (Aug 24th – Aug 29th)
Candice has a vast skill set which centers around thoughtful production design to
create conceptual portraiture. Her work is heavily influenced by sci-fi and horror
themes which explore identity, mysticism, passage of time, and personal
transformation.

She has earned a B.F.A. in Advertising Photography from Rochester Institute of
Technology as well as an A.A.S in Visual Communications from Monroe Community
College. She currently works freelance as a photographer, producer, and art director in
Rochester, NY.

Through my on-going personal project, “Tarocchi,” I have explored connecting to Spirit
and the Divine through my work. Tarot is the art of interpreting ancient symbolism and
archetypes to understand more about one’s self and their relation to the universe. With
this project, I have used tarot imagery as a framework to express personal growth. I
use the technique of light painting with a long exposure, where I am the light, and
physically paint in areas to reveal their secrets from behind the shadows. This gives the
images an ethereal aesthetic which lends to the other-worldly subject matter.
