Broil Processing Field Day @ The Heron Farm & Event Center

September 17 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Free

FREE EVENT! Pre-registration required.

With support from the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County, Julie and Steve will be offering a tour of our small batch pasture-raised broiler enterprise, including production and a live demonstration of processing for those who want to learn how to humanely and safely process chickens on a small scale. Julie and Steve grow broilers organically and process them on-farm under the 1,000 bird exemption as part of Green Heron Growers, our organic farm.

Poultry is a low-cost farm enterprise with a short turn-around that holds potential to be a profitable business venture. Farmers are permitted to process up to 1,000 chickens on-farm for resale, though the equipment needs and the process itself may seem daunting. Learning which materials are needed and how to go through processing on a small scale are vital to understanding if this enterprise matches a farm’s capacity and goals.

All who are interested in raising or are currently raising poultry for meat are welcome to register for this free event. Pre-registrations are required, as there is an attendee limit to ensure everyone can have a clear view of the demonstrations.

The program will be from 2pm – 4pm on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at Green Heron Growers at 2361 Wait Corners Road, Panama, NY. All who are interested in raising or are currently raising poultry for meat are welcome to register for this free event. Pre-registrations are required, as there is an attendee limit to ensure everyone can have a clear view of the demonstrations.

You can register by contacting Amy at 716-640-0844 / amb544@cornell.edu or Lisa at (716) 664-9502 ext 203 / ljk4@cornell.edu.

Please bring your questions. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

These programs are provided free of charge thanks to work supported by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, U.S. Department of Agriculture, through the Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program under subaward number LNE22-435.
