6 Week Series – Building Blocks of Dance (3-5 Years Old)

Building Blocks of Dance is the next step for young movers ready to deepen their understanding of how their bodies move, while continuing to nurture creativity and self-expression.
Rooted in principles from modern/contemporary dance technique, this program introduces children to the fundamentals of movement by exploring how the body works in different positions, pathways, and dynamics. Students will begin to develop awareness of:
-How to move the body in upright and grounded positions (standing, floor work, transitioning in and out of the floor)
-Alignment and posture, helping them understand safe and efficient movement
-Weight shifts and balance, learning how to transfer weight from one foot to another or into the floor
-Levels and directions, moving high, medium, and low, and navigating space with intention
-Articulation of different body parts, how arms, legs, torso, and head can move independently and together
– Transitions, or how we move smoothly from one shape or position to another
-Drawing from contemporary practices, students will explore fluidity, suspension, release, and control.
Building Blocks of Dance serves as a bridge between creative movement and more formal dance training, helping students understand not just what to move, but how and why the body moves, laying a strong foundation for their continued dance journey.
