Join us for a special public presentation on Thursday, August 22nd at 7 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Jamestown to learn more about the bird life at our Sunnyside Marsh Preserve.
For nine years, federally- and state-licensed master bird banders John H. Rappole, emeritus research scientist at the Smithsonian Institution’s Conservation Biology Institute, and Jim Berry, retired President of the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History, have captured, banded, and studied thousands of birds of 90 different species at the Sunnyside Marsh preserve. They recently published their findings in the paper “Seasonal Change in the Avian Community of a Western New York Shrub Swamp.” These findings will be presented at the August 22nd program along with background information on various plant and animal species also found in the marsh.
Our Sunnyside Marsh is a 4.5-acre nature preserve located in the Town of Ellery and is a vital link in the network of wetland preserves protecting Chautauqua Lake from runoff and sedimentation, providing critical plant and wildlife protection.
