Author Visit with Paul Leone – The Marlow Murder

October 8 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

The Marlow Murder

The latest publication from Chautauqua Region Press, The Marlow Murder reproduces the Jamestown Journal’s detailed coverage of the arrest, trial, conviction and execution in 1872 of the Jamestown Brewery proprietor Charles Marlow. Marlow murdered German immigrant William Bachman on the brewery’s premises in August 1871. The grisly murder included the burning of Bachman’s body in the brewery’s furnace. Celebrated Jamestown attorney Porter Sheldon defended Marlow through court proceedings. The testimony of the lengthy schedule of witnesses illuminates the demographics of the Chautauqua County community at the time. Local history enthusiasts will appreciate the description of the county’s physical Victorian attributes. Author Paul Leone has included additional historical information beyond the scope of the Journal’s reporting.
